Just thought I'd mention this to save a life... an engine. LOL I had this happen on my first 951 I built. That beyoch took off. I ended up reaching in and pinching the fuel line which killed the engine. I really never had this happen so I was unschooled. I've never trusted a 951 carb engine since. I purposely never put the airbox on so I could shove a rag in there if needed. LOL I'm always hella ready for this to happen.

Yesterday I was getting ready to test the charging system on a 2000 GTX 951. I gave he new engine some fuel to get some RPM and SHO NUFF..... it took off. I pulled the key of course and it laughed at me. Then I remembered reading on this board... PULL THE CHOKE. I had my doubts about that working 100% of the time but I PULLED the CHOKE. Bitch shut down immediately. So just thought I'd share. IF YOUR ENGINE RUNS AWAY, PULL THE CHOKE. It really does work. I feel much better now and not so paranoid.

3 NOTES: Make sure you have your choke connected and properly adjusted. Never Trust a 951. They will run away in a heartbeat. If you are starting it on the trailer before going for a ride. Just start it and shut it off. Give it no throttle

TOUCHDOWNS EVERYONE !!!

Barring a stuck open throttle....how does this happen? It’s not a diesel that can feed itself from a broken oil line

It acts exactly like a diesel.
The air fuel mixture is lean and hot enough to keep combustion going without spark. This is typically caused by an air leak from a bad gasket or seal but on the 951 they are jetted lean from the factory and people typically set the idle too high. Don’t go buy the book setting on a 951, set the idle about 200 rpm less than spec.

This won’t happen in the water because the load on the engine prevents it.

Only way to stop a runaway is cool the combustion chamber with more fuel, thus the choke or hold the throttle wide open and the stop button or pull the lanyard but keep holding it wide open. Don’t leave the airbox off because that can make it lean and contribute to the runaway.

I had a 951 run away on me years ago before i knew the correct procedure. I tried pulling the key, pulling the spark plug wires. shutting off the fuel valve.

it stopped at some point, but not until the heat damaged parts and it failed within a few runs after.

I picked one of these up last fall and got it running after full fuel system rebuild. I did not know this about the 951. Good info, thanks!

Freakin bummer.

Site is great for passing on the good stuff and Betta to learn it now that after or during. Etch it into your mind just in case. Touchdowns everyone !!

While we are handing out warnings; NEVER jump start a sea-doo (at least any of these old ones) you'll fry a $300-$900 MPEM (computer). MUCH cheaper to go buy the correct battery new.

I won't even put a battery charger on the ski without disconnecting the battery. Usually I pull the battery out.

Choke it out or plug the exhaust. Both kill engine quick. Always pressure test your engine builds to help prevent this from happening.
