Wear ring change

Hey, I got a question that I haven't seen posted yet. I changed my wear ring just like you see in all the instructions, after my old one got chewed up, the clearance was good and everything turned easy. I installed the pump assembly back in the ski (there were two shims on the bottom two studs originally when removed and I left them in place), and I tightened everything up. The problem I have now is the engine is hard to turn over both with the starter and by hand. I looked up the back of the pump and it looks like the whole pump assembly is warped slightly and the impeller is hitting the wear ring a little now on one side. When I loosen the 4 attach points up a little the engine is easy to turn again. I tried tightening up all of the attach points in increments and checking to see when the engine got hard to turn and right at the end everything gets tight. I am at a loss, I am using the same pump assy, with the same shims so nothing should really change. Any ideas?

check to see if the rubber driveshaft bumpers fell out of the driveshaft end, an are jamming the pump.

timmy beat my post lol

I looked at it right before I put the pump back on, so I am pretty certain it is in correctly. It was one of the things I checked prior to installation.

I have been reading my manual in the last few minutes and all it says to do is tighten the nuts up criss-cross, which is what I did, but had no luck.

Tomorrow, I am going to remove the pump assy again and recheck the bumper, and try again, I have no idea why it is binding up like it is. I will let you know what I find.

I don't know, it was as tight as I could get it and the end play I have now is between 1/16 and 1/8 inch. The assembly seems to be fine out of the ski, it turns easy enough with the cone on, but not too easy and is not sloppy. It is just the last few turns on the nuts when installing the assy that makes everything go south!

Well, I removed the entire pump assy, cleaned everything up and couldn't find anything wrong, so I put it back on again. The only difference this time is that I sprayed the wear ring and impeller with silicon lube. Torqued it in place going from one corner across to the other and it tightened up some, but not too tight where I couldn't spin the engine over. It is in the water now and seems to be running just fine.....time will tell.

i'd try without the shims, maybe its binding up there, or shim top, and use neoprene seal to help accomodate the extra shim/2
