What has everyone been up to in the off season?

IMG_2954.jpegIMG_2951.jpegMy 2016 Ram 6.4 Hemi started running horribly back in November, I pretty much made a vow 3 years ago to never go to a mechanic again so once my slow season came in December I started in at this. My original thought after looking around online was can and lifters. Once I got onto a Ram forum a fellow recommended checking the coils/springs/resistors for corrosion. Ordered new boots, longer springs and did away with the resistors, I was very optimistic that my problem would be fixed with the amount of corrosion but unfortunately it didn’t. Found a broken exhaust valve spring for cylinder 3 so pretty sure that was the issue but after reading the loads and loads of cases where the needles in the lifter goes bad, creates a flat spot on the lifter and then destroys the cam I’ve decided to take both heads of and change all the lifters and inspect the cam with a borescope. Its been a challenge for me, with not knowing these engines and what exactly to be looking for, but with the help of a good fellow on the Ram forum I’m slowly making my way through it. Wish me luck, I’m probably going to need it.

Other than fixing the Ram, I’m doing a lot of relaxing, keeping wood on the fire. Hooked the old Nintendo Wii up today in the basement and got to playing some guitar hero. I am committed to getting a new floor in our kitchen this winter to before spring

IMG_3197.jpegSo my 2016 Ram 6.4 saga continues. Don’t want to jinx myself but I’m almost ready to start putting it back together. I thought I was ready a week ago but we broke the exhaust manifold shield putting it back in so I ordered new shields, when the shields came in I was out making sure they were the right ones and I noticed broken exhaust manifold bolt so I ordered new exhaust manifold bolts. I had noticed a small scratch between cylinders 4 and 6, performance guy said it would be fine so I had left it since I didn’t want to take manifolds off, since they were off though I decided to take some wet 400 then 800 grit with WD-40 on a piece off glass and sand the decks. Scratch came out with about 20 swipes, took the straight edge and a light to it, straight as an arrow, no light aging through at all. Had 4 broken manifold bolts, one of which was below the mating surface, stressed about it for 3 days and finally worked up the courage to build it up with some weld and got it out. Nice little skill to add. IF ANYONE IS UP TO ANYTHJNG POST IT HERE. ITS FUN TO SEE WHAT PEOPLE ARE UP TO.

Wish I had the garage space to work on cars/trucks, my truck wouldn't fit in my 1-car garage even without all my junk in there. It is good for working on snowmobiles though.

In the fall I noticed that the trailing arm on my '97 Yamaha VMAX 700SX was rotten basically all the way through, so I set about to replacing that. And I figured, while I have it all apart, I would upgrade the suspension a little bit to help my back when the trails are really bumpy. So I went and found a donor sled that was slightly newer and had taller and higher travel suspension, and swapped it onto my 700. The ride is way nicer now and we have had a great snowy winter so far, especially compared to the misery of our past 2 "winters" - if you can even call them that.

Snowmobiles have a lot more moving parts than the skis we discuss here, but at the same time they are a lot easier to work on since you have so much more space to work. When I take a carb off I can actually see the bolts I'm removing vs my skis where its all by feel lol

The 700 post-suspension surgery, gained about 4 inches of travel

Picking up the donor sled to rob it's suspension - it ran great but had no paperwork so I could never make it trail-legal, so I didn't feel too bad about parting it out. Plus it was just a baby 500 - thats no fun!

The rotton trailing arm that started the whole chain of "while I'm in there"

Wow, hard to believe they could get that rusty, maybe it’s seen its share of road riding. Yeah, this winter is shaping up to be pretty decent, well in these times anyways. 25 years ago the season was December to March but after last year I will take it. 👍

Yeah I think it's a combination of road riding, salty water spray when transporting on my open trailer, and just age (this thing is almost 30 years old after all). Especially during transport I think, since for the past few years we were having to trailer 2-3 hours away to find any amount of snow.

Every single bolt that held together the trailing arms and skid fought me coming out. Many simply would not come out and I had to bust out the angle grinder and sawzall. That donor sled came apart much easier and has been very handy for bolts, bushings and little things that would have been hard to find otherwise. Someone bought the 500 engine for his go-kart. That's gonna be one quick go-kart lol

Nice to see you keeping the old girl going. I have an 08 Nytro, 03 MXZ 600ho, 05 MXZ 600, 02 MXZ 500 Fan. I like the old girls. lol

I also have an 02 VMAX 600 (also a triple) that's in much nicer shape than my 700. That one even has electric start and reverse, such luxury. There's nothing quite like the sound of those old triples. A triple winding up to WOT is a good alternative if you've never heard an angel sing before.

I’ve heard that, I’ve never had one. Maybe someday.
