Weird throttle bog 717- Need Help!

It was full when I bought it of god knows what mix. Ran it down and added 8 gallons and like 24-26oz of oil (tank now full). Rode it a few more times and filled it back up with 10 gallons...how much more oil needs to go in it now? It seemed rich when I put the 8 gallons in at 40:1 so how much should I put in for the additional 10 gallons?

I also used a royal purple fuel treatment to raise the octane and counteract any ethanol. I used 87 octane for 8 gallon fillup and 93 for 10 gallon.

80:1 doesn't sound good to me either. I looked up my owner's manual and nowhere the ratio is given but I would assume 50:1 to be a safe value.

And even then, I read somewhere not to premix in the tank (unless you are doing a burn-in like me) because it will not lube correctly. I was also told by BRP that this kind of oil is often too thick for premixing and that it will not mix well in gas and will cause issues.

Check your compression right away.

ok, I think I kind of get what you're saying.. just know that regardless of how many gallons you used/didn't use, etc... EACH TIME you fill up, no matter if youre ADDING 1 gallon or 10, you NEED to mix the correct ratio per each gallon.
For example, lets say your tank did have 8 gallons of properly mixed 40:1, even if you only use 3 gallons, IF YOU ADD 10 gallons, you NEED to mix that NEW batch of 10 gallons at 40:1... Did you do that or just add the fuel without adding the proper oil to it?

I'm under the assumption your oil injection system is not hooked up?

So the correct value is 40:1 according to 96spxpos. Always good to know but if you went above that for a long period (meaning more than five minutes), you may have a serious engine problem.

Same behavior?

mine would bog about 3500 RPM, then take off and run fine at WOT for about 30 seconds then RPMs would just suddenly drop to 4000 and bog/barely run, then take off for another 30 seconds. Pulled the red wire off rectifier, ran great.

I added fuel to lean it out since it was fouling plugs but no oil. But have only started it for a few seconds 2-3 times. So I need to add the appropriate 40:1 amount of fuel to the 10 gallons I added to maintain an overall 40:1?

Oil injection is not working but still hooked up. I haven't checked that out yet as I'm not familiar with that system

Compression checks out in the 140's

My rectifier is part of the harness. There is a local shop to me that has one for $25 but he said I would have to put my plug end on it. Can I just unplug the whole rectifier from the harness at the flip and test it that way to see if it's that? Yours is a 717?

yes, you need to use the appropriate premix ratio for any amount of fuel that goes into the tank.

and, since your oil injection isn't working, you NEED to follow this guide for blocking it off appropriately or you WILL damage that engine. if the plastic gear in there (and spring too I believe) seizes up for whatever reason, that good compression motor wont do you any good..
I was the same way, unfamiliar with it, but I followed this guide AND the MANY threads on here about it, and they got me through it...on BOTH of my 717's...

Here's the guide: http://www.shopsbt.com/forum/t15142/

and copy ALL of this exactly and type it into Google...it will pull up ALL the threads on this subject.. If you don't find your answers about it here, you won't EVER find it... its ALL covered here... and, feel free to ask questions here..but look it over first.

At 140, compression is adequate but follow the advice about blocking the oil injection system. Otherwise, have it fixed asap. It will save you many problems.

So... your not finished yet!!

take the pilot jet out and spray half a can of carb cleaner through the pilot circuit with the low speed screw closed and then half way through open it up 3 turns and keep spraying.
You can use 1/8" fuel line over the carb cleaner straw and that fit's the hole for the pilot jet nice enough to force all the fluid in.

If the filter is that clogged, the pilot circuit is going to be pretty gummed up too.

And is that a grey tempo line in the picture ?
