Those are some UGLY skis lol!! I think Minnetonka4me's skis posted earlier in this thread look sooooo much better

Does it make sense to get an aftermarket rideplate or intake grate for my '96 XP?

Also, who makes a steering stem for the '96 XP? I've seen them and it looks like a different plate, bearings, etc. Much smoother and solid.

I.E Beside bars and 4 screws/nuts for the plate is there anything else needed? And is it worth it?

I think for the price i'll stick with the stock stem and just toss some bike bars on it.

I believe that is all you need. I would also get the UMI VTS switch holder, finger throttle, and the wiring connectors depin tool ($10 on ebay). I just installed mine last month and it was pretty easy. I havent had a chance to ride the ski yet this season but from just sitting on the ski, I really like the angle of the handle bars with the UMI setup. Im 6' 3" so the more forward position of the bars fits me better.

agree, plate no

grate, i ride a lot of flat water, took my grate out after running over my hat, never got around to putting it back on, really didn't notice a significant difference, its been so long know I forget how it used to be

This is what I want right? So there really are no negatives then installing this grate. Is it a simple bolt on part or is more work involved?

https://www.wamiltons.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=195

yes just a simple bolt on. takes some silcone and about 10 mins to do.

thats the wrong model number tho. heres the one you need: wr207

http://www.atlanticjetsport.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1913

and you'll maybe loose 1/2 mph top end on glass water.

Honda is working on some stickers for my XP. It will be more of a race look. I'll be sure to post pics when I get them put on.

Quick question for anyone who has a UMI setup on their ski, How do you get the steering cable to stay in the holder/clamp!!? The umi bracket is metal and I reused the stock black plastic top clamp. By the end of the day I had tightened down the two screws until they nearly crushed the black plastic top clamp and the steering cable still kept slipping out of the clamp. Today was my first trip to the lake this season and the UMI bars nearly drove me crazy! Ski ran great but having the cable constantly slip out and losing steering sucked! I missed some of the biggest waves of the day because of the damn thing.

the umi should have came with its own clamp for the steering cable.

Is it a metal clamp just like the bracket? I bought my setup used but I saw a few others for sell with the black plastic top clamp so I thought that was standard. Wonder where I can find the UMI clamp at?

edit - If you look at post #1055 theres an ebay link to a umi setup. On the second picture you can see he is selling his with the black plastic clamp also. The black plastic cylinder thing that goes around the steering cable is what keeps slipping out on a hard right turn(i believe, which ever direction pulls on the cable instead of pushes).

I finally found another X4 for myself. I sold my two a few years ago and have been riding a GTX since but have missed the X4s so much. Anyway, yesterday I picked up an inop 99 SPX for dirt cheap. One dead battery replacement later and she is running like a top. When I say this thing is clean, it could pass for new. Spent its entire life on Conventry Lake in Coventry CT. Never been beached, not even a single scuff on the bottom of the hull. Ive got a folder full of receipts from new to last year for every single thing that has ever been done to this thing. In 07 the entire motor was torn down and rebuilt. Jet pump rebuild two years ago, new impeller, new wear ring..... The list goes on and on. Ill thorw some pic up tomorrow but needless to say, I think the GTX is going to see a bit less water time this season.

Did you find it on CL by chance?

I did. Was listed for about two weeks and the previous owner kept blowing me off when we'd make plans for me to come see it. Finally he said it would no longer start so I threw a low ball offer out cause I couldn't check compression and brought it home.

Heres a pic from when I picked it up. Ive got an Mline seat cover and some hydro turf on order right now. Undecided if I want to do anything else or just leave as it. Its kind of too clean to mod

nice find ! turf & cover sound about right

only other exterior/non performance mod is single gauge hood, based on preference

other "mods" are only performance, and it depends on the individual, and you have many to choose from depending on your style.
prop/pump/nozzles
flame arrestors
water injection
hard jet waterbox
spec pipe
sponsons
grate (not a big fan of fancy grates but some swear by it)
carbs
after that it gets expensive :)

my opinion, ride it first, then decide if you want to have more More MORE power ! or maybe you like it just the way it is.

I rode big 3 seater hulls before I switched to a 96xp. and I had the xp pretty much stock for 4 months except for spec pipe & arrestors, and my first thought, was "wow, it can't get any better than this" then I gradually started making improvements, first with water injection, and I said "omg, it can't get any better than this" then nozzles/pump/prop, and again I said "holy crap, it can't get any better than this !"
I'm very happy with the ride I have now.

That was a nice buy man! I've looked at the Mline covers and they look nice. Especially for the money! I've been wanting a hump seat bad, but I can bring myself to shell out the cash.

See my dilemma is this isn't my first X4, I've had a few. It's been a couple years since I last rode one. They are a blast stock but I think I might want more. Then again on the flip side, it's kind of a hard ski to find so maybe it's something thats better left stock

Nice have the same ski.

Post pics after the new seat and turf. Let us know how the seat cover install went with the hump seat. I have a new cover as well just haven't put it on yet.

Good buy!

Guys, my X4 needs some help... I have a mid-90's 787 motor that I had to rip apart and rebuild after a wrist pin bearing needle fell into the works and jammed the RV gear. Upon reassembly, I used blue RTV to seal the case halves together. The first time, I found that my counterbalance oil leaked into the PTO crank chamber. The bottom of the crankshafts counter weight was wet with the stuff. I used the synthetic 2-stroke amzoil that I use in the XP's. I went on the seadoo forums and they said I needed to split the case again and use 3-bond 1194 sealant. Well, I did, and had the same thing happen. I even ordered a labyrinth washer for the crank, thinking that it could be a wear part, but it's just a big steel ring. I can't imagine that thing wearing out, so I didn't bother modifying my press to press apart the crank. So what is my problem?? How can the case leak like this? Should I have used this bonding compound on the bottom of the bearing races? What about those guide pins on the outside of the races? Should I have coated those?? Should I have waited to add the oil several hours after reassembly?
I'm really lost here, I feel like there's something I'm missing. Please help!! Thanks.
