I just unhook mine when I have a passenger and when Im jumping and by myself I hook it up (all the way up) works well

Looking to see what others do. So when you pull your ski out of the water, how much do you rev it? I usually give it 2 good burps of the throttle and shut it down. Should I do a bit more or less. Just checking

Yep... that's about right. Just want to get the bulk of the water out of the muffler.

on the subject of the x4,
is there really any differenct between the xp and the spx except age ?
i've never actually seen a spx, so i was curious.
in theory, would the 98 spx be the most desirable of the 97-99 one due to slightly lighter weight ?

would you say a complete system is worth 275.00 shipped? i was thinking more along the lines of 215.00 max.

It's basically the same. In 97, the XP changed to the parabolic hull, and the '96 XP 800 was rebadged as the '97 SPx.

i assume parabolic = wishbone :) i don't have my thesaurus handy
and i had a 97 wishbone, didn't care for it, sluggish, also had the 02 XPL and although top speed was nice, i didn't care for the bottom end response, wasn't really much of a jumper, but it sure did carve nice, and had more storage :)

i was just curious on the spx since i'm kind of in the market for a 2nd xp since i'm so cheap I can't see myself spending the coin on a 4 stroke at this point, so maybe i'll look harder for the spx instead of a 96 xp.

now.. on another subject, we have a few group rides planned coming up and I need to extend my fuel range on my 96 xp so I can complete the full ride instead of turning around after 20ish miles...
these dam 4 strokes can run 80 miles with no worries, i'm good for 40-50 tops.
9 gallon tank at present, i know I can shorten the storage bin and put in the 12 gallon tank,
but past that, has anybody else devised something creative to put spare gallons on the back ?
some form of platform or strap system ?
right now my backup plan is to talk the 4 strokers with bigger platforms on the back to strap maybe 4 gallons for me...
anybody ?

They have to be good friends. :)

I was thinking putting a small 2.5 jug in bin as emergency and have 5 gal jug hidden on a island going out past riding point then U back to pick up gas for return.

The idea of the bigger tank is an idea but engine has to come out :(
The gas tank donor is from a GTI/GTX, right??

I'll assume Yes. I've never heard it called a wishbone before. The reason it's a parabolic hull is because it gets thinner in the center, and bulges back out. That design forces a corner when leaned over.

We can make it easy, and call it the "Spring Seat XP."

Personally... I like the looks of the 99 SPx the best out of all the X4's. It was yellow and gray. The 98 wasn't bad either... it was yellow and black.

Yup supposedly the 98 was about the same weight as a 95. The bigger differences are: No LCD, no Speedo, 98-99s had a accel pump on the carbs, MPEM had CDI built in vs. 2 different modules, upgraded flywheel, pickup, and CB shaft.

Of a hydro one? $275 is not too expensive. I have seen cable ones go for $200 these days.

There are a couple rack manufacturers, but I would think if you hung 10gal of gas off the back its gonna ride like crap. Dare I say it might be time for a GSX...lol If you need the 12gal let me know...I have 2 complete setups with the pickup and straps.

i'll let ya know, but in reality, i don't want to get 10 gallons, even 3 would do the trick and i burn through 3 pretty fast so I could top off after a short spell and then just be carrying empty tanks in the back, 10 would be crazy :) i was leaning more towards two 2 gallon tanks at the most. even 1 gallon would extend my range by 10% :)

i looked into the fuel cylinders that the motocross and tour bikes use, but the biggest I saw was 1.5L, so even 3 cyl's would only give me 1 extra gallon and change.

then of course they have those mountable rotopax cans that could go on the back, i've seen them on jeeps & stuff.

but these are pricey, i'd probably look for something used and see if I got lucky..

it was easy on my yamaha XL hull, the hull was so much bigger and more stable, i used to keep a 2 gallon can and when i wanted that extra range, i just ratchet strapped it on the back criss cross and i was good to go, but that ski had a huge tank to begin with, i think it was 14 gallons..so it was rarely needed.

i have a friend that can weld me anything, he made a nice cooler rack for my friends 4 tech, but with all that aluminum it just looked like it would be painful if I fell off the back and hit that first, and it would get in the way when re boarding...

right now, like i said, my backup plan is to have my buddy with the 4 stroke put a 5 gallon can on his cooler rack, maybe I can pack a 1 gallon can, and viola' an extra 6 gallons, which would dam near give me a 70 mile range if i didn't hit it hard on the way out, and juiced a little more on the way back.. (almost there !)

i just figured i can't be the only guy with an x4 hull that gets frustrated with the 40-45 mile range

The easy/cheap answer would be to get 2 of the 2.5gal blitz cans, and just put them under the hood. I'm sure you can figure out a way to strap one to each side of the hull, in the front compartment. (There is a lot of open room)

The realistic answer is... do you really want to do 80 miles on an XP????? They are fun to throw around, and get wet on... but you will be beat to death on it, using it for a "Destination" ride. This is exactly why I have my Big 4 person, Polaris Genesis. The seat is much wider, and MUCH softer. AND... it's so long, that it rides smooth even over the rough stuff. If I'm only holding it at 75% power (about 49~50 MPH) I can go +120 miles.

A 4-stroke may be out of your price range... but I would recommend a 3 or 4 seater for destination rides.

Just my 2 cents.

the '99 SPX is also on my 'wish' list.

as for 'burping' the throttle when out of water... I did that once... did a lean run out and ruined my engine. good times. (951).

if putting in a gti/gtx what exactly is needed i did a quick seach didn't see any documented threads or pictures. Does the motor really have to be removed? That would certainly change my mind esp on a saltwater ski, the less bolts i have to remove the better. how much is our reserve?

I'm not sure I understand the question. What are you putting in a gti/gtx??? Are you asking fuel tank size?

Just my 2 cents.

I couldn't agree more, my 96XP is the fun ski, but when ever I go for a long ride I take a cruiser, my 96GTI (the Buick).

btw anyone had a problem with the exhaust waterbox bracket being loose what did you guys do to secure it? stainless screws? Mine apparently rusted and snapped the heads off.
