Thanks for the reply, I've kinda put the XP on the back burner as far as the cosmetics. Had a hellava fun time riding it this summer. It's gonna be a winter project, probably just gonna paint the hood.

Lou

I started getting it back up and running in the spring because the kids wanted to go out again I am still working out the kinks, good luck with your project.

Lou, I painted my hood. Beentrying to post some pictures of it. Im an auto painter so it wasn't a problem. I think seadoo gave the yellow paint code in one of the manuals

i got my xp out this past weekend, since dad got hurt i've been pulling 18-20 hour days, and saterday i said screw work its 85 degrees and i'm hitting the water!!

Good for you.

I was going to go out last Sat... but the east coast hurricane hit land early, and left Pitt overcast, and a little cool.

Well I've been putting some hours on my new (to me) 96' XP and man this thing is a blast!!! Best jet ski hands down and thats saying a lot :) I like it more than my buddys RXP which I've logged some hours on. Last Sunday I think I had the worst crash I've ever had lol. Its always really rough at the lakes around here but last Sunday everyone and their brother came out to enjoy the good weather after the hurricane. I was haulin ass through the rough full throttle and two massive waves crashed together and formed a nice 4' peak or so right in front of me and launched me way up in the air. I landed off balance and was immediately shot right back up in the air from another set of the same waves which caused me to somehow end up with my feet over my head:lols:. I tried to bail but ended up smacking my jaw (and surprisingly not biting off the top of my tongue) right on the seat and taking the blunt of the force with my knee to some solid fiberglass area. I had to go into work on crouches Monday because my knee was completely swollen and hurt like hell to walk on LOL.

How is your dad doing? You said he got pretty busted up in that ATV crash a couple weeks ago.

he did. he was in the icu for a week, then they got him off the ventalator, a reg hospital room for a week, now he's in the rehab center and has come down with nomoania in both lungs.

Spec II Pipe?

Hey, does anyone know where I can get a Spec II pipe? I just got my carbs, MSD ignition and high compression head recently. Can't wait to see how it'll all play together :)

you got to search for the pipe and when you find one get ready to pay out your nose for it.

also be careful with that msd, i've heard it doesn't play nice with you mpem.

I'm prepared for the Pipe's cost, it's my gift to me for spending all this time in Phoenix. Can't WAIT to get back to NC!

About the MSD: I thought it replaces the MPEM... it's not just a rev limiter, it's the whole big module: the MSD Ignition Enhancer.

Sorry on the pipe bro...I just had a great offer from a person in a hurry and I had not heard from you for a few days. Its going on a boat for the WF...

Yea, no worries. I finally got to go home for the weekend and spent all the time with family/gf, that's why I didn't contact you during those days. I'll keep looking. I keep finding Spec I pipes but I don't want to settle... (it's looking like I may have to though)

yeah from what i've read a spec 2 will burn pto pistons quick. a spec 1 is less likely to burn them. i've never seen one that has done that tho, but i've only ever seen spec 1's on the rec machines i work on. i think i have only ever seen 1 spec 2.

Ho do I know if I need higher octane?

At what point do I start running higher octance fuels (higher than premium pump gas)? Is that a factor of the compression ratio, RPM, horsepower, all of the above? Is it something that can be judged by plug color? I'm going to put some mods on my XP and don't want to have to run racing fuel, will a Spec I pipe with ECWI, 41mm Mikuni Racing carbs, 185lbs compression and MSD ignition be too much for 93 Octane?

its all about compression. don't quote me on this but i believe anything over 165-170lbs you'll need to switch to race fuel.

It's mostly about compression... but there are a bunch of other factors. The other big factor is ignition timing. BUT.... assuming a stock engine, in good condition... then yep... 170 is getting close to needing better fuel. If the cyl head is cut properly... and the squash gap is maintained... then you can get a seadoo engine into the 180 mark. BUT... if you just "Shave the head"... then even 170 could be too much.

With the above mods... you will make great HP... but you will have to make sure you are jetted spot-on, and all the engine tolerances are perfect. The more HP you build, the better the build quality needs to be. Also... with the MSD, and the higher rev-limiter... that engine will eat itself very quick if you run lean. SO... error on the rich side, and lean it out as needed.

One last thought... if you are going to take an old, but good running engine, and mod it... don't expect it to last long. The extra RPM, and internal pressures are going to kill old bearings, and rings quickly.

I see. Well, I've got my fingers crossed that the lower crank and balance shaft bearings can hold up just as long as the new pistons/rings and wrist pin bearings. I checked the tolerances between the crank and the connecting rod and it's w/in spec. I'm using Amzoil in it too.

Sounds like 170 is my target. I got this engine (blown up) from someone else who knows little about it. It is my belief that the head is shaved. I have no other explanation for why the compression is so high. Can I reduce the compression by getting a thicker base gasket? Does my squish band HAVE to be a certain number, or can I make it wider as needed? I just found a seller for my Spec I pipe :D I can't wait to get that XP back on the water! Even the thought of working on it makes me drool... Can't wait to get back to my shop!
