What is a shallow water start? Like how many feet deep is considered shallow water?

ummm, under a foot maybe... don't worry about it.

honestly, you can suck up a rock smaller than a baseball with my grate on or off, it makes no difference. the holes are pretty big on most grates,, no worries. the grate actually (IMO) does very little to keep something from getting sucked into the pump, its there for ride/handling reasons, no more.

this is what mine looks like approximately, I can still suck anything smaller than a baseball right in there easy. Its not like its a screen.

Yeah grates don't provide much protection at all. I always just start my ski in >3ft of water and avoid debris that's floating. I've never messed up a prop/pump from sucking up stuff. I've seen quite a few people who ride up on the beach with the engine running and destroy stuff though..

So has anyone ran a Solas grate? It looks pretty similar to the r&d. I may just run the solas and sell the r&d since they are pretty easy to come by.

just picked her up the other night, 1999 seadoo spx, lets just say i had a rough night getting it home... no trailer lights... getting lost... etc, and before that i had a terrible day, pulled out my back, fell down my stairs, got a 5" round black and blue on my leg, stubbing my toe hard enough to make it bleed and crack my nail, and then when i was about to leave, i couldnt get the bike i was trading him on the back of my car, it had a hitch trailer, it was too long, it was a motocross bike, ended up taking my grandfathers 88' f-250, top speed of 55 because of the vibrations, 3 seater, and i had 2 other people, couldnt get the pressure washer to start to clean the bike i was trading the guy, left the bike stand home, couldnt find my funnel while changing the oil, closed my hand in the car door, i dont think i got the best deal, with the value of the bike plus the money around 2400-2500, then i forgot my compression gauge, after driving 2 hours there, in a 88 f250 spray painted, then the guy told me the gas gauge didnt work, i pretty much just said f*** it, and dove for it, but the thing is clean, while not knowing the compression of the engine, i dont know how the internals are, but i mean this thing is MINT, excellent condition, the thing pretty much looks new, ill take some more pictures when i get up to the lake, this is my only available picture, hope you found this story interesting and if u dont im sorry, but heres the picture!

Sorry about the rough day but you do have a fine machine to show for it. I love the black hull and the hump seat.

I would change all of the gray one to Black auto fuel lines and add an in-line fuel filter too.
Just do one at a time and mark them with tape when you do the fuel selector valve (clean it or replace it).
some people don't change the vent lines but I did just so all the lines match, and to be sure no goo travels to the fuel lines and then to the carb filters (clean these too)

All of them, use 1/4" auto fuel line. You"ll need about 25 ft. By the way,I'm new here and have a 95xp with a 717 in it.Only had it for a month and am working to get it in peek shape.Done most of the mechanical stuff and will be working on the cosmetics over the winter.Has anyone tried using power window relays to repair their VTS,it only takes 2 x $10 relays and replacing the fuse with a breaker. There are alot of real nice looking skis here and I hope to get mine as nice.

Yeah that 99 looks well taken care of...just go thru and do all the fuel lines, rebuild the carbs, clean the raves....etc and you'll have a have a machine that will likely run a long time.

aside from the tempo lines, that honestly has to be one of the cleanest ski's i've seen in a LONG time... very nice purchase (I think, not sure what you have invested in this)

you just want braided 1/4 fuel line (not injection line) buy a 25 foot roll, change everything except the vent lines, if you have line left over , including all the carb lines, then do the vent lines for cosmetic reasons. if its still oil injected those lines probably should be replaced as well to be safe or at least closely inspected, otherwise very nice ski and the advice above is spot on. and i know you don't want to hear this but IMO... it goes like this.
compression test
replace lines, filters, carb clean (ONLY if your comfortable)
ride it

Yes, you can't ride it unitl you get the first two things done.. its a RULE !!!.

so let me get this right, do a compression test, then if that checks out, change all of the clear/grey lines out with black automotive lines, install some fram g2 inline filters, then clean the raves then i am set? and quick question, if i change those grey lines out with black automotive ones, will they also corrode like the clear ones did and turn grey inside or what? and also where do you install the fram g2 filters? anywhere?

if the carbs were done in the spring, your probably safe, however if carb's are not a big deal for you (you've gone thru them before, then go ahead, if not, consider skipping)
personally i don't run an inline fuel filter, maybe i should, just never got around to it i guess
no, the black ones won't corrode. standard 1/4 black braided fuel line, i use gates, but most are very comparable,
also, start a new thread on the ski, and we'll walk u thru the misc stuff, but either A) the owner did a hell of a job cleaning up a dirty ski, or b) the owner kept it up very nice, i'm a tad suprised the grey lines are still there, but i probably shouldn't be

One filter on the suction side of the carbs,Auto lines should be OK,they are rated for use with Ethanol.

on that subject of fuel filters, i did order some g12's but they were 5/16 so i gave two out of the 3 i ordered to a buddy that has a 951, then never got around to finding a 1/4 fitting, maybe i can just force the 5/16 on there, i never tried i'll admit.

so what # filter are you ordering, for 1/4 fuel line make/model plez

most people on here just force the 5/16 in there because they are usually the only ones they find and it makes increased flow, pretty soon im about to order 6 of them off ebay for 20 bucks, the fram g2 filters

Yup, force it. You don't need to replace the grey lines that are used for venting the tank, just the ones that carry fuel.

ok, i set one aside, i'll just jam it in there with some slippery stuff on the nipples and see if it will work.
why the hell is a 1/4 fuel filter so hard to find ?
