having to maintain RAVE's would not make me choose a 95 XP over the 787 96. The power different from the 717 XP and the 96 787 XP is night and day and id buy a 96 all day over a 95. That's just my opinion

96 XP800!
Keep the 2 strokes alive!

I'm in Missouri.

The actual price for the ski is less than a thousand, but with the trailer, it's 1200. Like I said, I need both, so the total price is what it is. Maybe he'll take less, but he said firm so that's probably what it is.

Yea, the 787 is really tempting, but there aren't any in my area for sale that are in the same price range or running condition (assuming the guy isn't BSing on the 717's condition).

Keep in mind I don't have a ski now so I'm hoping that even a 717 would seem fast and fun. Also, my girlfriend would be riding it and it might be a good idea if it were a little slower so she could handle it better. :) lol

Just be willing to walk away. Not sure how it is there, but 717 xps and 787 xps pop up all the time in ohio. Hard to do, but don't get too excited and just wait for the right deal. Good luck.

Best advice here! Get the right ski. If you have ANY reservations just do t buy it. I know this can be tough as you get emotionally drawn to every ski that excites you a little.

I don't care what anyone says.. 787>718 any day of the week. However, if you can get a good deal on a 95, by all means it is a very fun ski. I have A LOT of seat time on that ski and it's a fun great jumper!

Uh-oh, I think I'm gonna stir the pot, but a lot of non brand specific PWC forums say that Sea-Doos are pretty unreliable compared to the Yamahas. In your unbiased opinions, would you say that's fair?

Like I said, my biggest thing is reliability. Since I don't have one to compare it to (and haven't been on one in 10 years), they will probably all be fun. I really don't want a maintenance nightmare.

My dad's 96 gtx is 100% original, never worked. Having issues now needing base maint, but 19 hard years and still running. Just some new hoses and fuel sys cleaning and corroded wire replaced this year and it is running strong again, 6500rpm+ and 45mph in chop.

I've been dealing with that load of hooha for over 20 years now. Their fanboy brand loyalty clouds their judgment. First off, It's a numbers game. There are a significantly greater number of 2 stroke seadoos out there than any other brand. So yeah, there are going to be MORE seadoos in for repairs than the other brands. Also, it really boils down to how a ski is maintained. I've seen a ton of Yami's and Kawi's that have been run hard and put away wet that needed a rebuild far sooner than they should have and I've seen plenty of Sea-Doos that have gone so many hours without a rebuild it's almost hard to believe. And I've seen the reverse of that statement.

I love all brands but the X4 is my favorite ski. Just take care of your chit and it will last you a long time. Of course, buying used there's always a risk. Unless you plan on a complete factory rebuild or a rebuild for one of the very few well respected tuners on here.

That makes sense, and don't think I'm dogging on your skis. I just want to make an informed decision. My life is too busy for more projects so hopefully whatever I get isn't too time consuming. You're right that I'll be taking a risk no matter with buying used and at my price point.

OK, I feel like I'm noobing up this thread so I apologize for that. I think I'm about to get everything I need to make an informed decision and then maybe I can be a normal member.

So, the price is indeed firm. I have found another Seadoo (GTI) that I think is a 1996. It is the same price. So both are $900. The good news is that I've found a trailer to buy for $150. So my grand total will be $1050 on either ski that I choose.

The question I have is: Are trailers "one size fits all" or is it possible the GTI would be too big for a smaller trailer? I assume that if the trailer was meant for a larger ski, the smaller would still be ok. Thoughts?

Any 2 stroke will fit on that trailer. Don't get the gti, slow and boring....it's a cruiser meant to carry multiple people.

:) Yea. This is a dilemma for me. My girlfriend (who will eventually be my wife) isn't exactly the strongest/agile so I worry that she won't be able to climb back up an XP if/when she wrecks.

So, I'm still leaning towards the XP, but for her, the GTI would probably be better. And, I would still have fun on it even if not as much. Maybe the XP isn't so hard to climb back on? Or could I rig up some sort of rope ladder on the back so she could get on easier? (reeled up during riding obviously)

Ya, I wouldn't get the 96 gti, it's the older body style. Though noticeably faster than the 97, it had less storage, was more prone to get water into the front bin, and had less padding in the seat. The 97 gti was overall better, but it did gain 100 lbs. This helped it on the ocean some, as did the increased fuel capacity.

Slow and boring will be relative..

I cannot speak to power of gti, but the even larger gtx with 787 is quite fun, specially for new rider. Not as nimble by any means but for a new rider or if he plans to have passengers a larger ski could be beneficial starting out. Dad's gtx has no problem getting airborne and handles choppy water with ease, water the xp would be bouncing like mad in. I would love a xp myself but do not think a bigger ski is boring or without benefit as a first ski...

OP, GO RIDE BOTH! If water is flat then cut back on your own wake to see how they both handle chop so you can decide wich you prefer..

Good info, thanks, I will avoid gti too

OK, the last two posts kinda make it an easy decision for me. Hell, more prone to get water in it is enough all by itself. Thanks guys. What did people do before the internet?

This happened anytime you lifted the hood to put something inside and weren't dead stopped. Not so much when you're just riding around.

That trailer should work for any ski. You can loosen the u-bolts on that winch post and slide it forward to accommodate the larger 3 seater.

I have a 97 gti which is the first year for the new hull design. I've heard it's much more stable than the earlier hull but I'll let someone else chime in on that since I've never ridden one.

Eh, the older hull was plenty stable, probably even more than the new one because it was lighter and lower to the water. But I didn't like the angle that it forced your knees into, being 6'1". A friend let me borrow his gti with the 720 and I was shocked by how fast it was, as I was used to a 587 pushing that hull. I still wouldn't trade it for my 97 as it looks and rides way better.
