I dont know specifically what was so bad about the internals of the white motor; all I know is it is completely different than the grey. If I remember correctly the only thing transferable is the crank...but dont quote me on that.

The problem is that they are different and no one wants parts that dont work with grey motors. If you send one to SBT, you will get back 97.5 motor (prob painted grey)

The carbs are a lost cause....its not the jetting, but the diaphrams are turned in the wrong direction and are affected by gforces. On the 98 and up they turned them around 180 degrees.

So...as I explained before you got into this machine, there are alot of nightmares. Fortunately the rest of it is in sweet shape and you basically paid $100 for the machine. It can only get better from here...lol

I'll PM you about parts pricing.

For the deal you got and what you have to spend to fix it, Get new/rebuild.
I've gotten engines online and didn't do so bad.
Minnetonka or his brother can get you one and are very reliable sources for this kind of purchase.

To Minnetonka if the 97.5 grey motor are problems, can't he swap it with a white 98 and not need anything else??
Cost would be about the same??

edit: NV post#44. looks like you need some updating :). But probably well worth it.

thats what im wondering , trying to figure out if this thing is worth putting a bunch of money into , if it wasnt in such good shape i would part it out. the white motor is the problem not the grey one , the grey engine is the one to get instead of the white,.

I'm just thinking out loud here and I'm trying to put myself in your place to decide what to do. You've basically got two options.

1. Get out now, you could get your money back and probably come out a few dollars ahead by either selling the ski as is or parting it out. If you part it out you could come out more ahead, but of course you've got the hassle of selling all the parts, and selling the hull, and trailer. If you're not going to keep the ski this would be the way to go, this makes the most sense monetarily, because if replace the motor you've still got a 14year old ski, and after putting all the money and time into fixing it you're probably looking at breaking even, at best.

2. If you really want to keep the ski, put a rebuilt grey engine, update the carbs, etc., you're going to have a like new 14 year old ski, but it would be one awesome ski, something that should be trouble free for a long time. If you go with this option I would only do it if you plan on keeping it and enjoying the ski. The drawback is you're going to have more time and money in the ski than is worth.

On a personal note, and this is again me thinking out loud. I am not a professional by any means, I'm just a shade tree mechanic. If it were me I would probably go with option 1, because I personally would not be comfortable with the 951 motor, I pretty much have experience with the 720 and 787 motors. If the ski had a 787 I would go for fixing it. Again this is just my opinion for performance and reliability the 717 was the best engine SeaDoo ever put into a ski followed by a close second would be the 787.

Opinions are like a-holes, everybody's got one, this is mine. Good luck in your decision.

Lou

lou thanks for the ideas , guess im going to have to crunch some numbers before i make my decision , it would be a pretty mean ski all set up with a grey 951 , the hull and everything else is like a time piece . if i do fix it , i want to make it a rocket by putting a few extra bucks in it to go 65mph. but dont know if its worth it. Anyone need 951 gsx parts? lol

Like lou says very one will have .02 cents and here is mine.

That ski working w/o knowing if anything has been upgraded is 3k or more.
What will it take to have everything that needs replacing be VS cost to buy another one??

In the end its up to you . If you plan on keeping for a while, fix it. You'll still be ahead if you sell it later.
That is if you don't have to pay a shop to do the work you can do.

Did you ever see link I posted up on the 951 rebuild??

You have the best resource here and a good parts supplier with Minnetonka or his brother

yes i did check it out thank you for the link. i have rebuilt 1 other 951 top end to have the crank let go 10 mins into the break in run , it wasnt to fun. this time crank is going to be replaced if its iffy at all.

I would rebuild. Make it stronger, faster and more reliable like the 6 million $$ man :)
