RESTO 1997 Seadoo Spx Restore/ Rebuild

Ok, so I have a question for everyone who is familiar with doing the carb rebuilds and or premixing the fuel. I rebuilt the carbs myself, first time doing jetski carbs, but I used mikuni valves/seats and then the SBT gasket/diaphram kit. I used the stock size of 1.5mm seat. Stock spring and this seat size says around 17psi on the pop off according to the manual and both carbs are showing that.

Now, the boat fires right up from a cold start and idles really well, and runs great at all throttle openings.

but when I go to shut it off after its been warmed up, its hard to start, i have to hold the throttle wide open and hold the starter button for about 5 seconds and then itll start to fire but i have to keep it WOT for another 5-10 sec before it'll rev up and clear up, then it runs well again.

let it cool down and it fires right up no problem.

Does this sound like like maybe a carb issue or maybe did i get to much oil in the premix, I was shooting for 50:1 premix with xps synthetic, but I ended up putting just a little bit more oil than that (for the break in)

Any help would be much appreciated!!

I'm thinking your pop off pressure is too low and allowing fuel to leak into engine... I just rebuild my carbs and pop off was about 32 psi. I remember lookin it up on here and that was within spec. You have to change the spring under the arm that holds the needle to seat. Spray some wd40 in it then check pop off pressure. Your gonna have to take carbs off again:( oh and proper ratio for oil is 40 to 1

Hey stove check out my 95 xp. I think you might like this one also. Love workin on them and cleaning the up.

Ok, well I may have assumed incorrectly on this graph.....thats what I get for assuming!:banghead: Here is a picture of the graph and I just "assumed" that the stock spring would be the lowest spring tension on the graph and that is what the pop of pressure on my carbs was when i checked it, and I did make sure to use Wd-40 on the needle and seat.

You have to use the 80 gram spring! That xp is almost 20 years old and it looks great(still). I get a lot of comments on that one and it runs like a BEAST! That's why I can't wait to test my spx. It's got 25 more horses! Oh yeah!

yeah, that little extra bit of motor should be a blast for ya! and thanks for the help on the carbs! im gunna pick up a mikuni tuning book for these carbs and really dig into them to get a better understanding on the in and outs of them!

the jetskis that we service at our shop are limited to the 4stroke fuel injected models, so i haven't worked on any 2 stroke model carbs before. Like i said originally when i started the thread, i bought the boat more for the learning experience, and the fact i'll have a toy allowed me to invest the money!!

Hey stove I got some rough news... I finally finished everything on spx and decided to run it on hose. Put brand new agm battery and I press the start button and all I got was a clunk. So upon further investigation I took starter apart and the damn thing is toast! Black and burned inside, brushes worn out and rust everywhere! Now I'm Gina try to get it rebuilt but I think in the market for a good used. Sucks because more waiting:(

Oh no,major bummer! well hopefully you can get your hands on one fairly cheap? i just finished up goin through my carbs again and im gunna hafta take it to the lake again to see how it runs.... pop offs tested 42psi on the mag carb and 38 on the pto carb... hope thatll help with the starting issues!

let me know when you get your starter situation figured out and good luck!!!

So after a coffee fueled brainstorm I remembered that I had an extra starter for my xp at a friends house! The starter was immaculate and freshwater use only! I know the starter is a diff bendix tooth count so I just replaced the brush hood. The starter has been fixed now I just have to install it!

Great!!! Get that bad boy running!

I took mine out saturday, sunday, and monday over memorial day weekend and I can't tell you how great it was to really take that thing out and put her through her paces! Ran like a champ all weekend, had a bunch of people wanting to toy around with me and my gf while we were messing around and not a single one of them could keep up with me, even with my girl on the back! Couldn't be more pleased!

I even wake boarded behind it andit had no troubles pulling me around!! I'm just suuuper soar today now haha

So the starting issues were because the pop off was too low then? I guess I was right! Awesome!

Yes sir!!! Spot on! I really appreciate the suggestion on it!! It run flawlessly since i changed out the springs to the stiffer ones I had. I just picked up a new Buzzer/Beeper from radio shack and gunna get that put on tonight...... then I just need to get it looking pretty! And itll be 100%

Let me know when you get yours on the water and tested, and get me some pics of her out there! I'm really considering the looks of yours as the main inspiration for mine (won't copy ya though haha) Good luck!!!

I just changed my beeper last year for a "good" used one of eBay and it worked when I tested it. Now it's acting up and only works sometimes :( let me know how the radio shack one works. I might just get one! But I luv the original tone " beep beep" so let me know if it sounds the same!

Sounds the same, but is a tad bigger and doesn't fit the OEM mount.

the beeper works well and since my cover an mount were already falling apart modifying didnt hurt my feelings to bad haha, but just got inside from workin on it and its all good! my only concern for the beeper not workin was not having a warning if the engine overheats. it should be loud enough to catch my attention so im happy with that!

So racer if it doesnt mount what do you mount it to???

My mount tabs were already broken so i removed them the rest of the way to make room for the wider beeper housing, the "nose of the beeper fits right into the original groove just fine, then i snugged the body of the beeper into the styrofoam, its a tight fit, but i didnt have to cut it at all.

If you don't want to modify the braket, you could cut the groove in the styrofoam deeper and just allow that to sit snug in the foam

Hey stove.. I just replaced the beeper for a begetter used I had layin around( I forgot I had it).. But today is the day I'm gonna put it in the water! We are goin after work today at 5 pm! Supposed to be 90 degrees and sunny so here we go!!! I will try to get a pic!

I wish that the crap I have stock piled up would come in handy like that!! Mano really lucked out by remembering having the things he needed, my luck is that I would have bought new ones and remembered the old ones afterwards haha
