The X4 Thread

So why does everyone always poo poo 951s? What's the common fault in these engines, and how can you brace for it? Is it the crank? Is it internal design? I always hear of these breaking... If I were to ever do a conversion on my X4, I'd want to make it bulletproof...
Great question IDO. There is no inherent design flaw in Seadoo 951 mtrs other than your spinning twin MONSTER pistons at high rpm. When things go wrong it gets mechanically- financially ugly relative to 657 gerbil mtr. Huge strides have been made during last decade keeping these mtrs alive.

My money is on a 951 vs 787. Less rotating parts! Lets hear some arguments otherwise

Couple issues. When a piston the size of a small block chevy seizes the crank rod on 951 breaks thus becoming an aluminum chain saw. Early years in racing we used Honda CR 500 rods, challenging because they are 1mm shorter but unbreakable. Hot Rods now builds very robust crankshafts. Piston durabilty under poor tuner choices was next hurdle. The factory SD 951 DI built a piston with much taller upper ring landing to support the mtrs high compression and operating temps. Wider makes a duplicate piston. There is no replacement for displacement. 135 hp is a magic number for an X4 making them a a white knuckle ride. Achieving this by building a 787 high strung 7500 rpm expensive high maint mtr, or bolting in a stock 6700 rpm 951. I will personally never mess with those 787 mouse mtrs again. (:

So you're saying a 951 with a hot rods crank is the way to go? What's a better piston for it than original? I've never heard of the brand wider. Do you mean wiseco?

67mph
So, on GPS how fast is the 951 x4?

Have not tested since first day . We clicked off 68.4 . We have it so agressively glued to water now for buoy racing i would surprised if hits 65mph. First race he did beat twin 08 rxpx 255 boats to first buoy. It really does not feel safe above 65.

All the boats I have built end up in the Doug Lawanakis 2 stroke museum in his cabin in Oregon Cascade mountains. He has at least 100 machines from sleds,to scooters, race boats, . Neat place. Im typically so overwhelmed at display in his shop my phone never leaves my pocket. Hx 787 carbon mod is my fav

Can someone, with factory graphics still on, measure and tell me the length and height of the SEADOO decal on the hull below rub rail. Just the length from the long lower leg of the S to the end of the second O (dont include the pink stuff just the lettering) and also the lettering height. Im looking to get some decals and not sure if I want to go with 24" 32" or 36", I want it to look like the factory sized logo. Ive found several decals, Im thinking 24 is too short and 36 might be a little big but not sure yet.

Thanks ahead of time.

Call Mike at pwcgraphics.com he had the correct size and can print what ever you can dream up.

Thanks for your input Dan.

That was one of the places/sizes I was referring to, I saw his seadoo hull logos are 32" long x 3 3/4" tall. Hes got under industry logos > seadoo 8" 12" 14" 18" 24" lengths also.

Theres also one on ebay called a windsheild decal thats 36" long x 4" tall. I might get one of those in matte black to put on the rear window of my Jeep. Theres also hull decals 2x 32" long and 2x 8" long for $26 shipped, height is not mentioned. And yet another one thats 31 3/4" x 3 5/8".

Seems like the 32" length would be about right on the hull.
