What are you guys using to pull your boat? I used sold my SUV & now Im stuck

I tow my 99 Speedster with my 97 GMC Yukon with 197K on the original engine. I know guys love their import trucks, but the 96 and up GM Tahoe's and Yukon's are bullet proof, big and comfy. Not the best on gas around town but they are a great towing vehicle.

I tow my 2005 speedster (1594 lbs) with my 2009 4 cyl Honda Accord. The Honda is rated for 2000 lbs. While a truck would be nice i too had to get rid of the gas hog. 2 yrs and all is good.

Well I sold my SUV because it was a great opportunity to jump out of it and get something new with warranty, my SUV ran out of warranty last year, and I was concerned.

Well, I jumped into a car not a SUV because I was making payments on an SUV that I only used very little and it was really bad in gas, also I needed new tires, front axles, so i figured I better jump out right now, buy the car I always wanted and purchase a used truck to tow my boat, even a used Toyota 4Runner or Truck or Ford F150..

My Speedster with trailer is less than 2,000 pounds I think, so even car can pull it.. what do you guys suggest? I dont want to spend too much, because remember I use it only on the weekends or whenever I go with my boat.

My insurance agent laughed because he said I would be towing my "new" boat with a "used" truck, but i think it makes the most financial sense....

I have a GMC Silverado 4X4 to pull my sportster. I never have to worry on said or boat launches. It's scary some of the launches I have seen with some small cars or vans.

You sure Honda says 2000lb? All the info i can find shows 1000lb for the 09 accord. No worries, same capacity as mine !

Might be nice to some...but like i mentioned before. Not smart or legal. That boat loaded with fluids on the trailer is over 2000 lbs. Guaranteed.

Oh Foster, did you really open that can of worms over here now too! (smile) We beat the hell out of that dead horse in the towing forum. We just can't fix them, Darwin tried to sort them out.

This is why i don't normally post anything. I was not offering expert advice, just my own experience. I would rather have a big truck but i don't. Besides i travel only a couple miles every time i use it not down the mountain.

You are correct, the "hitch" has a 2000lb towing capacity.

Don't let any of our comments sway you from posting. Please take them in fun most of the time. It's these sorts of conversations that bring things to light. We never want to hassle or tease anyone into not sharing. That goes against the whole point of an open forum.

I believe your experience is very important to share as there are plenty of others that would like to tow their PWC down the street with that size of car. Just keep in mind that their mileage may vary.

Thanks for sharing!

If we couldn't give each other crap, then comments like Diggin posted above would slide! "I have a GMC Silverado 4X4 to pull my sportster" We all know GMC never made a Silverado! Come on! Us GMC Sierra owners are insulted! (smile)

I was looking back through this and noticed someone checked my post as not helpful....Thats funny. I just give advice saying its not a good idea to tow illegally and thats bad... :banghead:

That's funny.. In this economy, You get negative review if you give honest or free advice LOL

^HOLY SMOKES!!! THAT'S IMPRESSIVE.lol. Is that Chevy even rated to tow the sportser?? Mind you the sportser is pretty light. When you say illegal...how?

I just saw your question. Sorry I never replied. Its illegal when you decide to tow with either a vehicle that isnt rated to tow or you grossly exceed the maximum recommended weight. Vehicles are designed for a specific maximum weight. Their brakes are designed to stop a specific maximum weight. You go over that, you are not very safe. Its negligent which is also illegal. Ask me how i know.

I work in public safety. I saw a wreck involving a mid 90's dodge dakota towing a trailer. That trailer contained a bobcat loader. The total trailer weight was way over the manufacturers maximum weight recommendation. While towing the bobcat, the dakota was unable to safely brake. The driver, unable to stop, skid through an intersection hitting a car with a family of 4 in it. Both kids in the back seat were killed. The driver played the dumb card and acted oblivious. He was charged and subsequently found guilty of multiple charges.

This isnt the only case ive seen involving drivers towing outside of the vehicle specs and being charged. People do tow more than they should or with cars not intended to tow. Most of the time its no big deal. But do you want to be that person who kills someone's kids?

You will never see me tell someone its ok to tow with a vehicle beyond the manufacturers recommendations. Its dumb and illegal. But then again, my opinion is biased. I've seen what mangled kids look like.

I tow my 2004 sportster with my 07 ford focus. It does great pulling and still get 28mpg with it. Been pulling trailers for year with no problem. But I wouldn't recommend pulling it on ice with my car.

Can't go wrong with a Tundra. This big 230 only levels my truck out when hooked up. I have absolutely no problems pulling or launching with this thing. I'd buy another and another right now if i could.
