1997 speedsterd starter problem

1997 sea doo speedster... Series of events 1. Battery drained all the way down. 2. Started to charge the battery and the starboard engine began cranking. 3. The starboard solenoid tested good. 4. The starboard start button tested good. 5. I have constant voltage to the starboard solenoid trigger wire with the start switch disconnected. No problems at all with the port side. Please tell me it's not the MPEM. Thanks is advance to anyone who can help me with this.

Only way they engine can crank as you describe it is, the solenoid is stuck closed, or, the Start/Stop button is stuck closed or shorted. That said, in a low voltage situation such as yours, it is very common for the solenoid to remain closed if the START button was pushed. Once the voltage gets to where it should be, the issue normally goes away.

To confirm, which wire are you checking when you say you have constant voltage? The small trigger wire?

As stated in the previous email, the solenoid and start/stop switch are good. Through much more research I've concluded the MPEM is malfunctioning. I'll attempt to tear into it and repair it and will leave feedback if I discover a fix. Or I'll DIY a two MPEM conversion. A close friend who is an electrical engineer seems to believe we can easily do the conversion and retain the neutral/crank safety feature and rev limiter in neutral/reverse. This will take several weeks so it will be a bit before I can leave any feedback. Thanks.

If you find that the output to the solenoid from the MPEM is the ONLY issue. I would put an inline normally open switch in the wire and mount it somewhere easy. This way, you simply press it (closed position when pressed) and allow the current to operate the solenoid.

In the mean time, I would find a good MPEM and simply have it ready in the event the present MPEM fails.

I have exactly the same scenario, and to prove it was not solenoid or start button, I switched port side solenoid connections and HT leads to the starboard engine and coil. This prompted the issue to switch sides and the starboard starter to spin continuously. If you do find a fix for this I would be keen to hear about it.
