I have owned boats my entire life, maybe 25 or so, I don't know for sure. So I understand what you are saying when it comes to boats but talking about cars, "Would you have bought a Yugo?" Preventative maintenance doesn't include ceramic washers and marginal closed loop cooling systems that run hotter than designed and shorten engine life especially in warmer sea conditions that exist in the southeast and gulf states. I bet this one of the reasons BRP disappeared from the boating market in 2012.

Some humor for those members that are too young to know what a Yugo was: http://content.time.com/time/specials/2007/article/0,28804,1658545_1658533_1658529,00.html

If you really want to know or care for that fact, Seadoo used to test their products in Valkaria, Florida and an inland area in Palm Bay.

My guess he threw a rod through the block. The oil pump stop working, pressure dropped and a rod bearing seized onto the crankshaft causing a piston rod to snap and exit the block.

Thanks racerxx for that information. I didn't know those facts and I do care about facts. It's early in the morning and I already learned something I did not know.

One other thought, in no way am I comparing the Sea-Doo to a Hugo that was manufactured in the 1980's. That would be extremely insulting to all of us who own this machine. Just trying to add a little smile to a bad situation. Now getting ready to take my 180 Challenger out and do a little sea trout fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. And yes, I'm a SEA TOW member.

RCGUY. Lived in Raleigh and flew professionally for the hockey teams there. I flew the blimp in the Arenas. I have been fooling with Micro copters and trying to learn how to fly those guys. Not easy.

Extremely hard to fly choppers. Never can relax. Those counter rotating helis are a snap but that is not really flying. Practice hovering .... once you master hovering then it's time to move on.

Survey Says,

Threw a rod / rcguy
Dropped Valve / pwgsx
Oil Pump / pete63, xintersecty

So far here is the list of guesses. I put user names next to the guess. Any more?

So I got the super charger out last night. Not the root cause. However the inside is really dirty. I am going to do rebuild on that guy. The bolts on the outside are rusted and the inside is dirty. I am going to retrofit my design with a air filter. There is no excuse for not having one.

So when are we going to know and what is the prize. Only joking xintersecty. I like the air filter enhancement idea. Your taking on a big job and the best of luck plus you got more balls than most of us.

If Rotax was junk, I'm sure Scarab wouldn't have decided to put them in their new line. I have an 06, coming up on it's 10th b-day, other than normal stuff / ie supercharger rebuild, annual tune up oil change etc, I have experienced just one, minor issue,(faulty neutral switch) I am older than the average Seadoo demographic,I may treat mine with a tad more respect than some of the younger guys? and I'm meticulous about keeping things right. IMO the Seadoo line was specifically designed to to appeal to younger, "drive it like you stole it" guys, who buy them for the thrash and bash fun of wide open throttle, wake jumping, suicide turns, even something called a sub-move.Many consider them large jet-ski's not boats. Someone once posted sub video, driving full blast (family and gear on board) and slamming his boat into reverse flooding the entire boat with 3 feet of water, and occasionally ripping the reverse bucket off the transom, the post was widely received as fun.... So it follows that Doo buyers who enjoy that kind of fun are obviously going to break a lot of "stuff", doesn't make the stuff they are destroying / breaking junk....

The Rotax must be a good engine. A lot of the 3 wheel motorcycles have Rotax engines. Just saying.....:)

I don't even have a boat :(. I'm here just to read and learn about the Seadoo boats. Someday i might buy a 2011 Speedster (15'), maybe someday :)

One of the major threads of this discussion is buying used boats and watch them die. I know mine got some abuse in Florida from a prior owner. it's amazing what the glove compartment can yield about a prior owner. I only have pulled the super charger and not started on the heads.

Caveat emptor /ˌkævɛɑːt ˈɛmptɔr/ is Latin for "Let the buyer beware. You made a good deal that obvious was not a good deal. What went wrong with the Rotax?

Here is the latest update. I cleaned out the bilge and removed the seats so I can inspect the motor. Alas, I can't find the source of trouble. My goal is to pull the engine this coming week. I check the oil pump up front, nothing. I check the seal around the drive shaft nothing. I felt under the motor for a blown case, nothing.

I drained the coolant and it was clean of oil. So there was no break in the head gasket.

Now it's time to use that coupon and buy that engine lift.

you could pull the head first to see if there is valve damage, but either way the engine has to come out i presume.

getting interesting??

Finally, it's getting interesting. I bought a Northern Tool Engine Lift (web price combined with coupon) around 220 bucks. I had to spend 30 more and some machining to build an extension to get it over the boat. Worked great! Yes, this motor has seen better days.

So here is the update on the oil leak. I don't know. I could not find evidence of a leak unless one of the experts here can point something out to me. I suspect that once I get more stuff off I will see it.

I am going to need an exhaust header. That pot metal break at the mounting flange leaks hot gas and nearly melted my wires.
Also I am having trouble getting it off. I got every bolt pulled except two. I suspect they have broken and just turning inside the header.

Holly Corrosion ...... Love the pics though, cant wait to see more. Are you going to rebuild it or just replace it ?

Good question. A cost of an engine with core ranges between 2300 and 2700. I need to see what shape is my block. If the block is good I may rebuild it depending on parts otherwise it make sense to buy a built engine. To me it will be well worth a complete tear down and reassembly if the block is good. Once torn down, I could get it soda blasted and painted.

Wow guys I bought my boat 3 years ago, I've taken it out quite a lot and I'm grateful "knocking on wood" that I never had an issue. My warranty expires this July so hopefully nothing happens lol...

I also bought a seadoo spark last year and I think I took it out like 25 weekends, even to balboa island never had an issue, knocking on wood again.

So I'm not sure, but i had a seadoo sportster 1995 that always had a problem but it was previous owner error (lack of maintenance, so forth, also that boat was 17 years old dang).

So knocking on wood, I might be looking to upgrade. Now xintersecty I would like to know too what it was..

I took apart more stuff last night. Pictures will follow. I can say what the problem is NOT.
1) It is NOT the oil pump
2) It is NOT a drop valve

I can't confirm throw a rod yet. I just got the PTO housing and the oil pump off last night with some more stuff off. I am beginning to hate the TORX bolts.

What kind of lift yah buying?

I bought a Northern Tool Lift. Cost about 220 with coupons and web price. It's actually pretty good. I did have to modify it by making an 6 foot boom. The pictures above show the extra long boom. It was on the edge of balance and the boom held the weight.
