My merc will run good for a while then stall out and won’t start help me

Help me my merc 240 will run good for a while then stall out when I slow down to idle and won’t start , and did slam it in to reverse

Since you have a 2002... we need to verify what engine you have. Is the cover on top of the engine small and round? (Just coving the flywheel) Or is it larger, and covers most of the top of the engine?

Also when I manually hold the air intake open it starts up right away

The two valves pretty sure it’s the air intake I’m holding open just a bit

What is the idle speed when it's running good?

There can be a few things to check right away. 1) Fuel pressure. Should be 36 psi. 2) Fresh air. Could be an exhaust leak. (open the deck lid or run the bilge fan)

If I let it sit for a while it will idle good and take off like a bat outta hell but when I come to slow down it will stall out and the idle is very low

Also is it important to run exaust fan while driving or just after driving ?
