Guys: WAY too busy to test anything on the lake today.
I will do the zip tie behind the bellows, but I did not see any water at all from the carbon seal during my test ride. Is it reasonable to expect some water slinging off the carbon seal if it were leaking, since I had the PTO cover off during the test ride?
As far as testing the channel, it looks like I can disconnect a water line at the T where the line goes into the mag cooler. If I hook that line up to a garden hose, the water should follow the normal water circuit thru the mag cooler and into the lower water channel, then out the rear water channel drain line.
If I understand the diagram, By shortcutting the water circuit, I would not be running the water into the exhaust pipe or muffler, so I would not risk flooding the engine. So I do not need to even run the engine for this test. Right? I guess it would be safer to disconnect the drain line at its T and route it out of the bilge.
If that is true, then all the water that goes into the water channel should come out the drain line. If it starts to fill up the bilge, then I know there is a problem with the water channel cover. Right? Or does that water fill up the cylinder water jackets also? If that is true, then the drain line that comes out from each cylinder under the fuel rail and T's up with the lower drain line from the water channel will also fill up.
The water circuit in the Shop Manual does not show how water runs thru the block. I will look in other sections of the manual to see if I can learn more in the meantime.
