Ive always had the shop do it, but they are busy and I didnt want to wait. Have a 2002 Merc 240 X-20, located the screws, drained the oil, but having a hard time getting the oil back in the pump. Every time I squirt some oil in it just comes running out. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Are you using the special pump that screws into the bottle of Mercury lube? Screw the hose from that into the CENTER hole. Pump until lube starts coming out of the OFFSET hole. Install the screw + gasket into the OFFSET hole, then remove the hose from the CENTER hole - the lube is thick enough to not run freely out once the offset hole is plugged. Then install the screw + gasket in the center hole. Done.

BTW, it holds a bit more than one bottle of lube.

More: Just had another thought. You must leave out both screws while filling. Otherwise, the displaced air has no place to go and you'll get pressurized lube right back out. Any chance that's what you're doing?

What special pump? I guess I should go buy some merc lube and see what you are talking about. Is it built into the bottle? Would be nice if there was something to screw into the fill hole.

Thanks for the reply.

PS manual says capacity is 24 oz.

I went to the marine shop and see the pump you are talking about. Did the change and it really is a piece of cake with the right tool. Quicksilver made the pump too short however and you have to pour the last bit of oil in a shallow pan to get the pump full to 24 oz. Thanks for the help

If you don't have the pump, how on earth are you getting the lube up there in the first place?

The pump screws into the lube bottle in place of its cap. It's like hand lotion - you depress the plunger and lube is driven out, through a tube, to a threaded tip that screws directly in place of the plug on the jetdrive housing.

Not having the pump explains everything. For ~$10 your problem will disappear.

Oops, sorry. My mistake. The stator lube capacity is 19 ounces, and the gearcase (what we're talking about here) is 27 ounces. A single bottle will fill either, but you'll be switching bottles in the middle of the second one. My usual sequence ends up having me switch bottles on the gearcase so while typing fast I thought it took more than one full bottle.

Speaking of that: Don't forget to service the stator lube too.

No problem. The pump is not really optional, as you discovered.

Glad things have worked out!

it took me forever to find this informaton ! The manual does not mention anything about this and i gave up and was half way from removing the pump just to fill it with oil .
