I have a 2001 Seadoo GTX DI 951. The battery was going bad so I decided to replace it. I have replaced this battery a million times with no issues. Here is the problem. I went t Walmart and bought the CORRECT battery as it was listed on the box. The battery looks exactly the same as my old battery when I removed it from the box. The problem is that the battery in the box was not the battery listed on the box. When you put the batteries together side by side, one battery is about a 1/4 smaller. The issue is the the terminals on this new battery were reversed. The negative and positive were on different sides. Unknowingly, we installed the battery and it blew the 30 amp fuse inside the box that houses the starter solenoid and the ignition coils. I replaced the fuse and the seadoo fired up and ran like a top for about 30 seconds and then started to misfire. We drove the jet ski about 30 feet and it would stall out. It kept doing this all the way back to the dock. Again, when you start the jet ski ski it runs great for about 20 to 30 seconds and starts to misfire. Is it possible that one of the ignition coils got screwed up when the battery was reversed? I'm guessing that when the coil starts to warm up it misfires. Before this battery screwup, the jet ski rode great with no issues. Does anyone have any experience with this because no body wants to work on these older DI's.

Yes, a coil will be cool and fire, but when it warms up under load it will misfire, what do the plugs look like?,,,Perhaps, you may have damaged the ECU, hopefully not,

On a side note, every battery I buy I put a piece of masking tape above the positive terminal and mark a BIG RED PLUS sign. :D BIG... LOL

Again, the engine ran great before the battery incidence, but I will replace the plugs just to make sure. That's a smart idea about labeling the terminals to make it idiot proof.

The rectifier converts AC voltage to DC to Charge the battery it also regulates that voltage. If the rectifer is bad it can cause the engines to run bad. It is a pretty cheap part aftermarket $30. Your reverse polarity may have caused a problem with it.

30 seconds is the kinda number I'd expect to see for the system to begin charging the battery. Measure battery voltage with the engine running will tell you if the rectifer is good or bad but you can still have a problem with it that won't show up. If you unplug it, your battery will not charge. That is all. I don't know where it is located on the GTX. On my RX DIit was up front near the Computer but on the back side.

This is picture of the rectifer on the GTX RFI. Good Luck !!GTX RFI Rear Elect Rectifier.jpg

The rectifier on my 2000 GTX DI is up front. I think they moved around in different years, so check the parts diagram for your 01.

I became an accidental carb 951 pseudo expert... had 5 or 6 of them in my garage at one point. Fixed more than I can recall. I've moved on to my pseudo Mercruiser 350 degrees now though. Water is the same, but I'm less sore after rides now.
