Can anyone describe the steps for removing and replacing the 2 wire speed sensor on a 2001 Sportster. Appears there is little room to work on the electrical connector on the outside of the hull. Must the entire thru hull be removed from inside the engine compartment? Thanks in advance - first post to the forum!!

Hi and welcome to the SeaDoo forum.

Since you had two identical threads I removed one of them.

The speed sensor wire goes through a watertight connector in the hull of your boat, in order to remove the sensor you will need a delphi pin removal tool to remove connector and let the wires fit through the connector. Or you can just cut the wires and splice the new sensor wires to the old harness, I would solder them and use heat shrink tubing.

Thanks for removing my duplicate. Just like the sensor, I couldn't quite figure out how to... To get the wires to pass through the water tight seal, I assume the nut (acorn shape) on the outside assembly needs to be backed off??

You got it, there's a putty like substance in there, it looks like plumbers putty, so since that what it looked like, and I had some in the garage, that's what I used to re-install.

Thanks so much. I have the sensor out and tested with my mutimeter - no volts! dead! nada! nothing! I appreciate the lead on the terminal tool; that should make getting those terminals out much easier. Thanks for making my first experience on the forum a positive one!!

Try PM'ing minnetonka4me he might have one.

What part of Ohio are you from? Do you ever come to any of the lakes in KY?

We live in Mentor Ohio and have done all our boating over the last decade on Lake Erie out of Fairport Harbor. My daughter has found sailing to be a bit to slow and she has been pestering for a jet ski. Over the holidays, I found the Sporster and thought she might get more play out that. So here I am... I have fond memories growing up in Montana of powerboating on Flathead lake and the chain lakes in the Swan Valley but, got the sailing bug while living in San Diego and have been hooked ever since. Having the jet boat could open up new adventures. We will see.
