5/16 fuel line

I'm redoing all the lines in my speedster. For the 5/16 lines they are the thick black ones. I went to a rec supply store and they only had 5/16 blue line. It's thinner walled but seems quite rigid.

They said they run it in sleds with no problems.

Not sure if I should use the stuff they sell or stick with the old black ones. Since I'm rebuilding the carbs, fuel pumps I thought I would get a complete fresh start with new lines all around.

Thoughts?

Also, those pinch type clamps and for some worm drive clamps, they really don't hold the line on very well. I was able to just twist and pull the lines off with not much effort so in thinking that, wondering if a guy could get away with zip ties?

So, there is an IMPORTANT detail you should be aware of. Inboard fuel line is supposed to be rated A1. That means you have some minutes if there is a fire in the engine compartment before the line melts and the fuel catches fire and the boat goes kaput. Other fuel line, not so much. There is a legal requirement (though you are unlikely to ever be inspected for this), but also a safety requirement for this reason. Outboard lines a re rated B-1, which means they melt at a different rate (faster) but the fire is out in the open, so less big a deal. No idea what this transparent line is rated for.

I would humbly suggest purchasing a box of the A1 line you want. get you 25/50 feet and you will be done with your need forever.

If that thin line rubs somewhere in a sled and breaks, the fumes are out in the open, but in an enclosed inboard engine space they accumulate and are much more likely to cause a fire or explosion.

stainless worm is the kind I use. be sure it's ALL stainless, screw included. once it's well tightened it won't even rotate if the line size is right for the fitting.

Unless your filter is full of fuel line delaminating on the inner walls don't worry about replacing it, Transport Canada has different requirements from the USCG's A1 hose anyway and you'll spend a small fortune on new line you really probably don't need.

Just pressure check all your lines and connections, you need to do that anytime the fuel system is serviced even if new lines are being installed for safety and reliable operation.

Well,, that is not entirely correct. The line will start to build up on the inner walls long before parts of it breaking away and plugging the various filters, jets and carb ports.

As a result, the proper amount of fuel is not reaching the cylinders. This also creates a Lean condition which will harm the pistons.

There's absolutely no reason to encourage someone, especially a Canadian resident with what fuel line and parts prices are up there to replace the fuel lines in a Sport Boat on a whim without identifying a material defect.

You have absolutely no hands on experience or knowledge in these matters and it really shows in posts like this, BRP used a high quality compliant hose for both US and TCA regs in the boats and I've been into a thousand or more of them easily.

Aside from a handful of very unusual failures tied directly to batches of gasoline that lab tested off the scale for ethanol content that destroyed the engines right along with everything else not one time has there been an issue with "build up" or "running lean" from BRP boat hose linings. You're parroting internet fallacies that get spread around like a common cold, people really do believe and tend to repeat those things they read no matter if the author has zero hands on experience servicing them.

Removing an inch of line after the selector immediately before the filter and opening it up will clearly show any defects in it, 99% of the line originally installed will be good as new in BRP sport boats you aren't dealing with the junk hose that was used in the ski's.

I will take the hit on this one. I didn't see that it was a boat. The boats NEVER used Grey Tempo lines. You do NOT need to service your lines unless there is a specific reason in your case.

That said, I do stand by by comment if it was a ski. Unless you are the original owner you will never know who ran what fuel. Plus, the GT lines failed LONG before ethanol was an issue. The ethanol is the newest common delimiter is all.

You are incorrect in that I don't have "hands on experience". For 12 years I cut boats apart for the U.S. Coast Guard and SEVERAL boat manufactures. This was to ensure regs were being followed as well as look for unknown issues.

I am perfectly fine with being corrected. I am human and I do make mistake. As in this case. I reads the posts but missed that it was a boat.

For the record, I would NEVER make it personal in the event I needed to correct or question you. All I ask is the same respect.

Deal?

It wasn't personal, nor meant to be an insult or a dig and I could care less how much or how many times you or anybody else tore something apart for show and tell there's a reason the USCG farms out all the real service work to competent mechanics on their aircraft and boats lives matter when they splash or have to be in the air as you well know.

There used to be quite a few hands on industry professionals that would contribute here at times and really help the DIY crowd make repairs with positive lasting results and not encourage spending time or money on the job that didn't contribute to that end.

I don't see them around here much anymore if ever, I'll leave it to you and try to figure out why that is I'm done wasting my time on you and should have never bothered responding in the first place.

Apologies for the unnecessary thread Hi-Jack OP, best of luck with your boat and the project.

I don't want to drag this out and take away from the intent behind the post.

I admitted I made an error in replying as I simply missed it was a boat. What more can I say or do than that.

Have a good day,,,

It's all good. I'm glad to have the resources to deal with the issues we have. No one steered me in the wrong direction and some was food for thought. I'm going to leave the original black lines because they actually don't look bad. I will however be changing out the grey ones!

I think we need to take a step back here and chill................I'm not really digging the tone of the replies from anyone.

We're all here to help guy preserve these toys, no one is perfect. We ALL miss things now and again and all of US (meaning every member on SDF) try and get guys solid info. Let's try and be a bit more tactful in our replies and corrections of members.

It would be very helpful for all of us if you would update your Watercraft profile with your year Speedster.

No denying that! I've often dreamed of the newer challenger 180s but keep looking at my 16 year old boat that still looks brand new - yeah I'll keep her.

did you get her all fingered out looks like we are in for a nice week/weekend could be the last few days of 30ish weather
"why do I live here:facepalm:"

Haha. I here ya! Where did the summer go?

Unfortunately it doesn't look promising. I sent my carbs out to be redone but I haven't got them back yet. I'll be putting her back in the water even if it's cold out once more for sure to test the carbs out and stuff.
