If its that nice I would urge you to leave it; as much as I'd love to own a mint 95xp800 I just wouldnt want to ride it to keep it mint.

There just arent the super mint machines around anymore...my buddy wants to rip those 98 graphics off but I wont let him.

I love the stock graphics on the 98 SPX. Looks like the 2 inch rise seat fits good even with stock bars. I found one for a decent deal, but by the time I paid to ship it I could have almost bought a brand new cover and modified my current seat. I ended up buying a hump seat from the same guy. It should be here tomorrow along with my lift wedges. Its going to get the jet trim treatment asap. I'll be sure to tell them you sent me and to hook a brother up with a matching koozie. Gotta keep the Keystone cool after a day of riding HAHA

What material is the top panel of your jet trim seats?

i paid $500.00 for the hx cause the guy said it wouldnt run in the water but ran great on the trailer. i pulled and cleaned tha carbs and changed the gray fuel lines and now it runs like a champ so ive got it on craigslist for $1000.00 (no trailer) and have a guy coming tonight to buy it. 100% profit. took the 95 xp out last night and runs great but when i pit it back on the trailer and pulled the seat the engine compartment was 3/4 full. gonna update the carbon wear ring and also found the big plastic nut on the outside of the vts was loose so im pretty sure thats where it was taking in water. also seems like a bit of cavitation on the holeshot and hopefully the carbon ring will help that.

Damn man you stole it. The UMI is worth right at what you gave for it.

if the UMI was on a $500 ski,, i'm too lazy to find the original post but i'm assuming its on this HX, i'd probably remove it asap and put stock on (a bit of work but worth the time) the ski isn't worth 'that' much more with UMI installed on it. an hx thats running is worth $1000+ all day long even with no handlebars, let alone UMI.

Picked up my First X4 in April, just read all 50 pages of this thread and figured i would post up a pic of my 1996 Xp. When i picked it up.

Dont mind the trailer lol
On a technical note, it was leaking from the water regulator so i took it apart and cleaned it, there are no holes in the bellow, but does anyone know how far the screw that goes from the bottom side is suppossed to be tightened down? snug?

well i found the "too good to be true" in this new ski. took it out and the hull flooded. thought it was a loose vts bolt , the plastic one. it was loose a little. then to my horror i look down and the lip of the jug is sticking out past the head uuuuuugggggggggggg ...... so it wasnt properly winterized and the water jacket froze and blew out past the head and now it pours water into the hull....WTFFFFFFFFF...

Hey guys I have been looking into getting a x4 for a while and I found a good deal on what looks like a 98spx and a gsx with a trailer the owners just want to get rid of them. Here's the catch the gsx runs good but the spx doesn't he thinks it might have sucked up some water he forgot to put one of the plugs into it...would the vts and the mpem be toast? Or is it not worth rebuilding the motor if it in fact sucked water in and hydro locked it? I'm going to look at it this weekend

OK guys I need a second opinion on this one... I've got a practically mint condition 96 XP with the stock graphics and seat. Everyone thinks its ugly as hell and I can also see much room for improvement after seeing some skis on here (especially minnetonka4me's and his carbon fiber hoods) but I feel bad and wasteful about ripping off such mint graphics on a ski of this age. Its always been garage kept so the graphics are not the slight bit faded, even the hood's XP logo still shines. The yellow and pink is just not my style, I much prefer the 99 SPX colors. So... Should I break down and destory an absolute mint piece of history, or rock the pink graphics and show everyone on the lake what a pink X4 800 is all about? The funny thing is the lakes around here are soo crowed that even 99% of the big stable land yatchs (rxps, gprs, etc) wont run a constant 50+ through the massive waves where as I refuse to let off WOT on my pink machine... I swear I spend more time in the air than the water LOL

People who think they're ugly have issues with masculinity or something. There's no other way to describe that. They're just pink decals, no big deal. The 95 xp 800 limited was my favourite colour scheme.

Depends on the price for the package.

if its for both, then yes, good to go, buy it now b4 he changes his mind (taking the normal precautions of course).... if its 1K for just the spx, walk away w/o a second thought, its worth half that. I buy 10-12 ski's a year, and two on trailer 1 running for 1K, no brainer, start peeling off benjamins (although no harm in offering 800 :) ) but you getting a good buy at any price under 1K.

a junk engine can be more trouble than they are worth, assuming you don't have a garage full of parts and you've taken a few of these apart in the past... so an engine replacement might make more sense, depends on if the head, crank, are save-able, the cases usually are.. and most cyl's can be bored (not all just most)

sold the hx today $1000.00. made a 100% profit. not a bad profit for only having to buy a can of carb cleaned and a couple hours of my time to clean them. damn little filters in them were clogged almost solid. good to go now. another happy customer

OK so i saw those skis today the spx has 150 and 0 compression the VHS doesn't work it needs a good cleaning and a new seat real soon the gsx has 150 in each cylinder and needs a seat too. So what do you guys think is it worth rebuilding the spx of is it too far gone?

You didn't say what the guy was asking. On the SPX you had better figure the worst case a rebuilt motor. Maybe 200-300 depending on condition, and if it includes a trailer. You also didn't say what year, what engine???

Lou

1200.00 is way too much for a non-running ski. Is this the price for both ski's. In either case we need more information. I don't think the GSX ever came with a 657.

The GSX was manufactured 1996-2000, I think.

yes too little info but even a clean 787 ski with a bad motor, = MAX $500 unless the hull is exceptional and/or exactly what you wanted.

max 400-450 for a 717, max $100 for everything smaller :)

ok so lets make everything clear here the owner is asking 1200 for the trailer a 98 spx thats broken and a gtx i said it was a gsx earlier sorry

assuming the gtx is running, good buy 1K to 1.2
gtx non running average buy,
both need motors bad buy but not deplorable, but becomes deplorable as the list below grows for you :(

so its a good buy assuming you don't get totally tic tacked to death on both skis:

and a good once over will give you a ball park on what you need to do, it add's up very fast with two used ski's.

Cables , batteries, hydroturf, carbs, new seat covers, exhaust leaks, bad throttle, fugged up gauges, bad electronics aka ebox aka mpem, trashed raves, solenoid, bad connections, messed up starter, spongy motor mounts, missing screws, gaskets, missing hinge/clasp, no working fire extinguisher, replacement exhaust hose, new fuel lines, new oil lines or block off, bad gas, non functional vts, rusted driveline, two gallons of oil, grease gun, bearings and spare tire, gunked up electrical connectors, cranks that you thought were good so you just did a top end and it blows in 20 minutes.

oh, and I forgot pump rebuilds and prop swaps :)

my guess with two ski's your hoping you have maybe only 7 of those things to do, and some are $100+ items, and some are $15.

Oh, and with exception to the last item, all of those are things that may or will have to be done regardless of whether or not your putting in a motor, over and above :)

welcome to boating !

so if only a few of those things are wrong, you're good to go ! its downhill from there.

and ya i've pretty much have had all of those things over the past 3 years lol :)

so, go buy it , assuming you can absorb the $ and hassle if/when the list grows :)

or maybe just focus on one ski at a time

Ok guys so was out riding this whole weekend and kept having problems with my ski not starting after falling off so I knew it had to be a ground. Long story short ski died after I feel off pulled it into beach lifted the negative battery cable and the whole thing came out of the ski.... So I am in need of a new battery cable for the starter( should I buy new or used)? How hard will it be to get this cable back on the starter? Should I just relocate the ground? Let me know what your guys thoughts are and if anyone has a cable for sale (sure many of you do). Thanks Guys!

I would remove the old cable and go somewhere like batteries plus and they can make you a new one up. I would not buy a used cable because there isn't a real good way to make sure they haven't rotted inside out unless you ohm it with a meter or use a megger on it. A new one shouldn't cost that much. If you pull the carbs it will be cake to reinstall
