Water Temp Gauge

Anyways, when I picked up the boat at the marina today, my temp sensor was in... The 3 wire one. Very strange that this sensor was a solid piece of metal... No spring, so it required a bit of a custom install as the clip needed a couple SS washers to hold the sensor in tight and level. But sure enough, the gauge started to read a temperature!!! Woohoo.., another small victory today!

Good thing I got a temp gauge with a range of 60F to 200F, as normal operating temperature has the gauge just a smidge past the half way marker (no numbers on my gauge)... But if the gauge is properly calibrated, it runs about 125F... Which I think is normal for these engines!

Now that I have the engine repaired with a new stator, 2 new switch boxes and a new voltage regulator ... Engine is running better then ever! However the one unusual thing is that the water temp gauge now reads slightly less then it did prior to going in for repair?
Before it used to read slightly above half way on the gauge when at full clip. But now, it just barely reaches half way? So probably 5-10 degrees lower then before?
Is it possible that the engine would actually run a bit cooler when it is running better after the repair I mentioned above?

Is the water in the lake, 5~10 deg cooler now?

If it's that small of a change... I wouldn't worry. Your engine doesn't have a thermostat in it... so the running temp depends on the water you are floating in.
 
Yes, this weekend the water temp is down about 6-7 degrees. So that adds up! So is this a linear effect? In
October/November when the water really dips down, the operating of the engine will also drop by the same amount, or there abouts?

yep.

The 2.5L engines CAN have thermostats in them. If you are going to run in icy waters... then I would look into it. I know there's a pop-et place on the side of the block... but I think the T-stats go in the heads.

It's more reliable without them (less likely to plug up) but the engines run with less smoke when they are a little warmer.
