The X4 Thread

I've got a hump seat, but it needs to be reupholstered, has a giant hole where the hump is. Is there a special way to reupholster the hump part? It seems that the vinyl is somehow stuck to a tongue of some sort that seems to go into the foam...

Did you get the seat figured out how to do it?

I have the same thing, have a new cover just not sure the best way to do it.

OK, my thirst for the answer has overcome my desire not to be an idiot. The x4 hull is described as having a "lean out" riding style. While I feel this should be self evident to me..it isn't. Maybe pictures?

Not yet, only about to break in the motor today, and fix up the trailer. Got lots of bs work before I can worry about cosmetics. Will use the old flat seat for a while longer :(

My Solas intake grate came in today, just got done bolting that baby one. MLine seat cover should be here tomorrow and the rest of the parts I ordered some time next week. Im excited! Just need to find an XO prop now and ill be all set

Igeeky1, the "lean out" riding style is used to describe what you have to do to get a X4 to turn quickly at speed with stock sponsons. If you had to turn right you would lean back and to the left to keep the hull level to get the turn to stick. Otherwise it may slide out on you. Trimming down will help you turn a little better as well.

Thanks for the reply Matt, so it is pretty much opposite of how you'd take a turn on a bike...this could take some getting used to.

got a 96 xp this week with a 787 motor but the hull was crashed. had been sitting for 4 years when i got it. paid $800.00 for ski and trailer. took it home an pulled plugs and flame arrestor and threw in a battery. poured some fresh gas/oil mix in plug holes and carbs and she fires right up. going tomorrow to buy a 97 xp hull for $50.00 thats in near mint condition with no motor but everything else is in tact. needs a seat cover which i already bought off ebay for $35.00. gonna have a sweet looking and running x4 on the lake this weekend. but will have to do all the recomended changes like the grey hoses etc... will post pics soon.....everyone please have a safe weekend. ride hard, ride safe....
hey mods or anyone else.... where can i get a seadoo forum.com sticker ?

Let me know if you need parts...the big thing I'm guessing thats missing is the 97PTO...one year one model and even worse...all the 787 HXs have used up most of the supply. Thats about the only difference engine wise. They use the accel pump carbs, but you can use the 96xps.

Make sure the MPEM and wiring is in there...its gonna get expensive...or interesting when you go to put the 96 box in. Not impossible, but it will take time to match up all the wiring and add connectors.

Its not really rocket science...but if you want it to turn at fast speed you throw your body weight out.

I also want to apologize to the group....I wish I had more time to answer questions but its been a CRAZY spring so far! I do appreciate all the business and if you have something that you need to ask me dont hesitate to PM me. Thanks everyone!

exactly ! stand/pull/lean into a deep crouch to dig into a turn, and over time you'll learn how hard you need or have to dig into the turn to control the slide vs dig.

Slap a set of Beach House Sponson's on and then its a whole new animal!

yip, if you have them digging in for you, the ride changes quite a bit you can stay more centered and seated (but hold on) during a turn because you don't have to force the sponson's down into the water, they're already there. significantly stronger response at any speed over idle

Might loose just a little top end with the additional drag. Also you may get thrown a couple times until you learn to respect them. You can easily cause leaks messing around with the through hull application process. Despite all that, I love them. I never met a set of aftermarket sponsons that I didn't like.

I rather like the feeling of the ass-end letting go a little as I'm powering through a turn :)

On a sad note: has anyone ever had an top end blow a ring and/or break a piston crown upon break in? I was running premix and injection with open carbs b/c the carbs were running super rich. The plugs were black when it blew up...

thrown a 'couple of times' ? bah... thrown like 20 times was my experience lol

but honestly the biggest downside that I had was when running at say 40mph fairly straight, it took very little wiggle in the handlebars for it to make a pretty strong turn, I had many close calls at 40-50 when I forgot I had the sponson's on and started to do an easy turn and the ski did a hard turn and nearly tossed me, the water hurts at 40+....

in reality it just takes some getting used to.

I think that just scared me into putting a few more hours of experience behind me prior to playing with sponson attachments :)
Thank all very interesting to me!

yes, baby steps, get out and ride it, get used to it before you get carried away with mod's... that's my .02. sponson's are an excellent mod but i'd avoid them if newb's, beginners, or young riders will be on it.

my general rule of thumb is put 20+ hours on it to get used to the ride before you start making changes, you may find that you don't want any. However, the last mod I did was water injection, after I had maybe put 60 hours on it, and I had to be talked into it, and 5 minutes after I hit the water, the first thing I said was OMG.. why did I wait so long !!!

oh, and by the way, there are no stupid questions.. only stupid people asking questions :)

but seriously,,, that's the whole point of the internet, 99% of the people you'll meet here you'll never ever meet in person, so please, fire away with questions... trust me, i've asked some real doozies, and i'm far from done !!!

ok correction to my earlier post. it is not a 97xp that i just bought it is a 96xp. i ended up looking at the wrong picture that another guy sent me by mistake then went and drove almost 2 hours and pulled up to the guys house looking for a 97 and all there was was a 96... dummy me already went and bought a seat cover for a 97 xp on ebay... on the bright side i paid $50.00 for a EXTREMELY clean hull. gel coat still shines and all decals are complete with the exception of one scrape in the lower side. seat is in good conditionand typical fade on hood and black on bars but not too bad at all. gel coat on bottom is in excelent condition. dont look like it was beached alot. all in all a good score for $50.00. pictures to come soon

this is very true. after going to my worx sponsons, steering becomes really touchy. I've actually learned the i can turn just my leaning and shifting my weight. i really didn't lose any top speed with mine.

ok reading all this im assuming the xp is a whole different animal compared to my old sponsenless 1989 sp i used to own and ride. guess im in for a whole new world of fun and pain with my 96 xp. got the engine and electronics swapped into the new hull today and fired it right up. purrs like a raped ape. jet pump and vts installed tomorrow morning and it out on the lake i go. well of course after i change the old fuel and oil out for new stuff.

1996 xp

Hey Guys, Hope everyones having a good weekend. I pulled the impeller housing off of one of my skis today and I had a few questions.

The top of the housing was gobbed with black silcone (See Picture), Its not like that from the factory is it? When I pulled the housing out the neoprene seal was pretty much disintegrated so I will need one of those. Do any of you guys make your own or find one at a local parts store?

I dont have the impeller tool yet so I have to wait on that to pull it apart and inspect the guts, But I am wondering about the two silver washer looking things on the right (Second picture, Right hand studs). Their thin, They are not washers. Are these the shims I hear guys talking about sometimes?

I also had one last question about the 787. Spark plug torque? How tight are the plugs suppose to be? The old ones came out extremely easy, like they were not tight easy. I put the new ones in and start tightening them and it feels real funny, Like the plug would start to get tight then get loose again and then tight again etc...

I did not put any strength into tightening these, You know sometimes when your tightening something and it just feels unnatural? Me putting both of those plugs in was like that so I did not turn them anymore. Are the plugs suppose bottom out and stop turning like on a car or is there a specific torque spec?

that is not factory silicone for sure, someone else has done work to it before. the silver things are in fact shims for engine/shaft alignment. as far as spark plugs go... cant help on that one.
