Using Baterry Selector Switch v ACR

looking to install a 2nd battery to handle Fishfinder, GPS, bilge Pump, Nav Lights, etc. want to isolate/charge via a manual Battery Selector Switch rather than an ACR (Auto Charge Relay) - $20 v $80+..

if i install the Switch and use the 1+2 setting when the engine is running and the 2 setting (for the 2nd battery) when the engine is not running for the FF, GPS, etc

this isolates the 1 (starter) battery for starting, allows disconnection of both, and allows charging from the engine (1+2) when the engine is running..

the 2nd battery will be the same (or close) to the starter type.

what am i missing??

I bought the kit for west marine...
Battery acts like a long term storage capacitor. The way the ACR is wired in, there is no switching of where the alternator power goes. Rather it defaults to the starting battery and charges it to top off, then closes to parallel the two batteries. However, at this point, if the house battery is lower than the starting battery, the HB will act as a load to the SB and the alternator. The alt will run to charge the combined parallel battery.
so in a nut shell, with a switch you totally insolate each battery

exactly......
My old boat just had a switch, I would run the engines off one
and parked at cove listen to stereo I would switch to other battery
so i would never get stranded....
I run a acr now, much nicer in my opinion
I never switch it, and listen to amp and stereo for hours
and never charge batteries or ever stranded

my 4 tec down here in raleigh has some problems
wish i could figure that one out!!!!
