Hi Guys,

It's a little slow in here since winter came around, so I figure I would see what you guys are up to.

I know, this is "off topic" but this is the forum I do most of my lurking in.

Anyway... as some of you know... I own a small shop that builds custom motorcycles. So, it would only make since that I would have a few motorcycle projects going on. Also... as some of you know, I'm good with my hands and don't mind a fixer-up'er type project.

So...

at the end of summer, I picked up a used Suzuki DRZ that had a blown trans for $800. It was the on/off road version, but since I was doing a full restoration on it... I decided I didn't need any more dirt bikes, so I converted it to an SM. (Supermoto) At the end of the project, I was into it for $1300. (buying new parts, selling some of the old)

It's a very fun bike, and it brings out the hooligan in me. Riding on sidewalks, popping over curbs, and looking for loading ramps just to jump off of.

Here's a quick overview of the project. Let me know what you think.

Winter Project

Went to the Boat Show and bought a Challenger, then went to the Bike Show and bought a windshield bag for the Suzi Boulevard, now I'm just anticipating clean roads, and flat warm water

Great thread Tony!...

Great thread Tony. I did a lot of my first learning experiences in 2 and 4 stroke motor cycle engines. I had a 2 stroker Suzuki that was a powerhouse. It was a dirt bike. I also had a Honday 100 and CB175. Back then, we didn't really have dirt bikes. We made them dirt by removing lights and blinkers, putting on knobby tires and taking them into the woods to race trails.

I'm curious as to those parts you said you found in the engine. I can't see them well because of the color and background. Wondering if they are part of the clutch pieces.

I do a lot of spray painting when I do rebuilds and builds. I don't know what you use but I have found an awesome electrical spray system that using an electrical air motor and cup that is drivin by like a huge hair dryer. It works dynamite. I use 235 for priming then usually cover with a polyurethane.

Anyway, bike looks great! Your obviously someone who pays extreme attention to detail............

OK… I agree about the flat water… and being too cold… but the bike… just put on warmer cloths, and give the bike a good washing when you get home. It got to 39 degrees yesterday, and I took a ride. This is after it got a bath to get the salt off.

Snipe…

The busted parts were from the 3rd gear shift dog. The gear shattered, and in turn, ate the oil pump, beat up the crankshaft, cracked the bottom of the cylinder and needless to say… the entire gear cluster was toast.

Here’s a pic of the gear set. You can see the broken dog, and the edges of the gear are missing.

I’ve enjoyed dirt bikes since I was 8 years old… and when you have as much seat time on them as I do… it’s hard to get away from them. (and now I’m getting my little girl riding) I’m 38, and I still like riding around on my dirt-street conversions, more than I like my “Real” street bikes. Here’s the “Toy box” right now. The boat, 5 bikes, R/C airplanes and cars, and misc junk. (sorry for the late night phone pic) Also, the mandatory pic of my little girl with her dirtbike. (and trying to steel one of mine)

Snipe… I use epoxy paint in the shop… but can you give me specs, or who made the paint system you are talking about. I’d like to look into it.

AND...

so this doesn't just turn into a motorcycle thread... My little girl likes the boat too. :hurray:

Nice.

I've never used the stuff myself... but I've set it up an a bunch of bikes for customers.

On my own projects... I just use boost. It's a little more work to tune... but you don't have to worry about running out of juice.

I was looking at the dynograph, and the TQ could have been a glitch... but I'd be more inclined to think your drive tires slipped a little. On a dynojet... the graph is smoothed by the computer, so it doesn't always show a dip in torque if it's for just a split second... but in turn, when you get traction again... it will spike. (just thinking out loud)

Here is a pic of my last car project. It was a twin cam b16 engine in a DelSol. The car was only 1900 Lbs, and after I was done... I made 307 WHP on a Mustang dyno. (i'll look for the print out) The B16 was running 11.4 Lbs of boost, and had a red line of 8200 RPM's. My best run was 12.8 s @ 121 mph. OK... and before you call BS on me... I only ran street tires, and couldn't get traction until 3rd gear. My 60' was 2.6s.

BTW... I always liked the sleeper thing. So... no "Fast an the furious" crap... and it was quiet. (3" exhaust, with a good flowing muffler)

I bet that thing was a blast to drive!

I would prefer a big 6-71 blower, and hopefully, will do it someday. But after I did the dyno run and posted a video of it, my brother got this wild idea to get me this nitrous kit for Christmas. So, nitrous it is.....:reddevil:

It was a good time. Even the wife liked it when I would jump on the throttle while going down the highway. it would do the 60 - 100 thing in just a few seconds, and squish you back in the seat. BUT... since it was a 2 seat car... once my kid showed up, it sat around... so I sold it.

Oh... and please don't think I was bashing on the NO2. I've wanted to play with it on a personal project... I just never have. (yet)

I was looking around for the Dynograph, but I couldn't find it. (I'll keep looking) But I did find a pic of the dash. This was a factory "VTEC" Delsol (only 4000 came to the USA over 3.5 years. 1994 ~ 1996.5) and the B16 engine was hot to begin with. The factory spec on it was 175 HP. But there's nothing like a factory car that can rev like a motorcycle. (look at the factory redline) THey made the delsol for more years, but the "S" had a 90hp motor, and the "Si" had 120HP.

The only reason I did an import project was because the car was one of those "Barn find" vehicles. It only had 32,000 mi and hadn't been registered since 97. So some one drove it for 2~3 years, and parked it. It was in near new condition when I go it.

Now I just got a new 15 gallon fuel cell, so I need to finish out my trunk, mount this cell, remove my stock tank, and mount the battery and Nitrous bottle, replumb and rewire everything, and I am set to go...

Jet Skis

Working on getting my 2 of my stand ups sanded, painted and one ski mounted with a bigger engine and 1 other 550 ski tuned and ready for the summer. Hopefully this project won't kill me before me and friends are finished with them.
