I'm thinking about a Jeep JK 2 door.

Tows 2K

I'm close to the limit w/2 skis and gear, but can't find the spec on the trailer weight.

LoadRite double trailer, galvanized.

2002 XP 562
2002 GTX 663
Fuel - 15 gallons 90
Fuel - 14 gallons 84
Trailer ???
Gear 200

Total 1599

any idea what my trailer would weigh?

Did you happen to check the title for the trailer, it might have the weight on it. Very sad for a Jeep, my wife's VW Routan (Rebadged Chrysler Minivan) has a better tow rating at 3500# but the base model only will do 2K. Step up to the 4 door and I think you get the 3500# rating. While your at it get the 10th Anniversary Rubicon, for a cool $40g's+.

I would also go to their website and see if there is a trailer that "looks" like yours as this would give you decent information I would think.
They are LoadRite.com

They list only 2 two-place models in Galvanized at this time.

One can carry 2200 and the other 2450. The easiest way to tell is the over-all length.

2200 is 16ft 2 in and the 2450 is 17ft 2 inch long...

Don't do it... it's not a tow vehicle.

With that said... if it's bone stock, you can safely pull a single 4-tec, or a double 2-stroke. But that's it.

If it's lifted... don't even try it. It's not safe. I use to pull a single ski trailer with my old Jeep... and it was fine on a short trip... but I was only at around 1,000 Lbs.

The real prob with a CJ5, YJ, TJ, JK, etc... is that the wheelbase is short, and if they start to sway... it will get ugly quick. The chassis itself is more than capable that dealing with the weight... but the length is just too short.

FYI... a double trailer can be anywhere from around 250 Lbs and up. My THIN, light double is 235 Lbs unloaded. I had an older one, that was much thicker... and it was almost 400 empty. Post a pic of the trailer... and I can give you a guest-imate

*****EDIT*******

IF... you decide to do it... add trailer brakes to it, and an electric controller in the jeep. That way... if it starts to sway... you can tap the brakes on the trailer, and straighten it out, before you land on your lid.

You can get a brake conversion for about $200... and a basic controller is $50. I love electric brakes on trailers... they work great and take the load off the tow vehicle. FYI... I pulled the surge break from my Islandia, and changed them to electric.

I've got a jeep compass rated at 2000lbs, that I tow one 2-stroke ski on a single trailer. I don't think I would tow more. It tows the one ski fine and I like the gas mileage.

Agree with doc, there is nothing better than trailer brakes, especially if you're close to the weight capacity. Really makes pulling trailers enjoyable and safe.

If the tag is still on the trailer...take a look at it. Models number sometimes tell the Capacity of the trailer. Mine has 900 at the end, then the GVW is at 1050. the manufacture said to subtract the two and you get the weight of the trailer...so in my case 1050-900=150 for the trailer.

If a single is only 150' a double should be around 400.

You can actually get trailer sway control on the JK.

My normal ski tow rig is a 2005 Mazda Tribute. Tows 3500. Not the fastest setup, but works well.

My boat tow rig is my 09 Tahoe... Which tows 7,200 and has the factory brake controller. (And the boat has electric brakes that I added a few years ago).

The ramp is only 14 miles each way. Anything more and we would take the Mazda. I just miss my top down TJ bad... Now that the JK has a real engine...

And yes, same engine, same axles, same brake, the 4 door hauls 3500.... 2k is cutting it close, but for 14 miles in a 45 zone...

Yes, I had a lifted Rubicon, and I'm looking for a JK rubicon.

Do I really want GPS in a vehicle with no roof or doors?! I do. But so does some jackass every time I would park it....

The real way out here, is to just buy the 4 door version. That extra length will make a world of difference.

As I said... above... it's not the strength of the chassis... it's length. Heck... if you get a Rubicon Pack... you are getting 1/2 truck running gear under it.
