Sportster 657x NO START

I hope you have a good honest dealer. Often I find they have inexperienced mechanics and throw parts at the problem and that ain't cheap. On a side note, I think checking the carbs is a good place to start. They'll rebuild them of course and that is $$. You might have been able to install new carbs for the price they'll charge to check them. As we cajuns say in South Louisiana... C'est lavie (that's life). In the end you want a good reliable ski. Good Luck !!

Hi guys,

I am in need of some advice.

Three weeks at the dealer and $500 later the boat is still not running. The dealer checked the carbs and said they looked good. The dealer then pulled the rotary valve cover and they thought timing may be off. This was also good. The dealer is now stating that he thinks that this may be a stator issue. The dealer wants to pull the engine to see if it is good. They are giving me the option to pull it and bring it in. I just don’t know if a stator would be causing the issue I am seeing. What are your thoughts? I am willing to pull the engine again but am afraid that the dealer will see no issue and then we are on to the next check list item.

let me know your thoughts and what you would do.

thanks

Gentlemen,

today is the day that the Sportster lives again. The dealer went through the carbs and found nothing wrong, through the rotary valve and found that it was timed correctly. Next the dealer wanted to pull the engine and check the stator. They also gave me the option to pull the engine and bring the engine in. Really not wanting to do this and skeptical that this was a stator issue I tried a last ditch effort. I had replaced the ignition coil and rectifier at one point in time with aftermarket parts. Though the boat was firing, I don’t believe that it was firing correctly. I replaced both of these pieces with the original factory parts and it took off!

thank you all for your help and guidance with FINALLY getting this thing running.

Hey guys,

wanted to see your thoughts on the new issue. I adjusted carbs and the boat seems to be running good. We were cruising along full throttle when the boat immediately died. I was no longer able to start the boat and it was smoking out of the exhaust. I got the boat home and turned it over several times and several gallons of water came pouring out of the exhaust until the boat finally cleared its throat and began running fine once again. Any thoughts on why this much water would be in the exhaust. I found a round Red O gasket that had come from the exhaust a few weeks back and I’m wondering if this had something to do with it.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
