I’m not sure what the issue is but I’m pretty sure it’s internal, I’ve taken the impellar housing off so I’m spinning just the motor and the shaft

i don’t really have a issue rebuilding it myself if thats what it needs but, I was told by a local mechanic that it’s about the same to just replace the whole motor. It’s the 717 motor I believe he quoted me 1300 and 1800 total to do the work. Let me know what you guys think.

thanks.

What does it sound like running?

I'm thinking crank bearing. They have a plastic coveyr in them. They have been know to break down over time and the balls will not be spaced any more. Pretend the cage broke, this is what the bearing would look like.

This is just a guess. I think further digging will be required. If you're going that route, do yourself a huge favor and remove the PTO before you pull the head and cylinders it the engine from the hull. You'll need to pull the driveshaft, use an impeller tool land turn the engine over by hand to get the PTO piston to TDC. The take it back a little bit, use some clothes line and put it in the spark plug hole, probably about 3' worth then loosen the PTO off the crank. The rope will jamb the piston with the rope to the cylinder head. This allowing you to break the PTO free. I suggest do all that while still in the hull, so much easier than chasing it across the garage floor.

Running at idle it makes all kinds of noises. Sounds like it’s something in the impeller housing but I took that off and the impeller spins freely and smooth. Not sure of some of the jet ski lingo, what is PTO and how do I get the output shaft off?

The PTO is that thing that you were grabbing and turning. To get the drive shaft out you have to pull the jet pump. Mine usually come out with the pump which is a bit annoying.

Well the oil return line was a big surprise, wasn't expecting that, Whats the best to control that?

So I got the whole motor out and tore down, the piston closes to the PTO got into the cylinder wall for sure, lots of scoring, Starter ring gear was also dragging against starter so it's possible the starter wasn't seating properly either. Crank spins fine without anything attach and your spinning it by hand but when you spin the bearings you can feel some resistance. I'm guessing new crank with bearings and at least new piston with sleeve?
