Weird throttle bog 717- Need Help!

Ski ran fine then started gradually bogging worse and worse. Did fuel lines, and filter and problem was still there. I can give it 1/4-1/3 throttle and it's fine the cuts down. Revs to the moon on the trailer, battery is new.


Am I looking at the voltagereg/rectifier? Ski is 98 gs720. My buddy had same problem with his 787 and it was the rectifier.

Thoughts?
 
Try unplugging the voltage reg/rectifier? Open gas cap? Pressure check lines and system? Look at seal on water separator / fuel filter under front hatch? Take it out of the system with a piece of tubing.
 
Can I safely run the ski without the regulator/rectifier?

All the fuel system checks out.

The bogging only happens in the water too. Revs fine on trailer.
 
you say fuel system checks out. did you pressure test it?

if any of your venting check valves are disconnected or faulty, that ski will still idle fine in the water and rev to the moon on the trailer, but under load will fall flat on its face.
 
Did not pressure test it, how do I do that? I'm still new to skis. Im starting to think something in the carb is blocked or dirty. The PO said it was rebuilt but does it sound like its getting starved on the top end? Maybe something is clogged or a jet is loose? My buddy pulled the choke out and it ran fine on the top end and still idled.

I'm also gonna unplug the rectifier and see if that fixes it. [MENTION=48897]96spxpos[/MENTION]
 
Yea, try it, but more than likely its not a rectifier issue.. fuel related. Download the manual for your year ski and go to the fuel section (Section 6 I believe, yes I've studied the manual for multiple skis, skis I don't even own). very simple. Also, again, you said your buddy pulled the choke and it ran fine and idled. that is a fuel delivery issue.
 
Ok checking out the manual and your posts now. Gonna test the ski in the morning with rectifier unplugged just to rule it out before I tear the intake off and carb apart. If not the carb is coming apart, and getting cleaned and checking the internal filter too.

Also my throttle cable is loose, could this have anything to do with it and is there anythin I special I need to do when tightening it.
 
The common rectifier issue is with 96 model 787's only. It's rare for any others to fail, especially a 717.

52- Did you check the fuel valve, filter O-ring, and internal carb filter like I suggested when I answered your PM?

Checking the carb tomorrow and pulling it apart and cleaning internal filter.

What valve and o ring are you talking about? Also the fuel filter up front just drops in the plastic isn't attached to anything right?
 
Inside that plastic thing is a filter/water separator. That's what he's talking about. That needs to be CLEAN and air tight. That's why he also said check the o ring. If it's pinched, bad, or dry rotted, you'll be sucking air, which will give you your symptoms

And to be completely honest, on a ski like that that's new to you, it's not even worth opening up those carbs just to clean the filters and put them back together unless you have two carb rebuilt kits on hand .. Not saying you HAVE to rebuild them, but if you open them up, and the diaphragms are pinched or out of round and don't sit flush, or if your gaskets are dry rotted or stretched, you can't put them back together anyway bc your ski will likely not run.. So would personally have those on hand beforehand bc let's say you open the carbs then notice the issue(s) then you order you carb kits, depending on where you order from, your water trip could be set back a week easily. Just for piece of mind, even if you don't need them now, you eventually will. You can get them as cheap as like $40 a piece I think for genuine kits (someone correct me if I'm wrong on the price, I think that's about what I paid for mine)

So the filter does not just loosely sit in there? Is it an o ring on the large housing part that unscrews or does the filter actually go up and attach to something up under there? I guess I'm kinda confused.

I just dropped the new "filter" inside the white screw off housing but it's not attached to anything and neither was the dirty One I pulled out. Is that my problem?
 
Sorry my mistake I wrote you a long response this morning, don't know what happened.

The O-ring is in the perimeter of the top of the white plastic screw on sediment collection bowl.
 
You're fine, I was surprised I hadn't heard back. So if that isn't seated properly is causing air to get into my fuel and most likely my issue? It started bogging before I changed the filter. Does the filter inside actually attach to anything or just sit in the white housing?
 
So when i pulled the original filter out it was not attached up top and seated to the upper part of the filter housing (head) so I just made sure the new filter was seated up top and then that the canister was sealed. does it sound like this was my issue?
 
This looks like too much oil. Trust me, I am currently breaking in a new motor with lots of extra oil. I clean these plugs in gasoline then use a toothbrush to finish the job (no your own toothbrush:rolleyes:)...

And I have a 717 also. Mine is a 2003.

I mixed 40:1 previous tank and it was 24oz of oil to 8 gallons I think. Is that way too much? I put another 10 gallons of straight fuel and no oil in it yesterday and it didn't clear up. Unless it's not mixed or the oil clogged something?

What do I need to do besides clean the plugs?
 
Now they you say that it ran fine until I put the first tank of fuel in it. I pumped fuel then added oil. Also my injection is not functions so that's why I'm premixing.

coincidentally replaced the rectifier on my '96 GSX yesterday.
 
filter.jpgsorry, was late on sending this, but hope it gives you an idea. Yes, the filer just drops in. and yes, if that little black o ring that went around the circumference of the entire upper part of the bottom housing wasn't seated right, dry rotted, broken, stretched, loose, etc...it will DEFINITELY give you performance issues.. Now, we are NOT saying that is or most likely is your issue, but it's happened. worst case, you looked it over and eliminated it as a cause.
 
wait...so your gas tank holds 18 gallons?
well if you did what I think you did, it looks like you were about an ounce and a half short of making 40:1, and then by adding ten gallons, you basically made that tank 80:1. not good.. (someone correct me if I'm wrong)
