Hx 951 Winter Project

Had an hx with factory pipe and other ad-ons. It ripped pretty good until it didn’t. Blew out rod bearing on pto side. I was just going to do a full rebuild on the 720, then I got to thinking and the factory pipe just introduces so much hassle and reliability issues. The fpp setup required premix, race gas and constant dicking with the carbs to make sure I wasn’t melting pistons.

Hopped on Facebook marketplace and saw this

Gears in my head started turning so I picked it up fairly cheap, after selling some unneeded parts on eBay, it ended up being free.

99 gsx had carbed 951 in it, this particular 951 was toasted

ordered a complete rebuild kit, so I should have a brand new engine after all said and done. 281a0931ea675cc402254f9d4fdf1a8b.jpg

Got some 787-951 conversion plates from critracer which look amazing.

Here’s the 951 mocked up in hx hull.

One problem with the 951 is the exhaust pipe is routed on the opposite side of every other seadoo 2 stroke, I got the idea for this from ktm640duke on pwctoday.

Will post updates when I have enough money to order parts I need. My garage will be looking like this for the foreseeable future b42c6b71f4b11606537e1197c2258be0.jpg

The goal of the build is to have the 951 completely stock thus having big power in an hx with the least amount of unnecessary maintenance.

Finally got the cylinders back from the machine shop, and was able to finish assembling the engine

I had to get a new stator and flywheel because old one was rusty and didn’t pass ohm test. Had to rebuild the starter aswell.

Just put the motor back in the ski today after buying the correct length bolts for the engine mounts

I only have the carbs on there to test fitment in the hull

I have a slight problem when it comes to the exhaust tho.

In the above picture the exhaust hits on the left side right next to the cylinders

The exhaust hits where the yellow mark is, only on the bottom. I think I’m going to have to chop the pipe on the bottom and weld it to get it to clear. I Really don’t want to grind into the hull. Other than the pipe issue I’m waiting on an alignment tool in the mail, to be able to drill and tap the front engine mount holes. Then I want to replace the rear carrier bearing. After that just need to install drive shafts and electronics.

Little update here, got the carb rebuild kits in so the carbs are bolted onto the motor hopefully permanently.

The exhaust pipe hitting the hull problem has been solved but may hinder performance a bit, but we will see

I really didn’t want to but I did have to cut into the hull a little bit to put the rubber coupler onto the tail cone. I fiberglassed over where I cut the hull to hopefully retain some strength and keep the inner foam dry

Waiting on a 98 xp Ltd pto flywheel to come in the mail so I can use my coupler midshaft instead of the splined one. Also waiting on fuel lines and new carrier bearing.

Very close to being done!

Got the exhaust and brackets all tightened up on the work bench

Relocated the fuel strainer.

Dropped the motor in for hopefully the last time, hooked all the electronics up for the first start.

It started right up, so I weeded the wiring harness to get rid of unnecessary things, and mounted everything up.

I had to get new spark plug wires because old ones didn’t reach.

Im retaining the fuel level sensor, oil sensor, oil injection, auto bilge, and info gauge, which will feel luxurious on an hx.

Got the coupler pto installed on the engine, also installed the driveshaft/pump assembly.

I bought a stock airbox for the 951 and was a little too ambitious thinking it would fit. It was not even close to fitting so I’m being forced to use pro k flame arrestors, I’m going to be putting k&n dry charger prefilters so I hopefully don’t have too much water ingestion.

Inside of the rear hatch, don’t pay attention to the all the dust from grinding the fiberglass a few weeks ago.

I just need to button up the pisser hoses on the pipe then she will be ready to hit the water but tragically, Ohio is dumping snow right now and temp has been in the teens for the last couple weeks. So no water test any time soon

The only warmth I’ve had was this crappy 20 dollar heater lmao

Awesome build!! I hear you on the cold I'm in Michigan haven't touched anything in the garage LOL.

I need those engine mounting plates. Any way you can make templates out of cardboard and ship them to me? I would pay of course. Thanks

Message critracer and see if he can help you out, he is the one that made the mount plates for me.
