The X4 Thread

Hey guru's. Been reading your X4 thread. I bought a couple older jet ski's at the end of last year. A 97 GTI and a 99 GTX. I'm no expert on these puppies, really a novice but getting to know them inside out very well. Been using them quite a bit this summer. The GTI is down right now, I replaced wear ring and tightened it up so much the drive shaft / pto-flywheel both stripped splines. Waiting on parts now. The GTI is nothing compared to the GTX, looking for another ski like the GTX. I'd like to get your thoughts on a ski i found on craigslist near me, I put a deposit down on it already so don't anyone get the idea you can get there first! Please let me know your thoughts, just feeling around in the dark, but I really love these ski's.

The add says good compression. If I were you would would take a tester and just check. It's very easy to do and the owner shouldn't mind it one bit since he is wanting to sell. Anyway, take off one plug and put it on the ground post, remove which ever plug for the cylinder you are going to check and turn the engine over with your compression tester firmly seated in the plug hole. Each cylinder should be pretty close to the other and no less than about 135 PSI each. I agree with PPE and tell you that if you are expecting the XP to ride somewhat close to the GTX or GTI that you have you will be very disappointed. Don't get me wrong the XP is a blast to ride just completely different than the bigger boats. Also it seems a bit pricey at least for Alabama it is but you are in better shape to determine what the market is in San Antonio. Hope this helps.

Something I noticed I was using regular gas from a BP Amoco station. I was driving for work the other day and saw a sign on one of the older gas stations that said no ethanol. So when we were low on gas we filled them up there and didn't add the sta-bil marine ethanol treatment. We went to the river yesterday evening, the thing I noticed the most was that normally I have to give it just a little throtttle to crank the engine. Without the ethanol it just cranked with no throttle.

Hey guys w stock 96xps. What do you got your low speed needles at and did you just leave highs alone? I've been tinkering w my carb settings trying to get 1 of my xps to run good. Seems like I understand everything in the ski but Carbs still just loose me lol.

Okay cool I think I have one of my xps at 1 n 1/2 hour on the lowes. But think highs are closed.

Dr why are they open dif on the highs.

Okay cool...I'm planning on learning a lot more over the winter about my skis. I kinda want to do some upgrades and all but it just don't seem worth 1000 dollars to go 2 mph faster. I think all I'm gunna do is new carbon seals new oem wear rings. And maybe impellor upgrades. That will probally be it besides cleaning them up really good.

May do a topp end on one of them I have 135,140 the other is 155,155.

Hey KyleB,

What lake do you ride on, we ride on Lay Lake. Will probably try out Smith soon.

You will love Smith! We have a small cabin up on Brushy Creek on Smith and it is quite and peaceful. Its a great place to ride and explore. There are several boat ramps around that area but if have never ridden Smith before you may want to put in at the Al. Power dock next to the dam. From there you will have access to marinas as well as some very nice coves and you will pretty much have your pick of which part of the lake to explore. One word of caution. If you do decide to ride up on brushy bring plenty of fuel in cans because there are ZERO marinas up that way. Hope this helps and maybe i'll see you out there some time. It would be cool having 2 X4's one the lake at the same time. Take care.

I will let you know when we go. Today at 11 we are headed to Lay Lake. I live about 5 miles from Beeswax boat launch. Al Power owns it and put in new dock and added a second launch. They also added restrooms, swings, basketball court, about 30 picnic tables 10-15 covered, swimming area, and 3 piers. Mostly used for bass tournament's. I don't understand why the fisherman seem to hate us, maybe they had a bad experience with PWC's. We just swing wide of them. The lake is dark and has alot of weeds especially after storms. I heard Smith it beautiful. After I feel confident about ski's (maybe two more trips) will try venturing off. But we have our usual crowd today. Wife, kid, me, Mom, Dad, Sister, her boyfriend, and Dad's 2 lb toy poodle (Newt).:grouphug:

BTW: Smith Lake has a surface area of 21,200 acres, 500 miles of shoreline, a watershed area of 944 square miles, a retention time of 435 days, and a maximum depth of 264 feet.

That sounds huge.:driving:

i believe it's because the PTO runs hotter

Exactly.

On the Multi cyl engines... the crank can twist slightly, and it causes the PTO jug to run with a little more timing. Most 2 cyl engines don't have this issue... but since seadoo has the gears in the center... it gives it the twisting issue. On a 3 cyl engine... the problem is even worse. On my 1200 Polaris... there is a huge spread from the MAG to the PTO main jets. (mag 135; pto 145)

OK... with that said... the '96 800 engine ran jetting that was the same in the MAG and PTO... but in '97... they spec the PTO high at 1/4 of a turn. (Everything else remained the same) The '96 spec was fine as long as you didn't run hot... and you had good fuel. BUT... it was right on the ragged edge. SO... if you got a load of bad fuel... you could stick the PTO piston. After doing my own jetting checks... I opened my PTO high needle just to help cool it. (I run mid grade fuel)

Interesting. Man I wish I understood Carbs more. I'm.always scared to do much adjustings cause I know its the heart if the motor. I'm scared to tear something up.

Hackete,Kyle ,
Good to know there are more x4's here in AL. I usually ride lake Jordan and occasionally lake Martin. If you guys hpavent been there, you need to make the trip. 740 miles of shoreline, this lake is huge

i installed an inline fuel filter right before the carbs. i just noticed the tank doesn't seem to be pressurized anymore. i'm assuming since i cut the line then installed the filter there was probably air introduced to the system? does that seem right?

Also, does anyone know if the pump on an rx di is a 155mm?

Under normal running... the fuel system doesn't pressurize. If you are building pressure... then the vent is plugged.

951 engine... yes. 155.5 mm

not running, but when it's off. isn't there supposed to be some pressure when you remove the gas cap?

There should if the check valves are working right and it gets heated up in the sun...

Check valves need to be checked...more often than not they are stuck open and not doing their job...

where are the check valves? are the replaceable? just wondering if this could cause the ski to run rough?

I replaced the check valves in my son's 95 XP and that cleared up all my fuel problems. There should be a vent connector comming off the gas tank that goes up and splits. On the 95 XP and the 96 XP it goes from fuel tank up to a tee. Then one goes to top of ski where the hood latch is. The other one goes to the port side about 1/4 inch below the seam near where your left foot goes if all the way to the front. On the one to the side of the hull the valve is at the end of the hose. On the one that goes to top the valve is a round white and black piece between the tee and the top.

Number's 26 and 39 on top left have to zoom in to see: http://www.seadoopartshouse.com/#/Sea-Doo/SPX,_5636//5828,_1999/02-_Fuel_System/5731/7179
