well, i'm one of those annoying family members that rarely lets family ride my ski
, i ride solo, i've got my ride buddies, and i have avoided bringing my single ski to family outings since i prefer not to turn my ski loose on its own with novice riders. If i can ride along on another ski, fine, but I don't like just giving up the lanyard and saying 'see you in 45 minutes' novice riders scare me on the xp because if they get a death grip on the bars when the xp tosses them, they'll flip or sink my ski and that would not be good.
i prefer to supervise when people ride my ski, that way there is no guilt, discussion or issues if the dam thing breaks, but i'd turn my mechanic loose on it, my brother in law for sure, my daughter and me, that short list of 4 are the people i'm willing to take responsibility for. now,, i've traded rides with people i'm familiar with when i know that they know how to ride a ski, and more importantly how to fall off a ski.
for example, my yamaha Xl760 was a big pig of a 3 seater, you couldn't tip it over unless you tried really really hard and just flatly refused to let go of the bars and fall into the water. on my xp however, I can expect a novice rider to get thrown a couple of times if they're not careful and have a much higher chance of flipping the ski because they don't let go of the bars. i would rather let them sink their own ski
with all that said for a short while i will have a double trailer and two personal ski's, probably from november to march. so i'll probably be inviting some family members out for some rides. And i'll include some reminders like ''please do go out there and do another 8 mile WOT run down the river...., its bad for the ski, ease up on it now and then"
