Jet ski accident injures 3-year-old
3-year-old injured when riding a jet ski on Cass Lake in West Bloomfield.

DETROIT -

A beautiful Sunday on Cass Lake in West Bloomfield quickly turned to panic when a 3-year-old boy is flung off a jet ski and hits a dock.

One of the boys parents was walking the jet ski in the water while the boy was sitting on the jet ski. That's when he hit the gas and lost control hitting his head on the dock.

A good samaritan heard the accident and raced to help. "He was obviously going into shock. I wrapped him up in a towel the best I could. You could see a cut on the left side of his face...he was bleeding out of his nose and out of his mouth," said Liz Pariseau who performed CPR on the boy.

The boy was rushed to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. Police did not release his condition.

He was taking out the gun to leave inside his van.
He underwent surgery to remove the bullet and is expected to recover.

Police said the man did have a permit to carry the gun, but could still face a misdemeanor charge for unlawfully discharging a firearm.

Conn. man calls 911 over beef about sandwich order

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. — A man angry that a deli had fouled up his sandwich order decided to take his beef to police.

The man, identified by police as Rother McLennon of East Hartford, called 911 on Wednesday and complained that he "specifically asked for little turkey and little ham, a lot of cheese and a lot of mayonnaise," and the Grateful Deli in East Hartford got it wrong.

"You're calling 911 because you don't like way that they're making your sandwich?" the dispatcher asked.

"Exactly," McLennon replied.

McLennon explained that that the person he was talking to at the deli was not the person who made the sandwich and was refusing to fix the problem.

"I mean, I just want to solve this the right way," he said. "Her sister made it, but she left. They are playing games with me, so I was just wondering if you could come by. I just want it resolved and I want to be able to come back here and get the regular sandwich that I ask for."

Before ending the call, the dispatcher advised him not to buy the sandwich.

Deli owner Tila Azinheira tells WVIT-TV ( http://bit.ly/MKi5bR) that McLennon had placed an order for 14 sandwiches and the deli made them to his specifications. She said he was told that because the sandwiches were special orders, the deli couldn't take them back.

She said he used her phone to call police.

McLennon called the deli back on Thursday to apologize, she said.

"I think the customer realized how wrong he was," she said.

No charges have been filed.

Attempts to reach McLennon weren't successful. There was no listing for a telephone number at his address.

The Telegram & Gazette ( http://bit.ly/KyIRYF) reports that police say they found a cup filled with alcohol in her car.

There were golfers on the course at the time, but no one was hurt.

Former astronaut Poindexter dies in ski jet accident

STS-131 commander Alan Poindexter poses for a photo in the Cupola of the Int...

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida — Alan Poindexter, a two-time shuttle astronaut, has died after a jet ski accident in Pensacola, Florida, NASA said on Monday.

"The NASA family was sad to learn of the passing of our former friend and colleague Alan Poindexter," NASA wrote in a Facebook post. ?"Our thought and hearts are with his family."

Poindexter, 50, was riding jet skis with his two sons in Little Sabine Bay at Pensacola Beach on Sunday when the accident occurred, officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission told the Pensacola News Journal.

Poindexter's older son, who is 26, crashed into the jet ski that Poindexter shared with his 22-year-old son, the newspaper reported.

The impact knocked Poindexter off the jet ski. He was pulled from the water and taken to the beach where friends attempted to revive him.

Poindexter was then flown by helicopter to Baptist Hospital where he later died from his injuries, the newspaper reported.

Poindexter's sons were not injured in the accident, which is under investigation.

Poindexter, who went by the nickname "Dex," made two space flights during his career with NASA. In February 2008, he was the pilot aboard the shuttle Atlantis on a mission to deliver the European Space Agency's Columbus laboratory module to the International Space Station.

Poindexter returned to space in April 2010 as commander of the shuttle Discovery on one of the final cargo runs to the station before the shuttles were retired.

?"He was a talented, courageous Navy veteran with gifts," astronaut Greg Johnson wrote on Twitter. "?Dex was a lovable guy with a strong work ethic."

A captain in the U.S. Navy, Poindexter left NASA in December 2010 to become dean of students at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. He earned a master of science degree in aeronautical engineering from the school in 1995.

He is the son of former National Security Adviser John Poindexter, who served in the Reagan administration.

Alan Poindexter was born in 1961 in Pasadena, California, but considered Rockville, Maryland, to be his hometown. He earned a bachelor of aerospace engineering degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology, then was commissioned in the Navy.

Poindexter flew combat missions in Iraq during Operation Desert Storm and Operation Southern Watch, then became a test pilot. He logged more than 4,000 hours flying time in more than 30 types of aircraft.

He was selected to join NASA's astronaut corps in June 1998.

Probably a good thing as he should not be reproducing.

Alligator bites off swimming teen's arm in Florida.

MOORE HAVEN, Fla. — An alligator at least 10 feet long lunged at a teenager swimming in a river and bit off the teen's right arm below the elbow, state wildlife officials said Tuesday.

Kaleb Langdale, 17, survived the encounter Monday in the Caloosahatchee River west of Lake Okeechobee. Wildlife officers who caught and killed the alligator retrieved the arm, but doctors were unable to reattach it.

"We found the alligator that was responsible," Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Jorge Pino said. "We were able to kill the alligator and dissect the alligator, remove the arm and transport the arm to the hospital to see if the doctors could reattach the limb."

The alligator was 10 or 11 feet long, Pino said.

The teen was rushed to a Fort Myers hospital. His condition was not available early Tuesday.

His friends told Fort Myers television station WBBH ( http://bit.ly/NljdlO) that while the arm could not be reattached, Langdale was in good spirits.

The alligator went straight for Langdale as he was swimming, Matt Baker said.

"It came at him and he put his arm in the way instead of letting it get to his body. It took his arm and him under," Baker said.

Another friend said Langdale popped out of the water shortly after being bitten.

"He was waving saying, `Call the paramedics! My arm is gone!'" Gary Beck said.

The Glades County area near Lake Okeechobee where Langdale was swimming is known to have several large alligators in it, Pino said.

Alligators are more active this time of year because it's their mating season, which makes them more aggressive and inquisitive as they're looking for food and for mates. Wildlife officers warn that alligators can call just about any body of water in Florida home.

"Anything that makes any splash in the water or any little commotion in the water may attract them to that particular location," Pino said.

It's rare for wild alligators to bite humans, though, Pino said.

"We have millions of people swimming in the state's waterways and nothing happens," he said.

Since 1948, 224 people have suffered major alligator bites, including 22 fatal bites, according to June 2011 conservation commission data.

Wildlife officials were investigating what caused the alligator to bit Langdale.

"We want to understand the dynamics of the bite and understand what happened -- what the alligator was doing, what the young man was doing -- to see if there's anything we can learn from this," Pino said.

Last month, an airboat captain was giving a tour in southwest Florida when a 9-foot alligator bit off his left hand. The Indiana family on the boat said the captain had hung a fish over the side of the boat and had his hand at the water's surface when the alligator bit him.

Coast Guard rescues 4 people whose boat capsized in Michigan bay

Victims had been water overnight after leaving from Saginaw Bay

4 people in Michigan bay overnight are found safe
AU GRES, Mich. -
The U.S. Coast Guard has rescued four people whose 18-foot boat capsized in a Michigan bay, forcing them to stay alive through the night.

Soon after launching from Au Gres, the waves grew and capsized the boat, leaving them stranded three miles from the shore.

They spent over fourteen hours holding on to dear life.

This wasn't their first time boating
Ryan Miller, Brian Nelson from Macomb Township

Ryan Miller and Brian Nelson from Macomb Township took a fishing trip to Saginaw Bay on Tuesday. They took with them Miller's 12-year-old son Dakota and his 10-year-old friend Jack.

"When we went out, it was like a sheet of glass," says Miller. "In a course of a half-hour, it went from calm to big rolling waves," says Miller.

That's when the trip turned into a nightmare that would never end for the boaters.

"It was called 'The Three Sisters,'" says Nelson. "It's three waves simultaneously back-to-back-to-back."
Fatigued and looking for help

Their boat capsized at about 5:30 p.m. That's when Miller left the boat to look for help.

"I was just so fatigued. I was getting awful cramps in my leg because I had to continue to paddle, or the waves could come right over my head," says Miller.

Miller says he was in the water for fourteen and a half hours.

"I went in at six o'clock and they found me at eight-thirty the next morning," says Miller.

The Coast Guard and a helicopter searched for hours Monday night and Tuesday morning. That search, ultimately, came to an end.

"My nervous moment was probably around eleven o'clock when I didn't see the chopper anymore," says Nelson.

Shortly before 7:30 a.m., rescue crews spotted the boaters. To say that the four boaters are lucky to be alive, is an understatement.

"We learned a lot and it's not going to stop me from living my life," says Miller.
What the Coast Guard says they did right

All four had on life jackets
They had a "float plan" with someone on-shore
They stayed with the boat

The boaters walked away with a few cuts from wearing the life-vests for a long time, some bumps and bruises from being hit by the boat and fatigue from being left in the water for many hours.

They have scheduled another boat trip for later this month.

umm, what is wrong with this sentence????

"He was waving saying, `Call the paramedics! My arm is gone!'" Gary Beck said.

SPRING LAKE, Mich. -

A woman is recovering after her car hit a docked boat in west Michigan.

Police said the car landed on top of a boat that was docked at a marina behind a Holiday Inn in Spring Lake just before 6 a.m.

WOOD-TV reported the woman backed into a front loader and then jolted her Toyota RAV4 forward, going between some trees before hitting the boat.
The woman wasn't seriously hurt, but suffered cuts to her face.

WOOD-TV reported no one was on the boat at the time of the crash and the car was lifted off with a crane.

In BC Canada no one under 16 can obtain a "pleasure craft operator's card" that entitles them to take a machine out on their own - but this is for a generic boating license and the info and test is 90% related to the "rules of the sea" and little on pwc's. Regardless that's just
"book information" only anyway. I would like to see the statistics in this article compared to boating statistics. Unfortunately accidents are going to happen regardless of how it's regulated (see Vehicles, Automotive). It's impossible to legislate out stupidity and believe me BC etc has tried. The short answers in my opinion are - increasing requirements for rentals, increased pwc information on the boating licenses and lastly - the only real solution is increased monitoring on the water by the police (by saying that I prefer the "monitoring" aspect.( See an idiot stop an idiot).

Otherwise there is little that can be done IMO. Limiting HP or speed is not a true prevention because a machine at 20 MPH will still hurt someone bad. On the other hand 260 HP is excessive to me....

Lamajama...I guess you changed the post,,,,not what I rec'd by email.... But you are right, it's terrible that people died.

Anyways, I bought a new boat but it's take 18 months to build...so I might cancel the order.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_o8N-RA_DSo&feature=related

Yea I changed it. I couldn't figure out a way to say what I said without it sounding like I was a jerk. I know exactly
how you meant it and I didn't want it to have it taken the wrong way so...

By the way, pay for the boat by cheque but make tiny little mistakes each time that requires the bank to return
the cheque for correction or a re-write. That along with the postal system could get you the 18 months...!
