The X4 Thread

In KY you're required to have a three seater to pull a skier, tuber. I think it's universal in the US. Besides I can't imagine riding two on a XP, to me it's a one person ski.

Agreed, the X4 is intended for a single person, but it's still fun to see how long people can hang on while I'm trying to throw them off :)

Here's one to all you X4 lovers: What is (in your opinion) the most crazy or otherwise bad-ass thing you've done on your X4?

For me it was getting MASSIVE air behind those marlin boats at the outer banks. While cruising, those babies throw like 6ft wake. I could've sworn I was 10ft out of the water, but that may an adrenaline induced illusion.

I think it's cool when you land a jump in such a way that you and the entire Seadoo are completely underwater.

great pics... how many guys are running bilge pumps on their x4's? pics of setups? I know it couldn't hurt having backup plan. ANyone install strainers on the intake hose or shutoffs for towing instead of having to clamp the intake hose?

Scott

i've seen a couple of bilge pumps, my ride buddy has his connected to a vts switch so he can turn it on easily, my ski is so dry i've never gotten around to it but one day I will.

i had a shutoff on my old yamaha for towing but never put one in my x4, Its a fairly easy install tho.

ok, why do you need a shutoff for towing? for the bailers?

not an X4, but my 97xp has a bilge pump that was installed by the PO wired to a switch between the gauges, but that was probably because the o-ring holding the floating ring against the carbon ring disintegrated and it leaked water quite rapidly when it was not running. the bailers work well enough to keep the hull dry as long as the engine was running.

I have towed many times w/o an issue...really depends on how fast you are going. In a pinch you can take a spark plug out, unhook the incoming line, and clamp the end of the plug in the line. done deal.

What is supposed to happen is you push water into the line when you are moving and could flood your pipe then your motor. I personally think the prop would have to be in the perfect spot to really force water into the line.

I do run a strainer and I would highly recommend one when running a aftermarket pipe that has restrictor jets. One of the masters I learned from says they arent worth the hassle...and I have had one fail on the water...but I still believe its a good thing to have.

As far as bilge pumps....its a dang good thing...esp when you have something fail or flip it. The main issue I have is they dont make a good sealed switch under $20...and even the sealed ones fail. I just use cheapos b/c I have a radioshack 2 mins away so a new switch is always available.

I've got a bilge on my x4, it's mounted behind the flywheel in front of one of the bailers. The PO put it in near the battery, but he only JB welded it and it came off. I thought that was a bad place for it, as the water likes to go to the back of the ski, so that's where I installed mine. I drilled a few stainless scres into the fiberglass (after making a very small pilot hole) and put jb weld around the hole when installing the screws. I screwed down the bottom portion of the bilge pump (the plastic strainer cage that clips on/off the actual pump). It seems to hold the pump on rather well even with my 10ft jumps and occasional rolls. I have a water-proof switch routed to the front (another driled hole). I used to have a regular switch, but when wet, it shorts out and the pump runs. You won't even know it's running until you cut off the ski and hear the noise. It came in handy when my exhaust pipe bolt came loose and I was taking on cooling water. I plan on retrofitting all my doo's with bilge pumps eventually, they're good to have and relatively inexpensive. The only thing I hate about mine is where the PO installed the outlet: right in the middle of the back of the hull, ugly and obvious as day. While not looking at the ski, I"m not sure where would be a better place for it, but there has to be one.

Here's some of me and my SPX on Lake Greenwood in SC.

Hey Minnetonka4me
so in these pictures I see you are wearing a helmet, what kind do you recommend, is there special ones for pwc?

i wondered if i could put the bilge outlet near the pump, might need a check valve or a loop in the bilge hose and wouldn't see it at all. The downside is you never really see the water dumping. I was thinking of using a 500gph pump that checks every 2min and put a switch on that so wheni take the ski out of water i can turn it off so it doesn't kill the battery, sure i have to remember to turn it on everytime i go out... any pics of the pumps you guys put in?

Scott

you won't see the water coming out, but you should be able to hear it as you typically run it with the engine off. I thought about putting the hole beside the pump with a loop, but my fears of it coming off and flooding my ski prevented me from it. I suppose I could use better hoses and do that though... and idk what gph mine is rated for, but you really don't need much, just something SMALL as the larger it is, the harder it is to find a place/secure it. (you don't have too much room to play with in there)

Hey guys, I have a problem with my 96 XP. Just put a new engine in and after I hooked up everything I finally got her started. She revved high so I shut her off and went back to check my cables and make sure the carb butterflies are closed. Synced those and made sure the oil injection is synced. Now it doesn't look like I'm getting any spark. What is the most likely cause of that? Ignition coil, stator, ? Thanks.

Kyle

I've thought about a bilge pump in my ski's, but i'm just going to buy one and strap it inside the hull somewhere under the storage compartment. I'll just solder some gator clips to the leads and if I have a issue I can just drop it in the back of the hull and hook the clips up. My buddies and I are kinda anal about our ski's so we check the bilge often.

On a side note I road my X4 for the first time today. Not my first time on one, but the first with a grate and sponsons. All I can say is damn! I said damn to when I saw the fuel it was using lol! I just looked up the GTI tank info and its cool, but I don't want to yank my motor and hack my storage bin. Might try to engineer a saddle tank of some sort for a couple of extra gallons or take the easy approach and stick a 5 gallon jug in the truck

Hey Minnetonka4me
so in these pictures I see you are wearing a helmet, what kind do you recommend, is there special ones for pwc?

They used to make the older ones with foam so they didnt get all water logged...my helmet is actually a OEM part from the 90s.

I dont think they make them like that...they just make the innards removable so you can dry and wash them.

Check optimaracing.com they got a nice selection.

you're saying that with a grate, it uses more fuel? heh... I guess I'm still going to use mine though: the XP is like a Ferrari, you don't get them for their superb fuel efficiency. (that's what the 580GTS is for :D)

Nah just the 787 and a 9 gallon tank in general :D

You guys ever think about a thread for x4 pics only or x4 pic of the day post? Can include motors, jetpumps, grates, ski's tricks etc etc. Technical and discussion stay in this x4 cult forum. I know on some car forums they have a pic of the day post... Maybe branching it out to all 2 stroke ski's pics only no big discussions as i really enjoy just pics sometimes... or then again maybe its late and im overthinking this.... thoughts?

Scott

i had the thought. should be X-4 of the month, with a max of 10 entries and you can vote. after one month the pic with the most votes wins

I like the idea of a picture thread. Only thing with a picture of the month thread it will take someone moderating it and controlling the vote.

Possibly dumb question, but here I go. I know you not supposed to "boost" your battery with it hooked up in the ski, but is it safe to charge and put on a battery tender with it hooked up?
