Hi, I am a new owner of a 1998 speedster, bought it from a friend, put about 25 hours on it so far, man let me tell you what a freaking blast, I don't think I will ever own a prop driven boat again , I love this boat. My problem is the right engine drive shaft stripped the splines at the engine,, the drive shaft part is stripped ,,, already took it apart , my question is should I replace the pto flywheel also . It feels fine but when I put the good side of the shaft in the pto flywheel ( the end that was connected to the impeller ) just to see how it feels. It has a little play in it when moving it slightly back and fourth,, and also how do I lock the motor in order to unscrew the pto flywheel from the crank ,,????Looked at wear rings they need replacing,, also ,, if I take the impeller off should I just go ahead and rebuild the jet pump ,, also looking at replacing impellers, solas 15/23. I just want to freshen it up since I got it apart. But it's getting expensive , Any suggestions.

Yes... If you want to a have a trouble free summer... replace it. The PTO is what normally gives out, since it's cast aluminum, and the D-shaft is stainless steel. I'm sure it's warn... and I would think it wont last much longer.

This just happened to me today. The rubber boot exploded and the splines of the shaft or maybe the PTO or both are now stripped. Not sure which until I take it apart. Do you know which schematic in the parts section shows the PTO part number? I can't seem to find it. I see the PTO in the "drive system" schematic, but it doesn't list a part number. It has to be located in another section, but I can't find it.

Also, I found rubber boots for the PTO, but it describes it as the following: FOR SEA DOO FOR ALL 720/800/951 89-05' 003-100/272000001.

I have the 787 engines and it's a 98 Speedster, but the part number is correct. It always worries me when it doesn't list my engine specifically. Does anyone think this would not fit for my boat?

I don't think that's right. The picture doesn't look like the same part. The part I need is at the end of the engine where the drive shaft enters. It's the part with splines.

The 800 and your 787 are the same thing. Just some choose to round up.

Hey go to sea-doo.net. Then go to tech specs ,, in there you select 1998 then speedster,, and download the shop manual for free,, get the supplement manual that says speedster. It tells u everything. If you have a mac computer move it to iBooks library. It's awesome. I also found the pto clutch flywheel at speed supplies.com. select sea doo parts then 1998 then speedster then Go to crankshaft pistons section and it's number 23-24 on the schematic it doesn't look like the picture real good but that's it ,,It's like 135.00. They also have the drive shaft and all the seals . Hope this helps. Mike

Thanks Mike. I'll call and make sure they actually have the part available. I've purchased on sites like that before using the parts diagrams and the part was discontinued even though it had listed a price. They had to refund me my money and it took 2-3 weeks to get it. I wasn't very happy about that because the money was taken from me immediately. It was through paypal and they received an earful from this unhappy customer.

Do you believe it's best to use OEM or would aftermarket work for the drive shaft?

What is causing these failures of the splines at the PTO? Is there any way to prevent it or keep it from happening again once replaced?

What's a good way to remove the pto flywheel ...?

I have the same boat, I took the spark plug out and turned the the pto so the piston was on the up stroke. When its half way up I stuffed the cyl with rope to lock the motor up. Then I just put a large pipe wrench on the pto and pulled till it broke free. Also check the alignment of the motor with the pump. I got my parts used on ebay.

I got the pump off and now the shaft will not come out of the PTO. The shaft slips in and out slightly, but will not come out. I've also taken out the zerk fitting just in case that had anything to do with it. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get the drive shaft out? I've hammered it, but nothing. It's dark out now and really would like to get this thing out so that I know what I need to order tomorrow morning. Help!!

I also had that problem, I put vise grips on the shaft and hit it with a hammer. I would get the d shaft and the pto, both were striped out.

Make sure you remove the "c" clip which is underneath the metal collar, u have to. Slide the metal collar back against the accordion boot looking seal, the "c" clip is underneath that metal collar. Mike

Everything on the drive shaft has been removed and moves freely, however, I still can't get the drive shaft out of the flywheel. Anyone have any suggestions? This is becoming a very daunting task. I suppose the last resort will be cutting with a torch, but don't know how safe that will be. We've tried putting vice grips and pipe wrenches on the drive shaft and hitting with a hammer, but no luck. There's really not enough room to get a good swing with the hammer. We even put a pipe wrench on the drive shaft and one on the pto and tried turning them in opposite directions, but nothing. Need help please.

If I try starting the engine, the flywheel spins, but the shaft doesn't when it's in the water so you'd think it would just come right out, but it won't. Is there anything else locking it in the flywheel?

Just go ahead and try to remove the flywheel from engine with shaft still attached , or cut the drive shaft off at the flywheel then remove both. Die grinder with a cutoff wheel will do it but remember the gas tank is in there too. Definitely let us know what u do to remove it. ,

Can't get this thing out. Taking to a Seadoo mechanic tomorrow. Hopefully he'll figure it out. Thanks to all that helped. It's appreciated.

We were able to remove it with a torch. I would not suggest doing it this way as you're putting a lot of heat near your engine. Everything is back together and works fine. Think I need to get a new carbon ring though. Yesterday on the water I saw water slowly dripping from the seal. After a while it stopped, but you can never be too safe.

Thanks for your help!
