What is your tow rig?

Not much but I definitely win the MPG contest... 2013 Jetta TDi 6spd, 55MPG daily and 42MPG towing. Never thought I'd like a VW but it does everything I need!

HI, what is the recommended towing capacity for that car? Just because the car tows it now it may not later after brake and trans problems.
I don't think it's rated to tow very much, with 2 skis/trailer, fuel/oil/extra stuff you are probably at at least 1700 lbs.
don't tell us that the hitch is rated for 2000lbs because it doesn't matter....it's the car capacity that matters.
This subject has been beaten to death in several threads.
Here is another forum discussion about it.

You're right, it's been beat to death so why does everyone insist on bringing it up constantly? It's his car that's getting the wear and tear on it, but unless he's pulling that all the time it's not going to make any difference as far as hurting it goes. Pulling a load is going to put stress on anything, no matter the weight and unless he's pulling a lowboy with a 800-1000 tongue weight it'll handle it fine.

Hitch is rated 2500lbs and the car is rated at 2800.

I'm aware of the wear and tear, my father is a Master mechanic and I paid attention while I spent every school and summer vacation at our family's shop. Hence why I went with a 6speed manual instead of an auto- much less expensive and easier to repair or maintain.

heres my 93 grandwagoneer i have 5 in of lift with some 33s, arb locker, winch, etc all the goodies

Use my wife's CRV. Does the trick. Been thinking of tossing a hitch on my car so I don't need to borrow hers. Just realized she's attempting to back up the trailer. She needs to learn though.

I think it is safe to say, you could loosen the bolts on your winch post and move it as far back as possible. Not only will you lessen the tongue weight and center the weight of the ski on the axle, but it will give you just a few more inches of length when backing it in at the landing.

That's a long trailer, use as much of it as you can.

I could and likely will, but that trailer is also used for a big 3 seater.

Ahh, Then your setup makes complete sense. Good work dual-purposing.

Yup. The lake I was going to that day is a mile from my house on back roads. If I was to take this ski any distance on that trailer I would surely adjust it. Shortly there after we took out the three seater, so it would have been a pain to adjust it then adjust it back in such a short time.

I think I've already posted on this blog, but I rock an 04 TDI Jetta 5spd. It's why I only have a challenger for a boat. I'm already REALLY pushing my luck... I'd get an SUV, but literally wouldn't do anything with it but tow the boat. I'm thinking of getting an offroad suv like a cherokee or something. A 4-runner or the taco would be perfect, but they're too pricey :/ Did Cherokees come w/ a manual tranny? What options do I have to find a 5spd SUV?

Yup Cherokee's came with a manual tranny, they're rare though. Talking the XJ's(boxy ones) not the ZJ's, WJ's, etc. FYI I'm a jeep person, sold my Cherokee almost 2 years ago. :(

Yea, I had my first real Jeep experience when I rented a wrangler out in Phoenix last year. Crossed a mountain range in it, as well as abused it to no end. I was delighted when it acted like nothing happened as soon as all 4 tires met tarmac :) I like the XJ's, esp now that I know they come with manual trannies. I've seen a few for a good price. If I'm going to get an SUV, it's going to HAVE to be off-road worthy, as well as have a good towing capacity. I'd like to use it for more than just towing a boat. It's going to go into my "Toys" category of ownership after all.

Mine was dual purpose. Here she is back in the day with her offroad shoes on. :) I had a different set of wheels and tires for the street.

Finally got the hitch installed on my new tow vehicle. Took the ski for a spin tonight and it seems to pull well though I can feel it back there. I'll need to do a test run to the lake with some freeway time to ensure it's stable and navigates the ramp. Guess the front wheel drive should actually help even if the back wheels are on moss. If it works well it should really save on gas as compared to my 92 Chevy van.

Nice!!! I would love to know what your fuel economy is at 65mph on the hwy with that. I get about 26-28mpg doing 70-75 on hwy with 4ppl, full tanks in both seadoos and all our stuff.
