1998 Seadoo Speedster project

So I've made basically no progress over the last month with work travel and family stuff other than getting the garage clean and the boat back inside.

I should have pipes back from the welder by the time I get home this weekend and will start cleaning and painting engines and exhaust.

My graphics are OK, but not great. I was thinking of putting on a wrap or something a little more modern. Anyone have experience with world class wraps?

Just a small update on progress. I got the engines painted and started cleaning up mag housings, raves, etc for paint so I can finish assembly. The wife is very happy when I leave the engines on the dining room table for the paint to cure while I'm in Tx for work lol. Spray paint is super slow to cure in a 40 degree garage.

Just ordered over $1k in parts last night to get everything back together. This thing will be essentially new from a mechanical standpoint.

I finally got my pipes back from the 2nd shop I took them to today. Somehow they claim it took them 2 hours at $75 an hour plus shop supplies to weld 8 plugs. This was after i ground all the old plugs out and privided the new plugs. I'll be having some words with them tomorrow when someone besides the receptionist is there.

I did get everything cleaned up and ready for paint so I can button up the engines.

I just had mine done today. 40$ for 4 plugs.

This weekend I finished stripping, cleaning, painting, and clear coating all the engine components. I swear that is the worst part of any rebuild for me. Took a solid 3 days since I don't have a blast cabinet.

I also got the boat out to give it another bath and pressure wash the engine bay one more time.

Peter is the man . helped me tremendously . excellent value and customer service/communication. I installed myself(first time) and if you follow installation instructions and video it goes real smooth. mine are over a year old and still look new. the boat stayed in the water all summer and is stored outdoors in winter. give him your bow number and he will embed in graphics. I didnt use the whole kit mostly just the side graphics

I got my wakeboard tower, racks, tower speakers, amps, and some other stuff this week.

Also bought one other accessory today, lol.

Yeah yeah, I hear ya. In my defense I did wear an early 90s seadoo vest today for break in lol. This thing could be a major distraction for me finishing the speedster.

Lol, that life jacket is rated at like 35mph when it was new. Then factor in the dry rotted threads and you're rated at like 7mph.

Lol, well it's the only one I could find in the attic that fit. All my good jackets are still with the boat in storage. I'm not getting over 30mph much today anyways for break in.

It’s been a busy month with vacations, work travel, fixing friends skis for them, and breaking in this foreign object with 2 extra strokes to it. We also bought some land on a private lake where my College buddy bought a waterfront house so I can now sticker and use skis there. I did make some progress on the boat although I’m still way behind where I had hoped.

New Exhaust boots from Nick who had them reproduced once Sea-doo stopped making them years ago. My old ones were only slightly dry rotted, but I didn’t want to risk taking on water after all the work that’s gone into this thing thus far. A ratcheting 10mm wrench with a flex-head made it relatively simple to replace these from the outside of the boat.

After many issues, I finally have the engines ready to drop in. I had to remove and replace 2 heli-coils in the RV covers, then I had one bolt snap off on the rear engine mount. After ordering 2 different extractor sets, it was clear that bolt wasn’t coming out. I finally drilled it out, then when going slightly larger to prepare to re-tap the freaking drill bit snapped off about 1.5 inches in. There was no way of removing that bit, so one engine is just going to have 4 bolts instead of 5 on the rear mount. I have to say that I do think they came out pretty sweet.

Starters were both rebuilt with OEM parts although I will have one 8 tooth and one 9 tooth starter. My other three 8 tooth starters I had were pretty rusty from water sitting in the mag housings. Will be interesting to see the difference in torque and speed of the two starters side by side on fresh engines.

I also got some audio stuff purchased. I went with a relatively cheap 5 channel marine amp which is freaking huge. I guess I should have measured the storage box first, but I’ll make it work for now. I also bought the Sony head unit (similar to Snikwads’) which puts out 45 watts RMS @ 4 Ohms itself. The plan is to run two 6.5s off the head unit, then the tower speakers, 2nd set of 6.5s, and a 10” sub off the amp. Still trying to decide if I want to spend the $750 needed for the rest of the JL speakers I want.

I had thought both jet pumps/wear rings were in good shape, but the oil was lumpy and there were some small out of round gaps in the wear rings. I started full rebuilds of both pumps tonight. One completely done and the other need to order another bearing kit & wear ring.

I still love this bearing tool set a member here makes. You can change bearings in 5 minutes with no shop press needed.

I know everyone has their choice for wear ring removal but my favorite is this bit on a Dremel with the flex cable. It easily cuts a wide path through the ring in no time and the ring will collapse on itself and fall out.

I made some progress over the weekend.

I made new battery cables for the 2nd battery which will connect through a new 2 battery switch in place of the single one there now. 2 gauge was a bit of overkill but I figured it's 10' of cable between the battery and new switch.
