when i was looking, there seemed to be a ton of 96xp's out there.... i just wanted the cleanest, best quality for the best price x4 hull 787 i could find. the 99spx and 96xp were my top choices.... price was more important then the year for me..... 99's always seem to go for much more money...

Same here! Everytime I see an 98 SPX though I think "hmmm what if I had that with no graphics, a jettrim seat, umi, carbon fiber hood, and a factory pipe." Then reality hits and I go love on my 96 XP

'97s didn't have accelerator pumps on carbs Idoseadoo, and in my opinion that is a good thing. The carbs are the exact same as '96 models.

There are not many "enthusiast" around my area and most have no idea what a X4 is. Hell if it ain't 800lbs with a supercharger its not cool! I think thats why most X4's don't get bought up around here. Lets face it a X4 is a kick in the pants type ski which is suited for an "enthusiast". It rides like ass, but will fly! All about business!!! People don't realize what a 450ish lb hull with a hot 110 hp 2 stroke will do vs a 850 lb hull with a 215 hp or 260 hp 4 stroke. I always get a kick out of people who ride mine that have never rode one. You should see there face the first time they yank the throttle or it whoops the shit out of them! Would I trade my X4 for a RXP...... NOPE!!

I was a bit apprehensive before buying my 96xp...I had been awake since 2am that AM and it was late in the afternoon a couple of hundered miles away from my home where I met the seller.

I asked him for a test ride, after the first pull of the throttle I was hooked. I was tired no longer, eyes wide open. Didn't even counter offer what we had discussed on the phone and I am all about bang for the buck.

I got mine for a pretty good deal (considering it had no trailer) but I have since had to fix all the issues we all seem to have, fuel gauge, VTS, seat cover, handle bar pad etc.

At the end of the day, I will hopefully have a ski that costs 10% of what a new RXT costs, and I will be having the same (or more) fun!

I agree with you on that! I love the fact that I can actually work on my own ski, rather than have to take it to the stealerships to hook it up to their magic black box. As far as looks go though, (excluding the GTS) I feel that seadoo really got this shit together in 1999 as far as color schemes go. They finally quit with the feminine pastel colors and started making them look like the bad ass toys they really are. I mean come on, dressing an X4 in pink/purple decals is like making Stallone wear a too-too. It's as if the Austrians were stuck in the 80's an extra decade lol

There is a lot of truth to what skew is saying, my buddy's 2010 super charged GTX is heavy and rides him, when we switched (my 96 GTX) I did not like the ride, we ride in the ocean and his ski bangs hard and does not turn as well, my handling is nicer = more fun! Of course he can blow me out of the water w/ speed but that is only part of the fun!

personally, I've never ridden that style XP, I wish someone here in NC had one! I've only had the pleasure of throwing around my X4s, an SP a few GTSs, as well as a few Yamas and Kawi standups. I'd like to hear an unbiased comparison of the two.

I would trade an XP for RXP, but only b/c I could sell the RXP and build one bad ass XP and still have money for a few tanks of fun X)

Well, I dodged a bullet here. Here's the story...

I texted the guy yesterday, he said be here at 5 tomorrow. I showed up around 5, brought a battery, it wouldnt turn over (this may be the cause of my bad starter on my 96gsx if you have been following that saga). It would turn over with the plugs out, but with them in no cigar.

VTS Worked, no real damage on the ski, actually the hull was in like mint condition. I brought my compression tester, but it didnt have enough juice to get a reading. The ski had been rebuilt a few years ago also, more on that later.

Anyways, I asked him if he minded if I try and jump start it. He was real hesitant, he knew you couldnt do that and it was his father in laws ski, and I explained it to him the whole procedure (having the car off is safe yada yada yada), and he was still hesitant. I was like "listen buddy, I belong to SDF and through many years of trials and tribulations through my own ski here, i know more than you and your an idiot" (Well maybe not those words exactly but I showed my cards and let him know i know my way around these skis LOL)

He finally agreed and i went to my car to grab the jumpers, and was like "damnit" I left them at home. So I was like Ill be right back I gotta run back to my house and grab them, its only 10 min away. He said that was fine and wouldnt you know when I was pulling out some jackwagon driving some old beater truck shows up to look at the ski, of course he was of the Missouri Redneck variety as well. So I was like you better be here when I get back my battery is still in there.

I get back like 25 minutes later and I see that the guy has driven through the yard to jumpstart the ski with cables he had in his truck, and convieniently shuts off the ski as soon as I show up. I was like "sounds like she is a runner huh", and the ol boy was like yeah I guess she runs, downplaying it LOL. At this point I was just frustrated because I knew I was no longer going to get the deal that I wanted (i wasnt going to pay more than 700 for it just because I honestly didnt want another project), but I was pissed because now the guy was haggling with the other guy and the old boy was playing dumb with this guy saying like "well the trim doesnt work anymore", well no shit you dumbass plug the key back in and it will.

Anyways the buyer was kind of a jackass, I saw his compression tester there and asked him what the compression was, and was like "bet it was 150, huh?". He kinda shrugged and didnt say much but a couple glares at me, and was haggling with the guy and was like, "will you knock $50 off for me?" Of course the guy agreed

I said, "So 950 then?, thats a helluva deal". The buyer was like sorry man this isnt a bidding war I was the first one to call on it. And the seller just kinda shrugged...at this point I was like okay then whatever (because I wasnt going to pay 950 for it, but I just wanted this guy not to get a good deal on it to make a point). I ripped MY battery out of the ski (damn I should crossed the connections looking back on it LOL...nah that would be mean) tossed it in my truck and took off. At the end it was just like me and the buyer standing there and I was like "your really taking him to the cleaners on this deal", he really didnt say anything. So i got in my truck, and texted the guy "your getting f'ing ripped off by this guy, he's bending you over on this deal, someone will pay you $1700 for that ski all day and that guy knows it", he was like "well then come back and gimme 1700", I was like "sorry, I was only trying to get a deal on it like that guy but now i just want to "fudge" that guy over because hes a "dork" and to let you know you are getting the shaft on this deal.

That was about where it ended. All in all it was good because I need another ski like I need a hole in the head but still frustrating all in the same, I hate crappy sellers but understand its rough out there in the Craigslistworld

This guy doesn't care too much for 97 SPX's either.....

Ha oddly enough after posting my last post last night, I found a 97 SPX with a bad crank and bought it. I went to look at it and for $300 with a trailer it had to be mine. Just got it home and looked at it, nice little ski.

Can someone elaborate on the exhaust box more? I will most likely be fixing this ski and selling, and if there is something special about the exhaust I would like to switch it out on my 95 XP 800.

wow, if this is the one you plan on selling, I'd wanna see your 95! this is a gem. there are few X4's out there these days that don't need a whole new motor (if they haven't got one yet that is). Finding one in that shape... that's a gem. should sell with no problem!
