found a 1998 gsx limited with 88 hours and a nice trailer for sale for
$650 , does not run and has been in storage since 2004, wondering if sitting for that long in a garage will cause to many issues , ski looks very clean. even has a title. says it will turn over but wont start. what do you guys think?

I bought a 96GSX a couple of months ago, with 107hrs. for $ 850.00. The ski I bought was a diamond in the rough, cosmetically it didn't look so good but mechanically excellent, it's running at 64mph (on GPS), a real quick ski. All I did mechanically was change the fuel lines, filters, carb. filters, change pump oil, do a little re-wiring, the picture in the avatar is the ski. The compression is 160 and 156 psi.

Anyway for $ 850.00 I thought I stole it, yours sounds like even a better deal. Being in storage that long you'll probably need to rebuild the carbs., change the fuel lines etc., plan on spending 200-300 minimum, but it's still a good deal. Also check the compression before you buy it, with that few hours should be around 150psi. You've got skis so you know the drill.

Be sure to check if the ski was stored properly, check for bulging cylinder jugs, water leaks.

I'd be all over that! Bring a boost pack and a compression gauge. Don't use your running truck to boost it or you run the risk of cooking the MPEM. If it turns over you can do a compression test and at least know where your top end is at. Let us know if you go and bring your camera and post pics!!!

heading up there sunday , hopefully it works out i need a winter project, will post picks if i buy it , planning on storing my 2011 on the single trailer in the garage since it wont fit in the doors.

The 97.5 is a prototype model; If it still has a white motor and carbs that have the diaphragm pointing to the front; run. ;)

Well...at $650 if it had a nice trailer its still a decent deal, but...

That white setup was prone to blowing up; Seadoo tried to deal with the gforces by venting the carbs...but it didnt work. the next year they turned the carbs around. The motor was also not the best design, and pretty much every part was changed for the 98 year.

The only thing that was awesome was the white pipe...supposedly made more HP and RPM than a black one.

If it has a grey motor and the carbs are the newer style...then its a steal. I def. like the hull colors...way better than the 98.

Thank you very much for the information . He stated it was the 5625 model . I didn't ask or see pictures of the motor . If it is the white motor would it be worth buying ? It is the grey color ski . Did they make the grey ski 's with the grey motor?

lol i bet it is sweet... i rode a RFI GSX that was 110 HP i think, very nice, smooth, and a FUN ski... but I like the 951 engine, and the black/red of the '99...

the 99 GSX is actually 30 lbs lighter than my XP! but it doesn't corner the same...but the GSX can actually seat 2 people for a ride (unlike the XP)...

anyway, I'm not a fan of the 98 due to the white engine... i'd stick with the grey engine.

Sabr - Doesn't nick have the ski you want? A 99GSX L or is there a difference in the GSX L and the Limited

Yes....the L was for limited which designated the 951 carb motor. Long ways to travel though and with all the blood sweat and tears I put into it you can guess that I'm getting top dollar for it. You also get a much better chance at not buying a POS from some other guy who knows nothing about his except "it ran great the last time I had it out".

Here she is...except I added a red gauge deflector and lettered seat off a 97.5 which was an awesome addition. shes also got a prop and intake grate on it.

what are the issues with the white 951? is it even worth it or should i call the guy telling him im not coming to see it.

Its worth a call to find out if he has any documented history on the motor...as I said many got replaced by the dealer under warranty.

Its a great machine if the engine and carbs have been replaced...I have a couple clean sets of the good carbs for $175.

are they the carbs from the grey 951? and would they fit the white 951? motor is white , owner said never had anything done to ski ever , always worked fine.

Yes. You would also need the choke cable I think...I would have to look again to see what side its on.

The 97.5 throttle hooks up in the back, where the others hook in the front so you'll have some slack there.

Do some searches...Bill Oneil at pwctoday.com has written MANY threads on the reasons stay away from the 97.5...

To the OP...

You asked me in another thread about my ski, and it has been running great for me with the white motor.

However, had I known more about the white motor 951 prior to buying, I probably would have been scared off from buying it based on what others say about it.

Bill O'Neil, whom Minnetonka mentioned is a very reliable source in the industry, but he was into racing these skis...modifying them, putting on aftermarket flame arrestors, etc...basically trying to get the utmost performance out of the machines. This will stress any engine more towards its limits.

With that in mind though, there obviously was some issue with the white motor and it's design. It was the first 951 produced and they quickly made design changes to it, re-releasing the 98 GSX Limiteds with a whole new engine and color scheme. I was not in the scene in the late 90's when these things were sold new, so I am unaware of the failure rate of the engines.

Look at the recent crisis with Toyota a few years back and their "sticking" gas pedals. Now there were millions (<- guess, but I am sure a big number nonetheless) of Toyotas'/Lexus' in the states, but we only heard of a few cases of pedals sticking. Most people, however wished they never bought a toyota or thought to stay away from them all. There was a recall and everyone got their "white engine" replaced.

So, you have to make the decision about the risks involved with the ski you are looking at. I think for $650 with a trailer...you are looking at a great deal.

^^ great response....and thanks for the rep. I could not believe how she shined when I got done polishing her up.

Congratulations, I think you got a great deal. I'm going to warn you about something, I noticed that the ski has an Ohio registration, unless you live in Ohio (I have no idea where Lake Norman is), it's a bitch to get it transferred out of state. I just transferred one from OH to KY and had a hard time, and I have friends in the motor vehicle department. You'll need the signed, notarized title, and also a bill of sale. Good luck.

Great looking ski and great price, even if you put another 1K into it. But I doubt if you'll have to.

I think at one time he said LN is in North Carolina.
