After I got it in... it started to storm again. Also... I have at least 2 days worth of work at my shop right now. SO... I'll either take a short day on Tuesday... or I'll get it out on Wed.

I'd like to get half a tank burnt this week... and take the fam out this coming weekend.

Wow great Job!! You deserve a break, congrats plus I can't wait!

Well.......... around 2 O'clock... the rain let up... so I got out there... and installed that thing!!! It didn't start right away, but after a little digging... I found the feed hose was leaking a little, so it was sucking air. After I cut the hose clean, and got it clamped tight... she fired right up.

I have a few Odd's-N-End's to take care of... but as soon as I can get a little free time... I'll give her a water test.

WOW! again great job!:patriot: perseverance and getting it done!
but you sent that rain my way! wow the sky was black!:p

Well............. This will probably be one of the last entries in this thread. The very last will be a water test report.

Anyway... A buddy of mine had stopped by while I was doing the install, and he sent a few pics... and I thought I would post them.

Well guys........................ I couldn't take it any longer, and I played hooky from work. BUT... I'm glad to say... the boat runs GREAT !!!!!!!!

I got over to the local (small) lake around noon, and I was there until about 3:30. I managed to burn half a tank of fuel, and there wasn't a single issue.

When I was first unloading, I talked with a gentleman who was unloading a pontoon boat... and I asked him, that if he saw me waving him down... I may be in distress. While talking with him... I explained that the engine was a rebuild/resurrection, and who knows if my welds were going to hold.

After getting into the water... I idled around for a while... just to make sure the water was flowing, and to warm it up. Then... the throttle went to full! That big boat accelerated WAY better than I expected. It was up on plane in just a couple seconds, and the needle was touching the 50 mph mark. I only held it open for 20 or 30 seconds, but she held together. After that I cruised around at about 35 mph, and that big 2-stroke runs incredibly smooth, and it's not to loud.

There were a few times I stopped to check over things... and each time, the engine would restart with just a touch of the key. Oh... and dispite its size... Its still a jet-boat... and will slide a turn as good as my old Sportster. (lol)

It was hot... but a very happy day for the Islandia project. So.... here's some pics. (the first is a vid)

Glad to hear it all worked. Great job getting it done. Now you can enjoy the end of summer. I actually made it out Monday and have a couple days coming up I plan on going out.

Great job Tony, now what I think you should do is invite 50 or so of your best buddies on the forum down for the inaugural ride. When do you want us there? Should I bring my ski's or do you have an extra pair?

Lou

Great Job Tony! It`s a great feeling isn`t it! Lot`s of luck with the boat and enjoy the rest of the season!:thumbsup::cool:

Wow!!!! so freaking happy for you! that's wonderful, plus now its really hot so at least you got it working. Werent you afraid of going 50, its like a new engine and all?

Amazing work! Good for you. Thank you fo sharing this job with us. I can only hope you can share the photos of the kids out there this weekend! I can only hope you grow to love this merc motor as much as many of us.

I think you did fine opening it up. Every two stroke I have had the fortune to break in, I was told by manufacturers to run at all RPM's just don't hold any steady RPM's during break in. Of course in your case, you have other things to worry about, but obviously it worked great!

Every piece of this project was top-notch! Congrats!

Now thats gotta feel good!!!

Someone on the forums gettin' lucky tonight!! Btw holy crap that seems like alot of hydroturf!!

Good... I know you've said in the past that you dont' get out too many times during the year. Also... you had a new kid too... right? Have you taken the little one out?

You guys are welcome any time. And Lou... you can borrow one of my skis if you come out.

Congratulations on your maiden voyage! Sounds like it exceeded your expectations. Great job!

I wasn't sure what to expect with the Merc... but it seems like a nice engine. Also. since I did a lot of extra stuff, on an unfamiliar engine... I was a little worried. (like my welds coming apart)

Nope. I'm from the school of "Break'em in Hard". When I raced SCORE off road... I would run my WR250 full throttle at a race, with a fresh top end all the time. Actually, full throttle, and a long decell will help seat the rings faster. The key is to not hold it at a given RPM for too long. (and don't let it get hot)

Thanks for the praise. I try the best I can. I'm not perfect, and not everything I touch works perfect the first time. But... with this project, and took my time, and when I did something I didn't like... I started over.

Btw holy crap that seems like a lot of hydroturf!!

Yes... it was. It came in 2 big boxes, and full retail on the kit is $450.

I have been following your progress and congrats on the awesome job you did. I am clueless on how to complete a rebuild like what you did, but I am totally impressed with your skills.
I look forward to seeing that boat out on the waters around the Burg. Let me know if there is ever a Pittsburgh area Seadooforum meet and greet.

Congrats Tony! Great job.

Lou, You and Sis can use our spare bedroom when you come up to Pittsburgh. I'll give you the family rate :)

Tony, that is a fantastic looking boat. Great job on all the "reworking". The kids/wife will want to ride in it on Thursday for sure.

Congratulations! And like a lot of the others have said, thanks for sharing your project. The boat looks great and sounds like it runs the same. Hope you and the family get the opportunity to break it in right with a full day out on the lake this weekend.

Us Merc owners are fortunate that you've changed your view of the Merc powered SD boats. I know I had a lot of the same feelings you did when I first got my Merc on the water, ton of power, on plane now, still a jet boat! I think it's a great powertrain, this is my second season with it and I love it so far.

Great job, you really accomplished a lot in a pretty short time...enjoy!

Awesome, I'm so glad its worked out for you!
We too love our Merc=lots of torque; I'm gonna pull the engine this winter and replace the worm gear for a few more seasons of happy boating.

Thanks for sharing Doc, I appreciate everything you helped me with. That lake looks pretty calm and very nice by the way.
