What I did to my 4-tec boat today...

I didn't really do anything to my boat today except ride it. Here is a map of our excursion. 76.5 miles View attachment 30796

Also, got the boat out of the water after two weeks at the coast. Ready to drive it home tomorrow.

I see you are in NC...so am I but I have never taken my boat to the coast, we're stricktly lake people. How do you like i...the ocean.

After pulling the motor and starting the teardown I took the exhaust manifold off to find that a hole had worn in the water jacket (I assume from vibrations between the manifold and exhaust pipe). After sitting for a while 45 min to an hour the hole was letting water sit on top of the cylinders and causing it not to start. It wouldnt cause any problems in short time stops only when stopped for longer periods of time.. She left me stranded 7-4-13 & we're just now weeding out all the bugs from the rebuild. Last year one "Platinum Certified Seadoo Dealer" had a tech that wanted to pull the motor back out and replace the stator, I pulled a corroded fuse rite in front of him and decided to do if all myself because after 5 months of talking to technicians and doing my own research I figured I already knew more than they could tell me.

i know how you feel...
great job!!!

I love the coast for a few reasons.

1) it's a different type of boating than lake boating (which I also like). You can get on the ICW and go for miles. It's more of an expedition type of boating than an activity type of boating.

2) we rent a house on Holden Beach that's on the canals, so we have instant access to the boat during our vacation. (House is relatively inexpensive, compared to hotels, too. I never pay more than $900 per week -7 days, 7 nights). In fact, we only went to the beach (about an 800 yard walk) once. But, we went to dinner on the boat 7 times in two weeks. Evening boating on the ICW is awesome. And, as you can tell, we like to go out into the ocean to see Dolphins, explore, and even see a shark or two.

So, I like lake and coastal boating. Just for different reasons.

Pulled the pumps to change the wear rings. Trying the freezer method, but have an impeller removal tool, just in case.

Got the rope out of the intake i sucked up 2 weeks ago...lol Also started removing the old decals from the boat.

I like the Christmas lights......seems you are ready for a 'Christmas in July Party'. HaHaHa. Hope you have a good sense of humor. Good luck with the engine.

Man, I got super busy and then had surgery which killed going up the ladder. I will say it's on the list of things to do.....like fix that engine. And yes I have a sense of humor. It's great for parties!

Reassembled and reinstalled the pumps. Ready for a lake test.

Found some brand new impellers for $249 each that matched my part numbers (different part number for each pump). I'll install those when they arrive and keep the existing impellers as spares.

Just washed and waxed the boat today. Scrubbed the hydroturf, it was looking real rough, now looks new again. Removed tannin stains from the bottom with cheap walmart hull cleaner (works great). And adjusted the winch stop to balance the tongue weight.

Nice! What cleaner did you use on the hydroturf (besides elbow grease)?

You said you balanced the tongue weight. A balanced tow trailer will fishtail. You need tongue weight to tow properly. Tongue weight should be about 5% to 10% of total weight trailer-ed. The Sportster's weight is 1500 lbs with fuel and trailer weight add another 600 lbs. I usually go about 8%, so your tongue weight should be 8% of 2100 lbs or 168 lbs.

My rigs total weight is about 2800 lbs multiply by 8% = 224 lbs. I use a bathroom scale and a 2x4 to get the tongue weight. My Ford V8 F-150 doesn't know it is pulling a boat.

Just some car wash soap, warm water and a stiff scrub brush came up real easy.

Sorry I didn't mean balance it. Your right it would fishtail like crazy. Since I have the spare tire mounted on front I had to move the winch back to compensate the extra weight added.

Rebuilt the starboard side jet pump. Went to install the new impellers, and saw water contamination. Will get the pumps sealed back up and installed today with new impellers.

I finally snapped a few pics of my recent upgrades.

1st and most important (LOL) was the stereo. I swapped all Jensen parts and the new system is so loud it hurts my ears at half volume...not to mention the sub makes the chairs vibrate so I get a massage as well. Sony head unit (Bluetooth capable), 4- 6.5 JL Audio MX series speakers, 1- 10" JL Audio sub, all powered by a JL Audio M600/6 amp, and run off an aux battery.

I had a friend slip off the back deck a couple of weekends ago and that following Monday I was on the phone with Hydra- Turf. I ordered a back foam mat which I couldn't be happier with. We will see tomorrow how it performs tomorrow...

lol, the same thing happened to me....I'm about to order some too but for the whole boat!

Also about your speakers. Did you reuse the same wire or new wire? Also how did you put the sub in and where did you put your amp? That's all something I want to do in the not so distant future.

Nos...I want to do the entire boat in Hydro Turf as well but the original carpet is still in good condition so I'm holding off for the time being.

If you look at the picture of my head unit you can see where my amp is mounted. It's mounted on the back wall of the glove box, up and out of the way and is a digital amp so I don't have to worry so much about it over heating.

As for the speakers I did reuse the original speaker wires and the sub I just drilled a hole and ran the wiring back to the batteries.

Hope this helps and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Truer words have never been spoken.......Had a rough (in and out of the shop $$$$$$) kind of year last year.......So it was really nice for for my baby to wake up from winter sleep responding strong!!!!!

In Florida we have a few cold days but boat most of the year. Only had a few minor problems this year. The the guys here help diagnosis and I fixed them. One was with the Start/Stop switch that I replaced. I had my 2008 Kavaran trailer rebuilt last week. I boat mostly in salt water so I had more problems with my trailer then boaters that use their boast in fresh water. So now I'm ready for a trip to the Florida Keys. Probably go some times in November after the end of hurricane season.

So this weekend I bought a tube and tested out that process. It was pretty cool. I didn't get to tube myself. I was too busy freaking out about not sucking up a rope.
