Took the rave caps to have peek. It looks like some micro had a very peaceful time for 5+ years.

Question here: is the exhaust pipe in the way of MAG rave coming out?

Sort of, just back out the housing bolts and unscrew the piston from the valve shaft and the remove it then the valve will come out of there. You don't have to do anything to the exhaust, reverse procedure to install.

I see. Different than the 951, which is whole piece in and out.

I noticed some black smoke residue around both RAVE's. It looks like to me one of the rave clean up's was not done right by the PO. He may have run out of gaskets at that time LOL.

I was bad enough once: I didn't put loctite after the rave clean up. Both rave's popped open at 6500RPM. Luckily God told me to bring the right size Allen key with me and no damage and all 4 bolts are still with the raves and then continued doing "faster". That was the closest to be towed.
I was too embarrassed to post it in the forum :-(

Yea, you'll want to tighten these down properly seeing as that assembly is right underneath some things you don't want punching a hole up through the seat lol!

I don't think that's really possible but why take a chance?

Trying to fog the engine. I spayed Seadoo storage oil on the metal filter. Is it the right way to do it? Or I need hose on the engine and run and spray for longer time?

Ok. Since I will have a busy week. I fogged the engine for now. I put a lot of oil in the spark plug holes, then run it to make sure a lot of white smoke coming out, then open the spark plugs again and sprayed more oil in and cranked the engine by hand about 5 turns.

Good morning dooes.

Got 10 minutes in the morning. Opened the pump oil plug. Smells like original oil. No milk shake. Totally black, but no burning smell at all. Is the original pump oil black?
Attaching some pictures here.

I am happy unless you tell me differently :-)

Nice! Stay happy, that's what you want to see when the plug comes out.

I guess I still do the oil change? Use syringe to suck the black oil out.

Peeked at the impeller blade too. The front edges are still sharp. For sure it doesn't know how sand stones taste like :-D

That's great news, It looked almost perfect when I crawled under it with the flashlight in the pump before I picked it up.

Edit: I am getting a combined shipping from the buyer now.
Edit: $23 to Canada, saved a 2 hour trip to the border.

Ok. 80ml black out. 80ml clear 75w140 back in. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1412208163.912567.jpg

Just curious, what was the colour of original Seadoo pump oil? Am I expecting the clear 75w140 to change colour?

Opened the VTS cover. Found some rust there.

No water in the housing. I guess I should take the 4 nuts off and take the motor assembly out to take a closer look.

Opened the Rave, screws were not very tight.
They need a good cleaning. Both sides are similar.

Did my "usual" piston inspection. A little surprised by what I saw:
MAG piston looks ok. PTO side has a lot of lines, not like the lines i found on the 951 in my boat.
The rings are not seized, I used a screw driver to push them, they moved a little.
You can see in the picture, looks like the white stuff is white paint??!!
MAG side :

More work for winter :-D

I've been buying 3M griddle cleaning pads to clean Rave's, soak them with WD-40 and those pads strip that mess right off there I wish I would have remembered to give you one when you were here.

Did more checking before going to work: I can feel the grooves by a stick, not deep and color cannot be rubbed off. Also pushed the piston sideways through the spark plug holes, cannot feel any play, so shouldn't be too much wear except the grooves.
Were these Pistons painted white? It does look like paint or thick coating to me. The black coating on the new piston for my 951/947 engine went away in less than 2 hours, which was very thin.
Do I need to open the top to take a look at the cylinders and inspect bottom end?
The compression is 155/155PSI. Same meter showing 125psi on my 951 engine. So the measurement should be correct.
I didn't run hard on Saturday with boys only top speed for a couple of minutes. And that was good 2 minutes, got on the plane right away and very strong pull. But didn't have time to do some long time hard test.

All it takes is a few minutes running lean with those grey lines and gunked up carbs or a broken or clogged brittle oil line to do damage. I'm hoping that's not the case here.....

I know it's hard to resist wanting to ride it right away but it always pays off to do the maintenance on any used ski purchased, especially one that's been hibernating for years

I tend not to believe Saturday ride did the damage. LoL
The bright side is the family all had a great and best boating weekend. :-)
It is what it is.
Is it worth while to open the head to see if it need a top end rebuild?
But I am still puzzling: what is that white paint still on the piston? Shouldn't it be worn off pretty quickly after a few hours of running?

Pistons do not have any white paint on them. Im not sure what you are seeing

I see white color on the surface, and those horizontal find lines are still there at some places.
I don't know if it is paint or just kind of Teflon coating.

That motor is probably the second strongest untouched all original 787 left anywhere, you saw number one in a boat bilge when you visited :) There might be more out there, but I haven't seen any.

Don't lose any sleep that exhaust scoring is so light there's no loss in performance yet, you'll get plenty of hard use out of that engine before it's time to break the glaze on the cylinders with a hone and wake it back up with a set of standard size pistons and rings and you'll be doing that right at home, no machine shop needed.
