So I had this crazy idea on how to remove ethanol from gas.

Looks like it works, someone else already did it. Guess it will work?

I didn't look at the link.... but, why bother? It's not a big deal, and in some ways it's good. The alcohol itself doesn't' cause any issues, once you you put stabilizer in it, and put in fuel hoses that are alcohol compatible. And... the alcohol suppresses detonation.

It's what we have now... so live with it.

And for all the people who don't believe that good fuel stabilizers work... ask BigJake. He burnt a tank of fuel out of my XP that was at least a year old... and he didn't have a single problem the entire day.

As a final thought.... you are paying for it in your fuel... so regardless what you may think... you will still be removing up to 10% (by volume) of your fuel !!

The link just takes me to the main forum page. Is ethanol free gas available where you are? Most marinas near me sell ethanol free gas. Granted it is about a dollar more a gallon but worth it.

Wow, this would be a three way tie.

Wash ethanol from gas

Watch paint dry

Watch water boil

I'm cheap, and creative, but my time is worth more to me that the extra cash I spend in gas. Now if you were making your own diesel, that would be worth it.

So, if you can get better gas go for it, I just don't see the savings. I can't get ethanol free gas near me, not even on the water. I use stabil in my toys and never have problems. And as far as better fuel economy, I'd first have to get a new truck or a used one that gets better than 10 to 12 mpg. What ever you do, just do it safely and properly dispose of the by product.

I have never found stabil or any stabilizer to work as good as ethanol free gas. When I dont ride my dirt bike I have to completely drain the gas out of the tank and carb or I will be tearing it apart in even a few weeks.

I burn it like it is(fresh only), then go get more. In winter storage, my tank is dry.

Oh boy, this 10% ethanol can separate into a gelatinous goo in just weeks, works fine until all the cool old stuff is lost to the landfills b/c it's seized from this fuel that rots in your tank.

Soon, probably next year, I'm planning to go up a step on my plug heat range to a BR7 out of curiosity, the BR8's seem a wee bit too cold and they'll soon be over a decade old so it's nearly time to swap them out.

I use the stabil brand, Marine kind. I use it in my 58 bug that gets driven a handful of times from April to October, and I don't go thru a tank of gas in that time. It's only an 8 gallon tank. I also put it in my 71 nova, I just took it out for the first time in 14 months, fired right up and ran like a top. I actually took it to get inspected- 2 months late, I then ripped around in it a few days then back in the shed.

I agree with you on that! Let me know how that separation thing works out, it sounds like a lot of work to me. The only 2 stroke engines I've ever had seizures with were a direct result of skunky fuel. I've also switched my pre-mix to a better oil now than I used to get by with, same ratio of 32:1.

I don't care whether it's got stabil in it or not, I won't run old fuel through a 2 stroke, old fuel(more than a month) goes into one of the four strokes for proper disposal.

Wow, I've been putting stabil in my 2 strokes and 4 strokes for years. Never had a problem with separation. My Speedster is set for pre mix, 40 gallons, most times I'll top it off at the end of the season. But sometimes not. You sure you guys are putting it in the gas tank? Lol.

LOL, oh hell, in the fuel! Okay then....... :) No seriously, I just buy what I need unless it's on sale(AKA 2008) and in that case I ride A LOT MORE.

But I'll admit, I do put sta-bil in my customers boats for winter, IF they fill up with ethanol free fuel.

Forgive me for being adventurous and wanting to try something that may possibly give me an advantage.

I'm all for making things better, and experimenting, so don't let us discourage your experiments. But, putting the time and lost fuel to the side....

What "Advantage" are you getting?

The comment about dirt bikes having issues, I just don't believe it. I have a garage full of toys that burn gas. I've never had issues. And trust me... my motorcycles sit all winter, just like my boat and jetskis. It is true that there can be a separation... but it's really only an issue if you already have wet fuel.

In that case... it will happen in E0 fuel too. Boats have had water traps forever, and if you ever fly full scale aircraft... one of the things you do on your preflight, is to tap the fuel tanks, and check for water separation.

The marina's at the lake have been selling ethanol free gas 91 octane gas all summer, it's at a .65 premium. I've been using it all summer and from my personal perspective there's not .10 difference, much less .65, I'm going back to regular. I'll probably fill up with the ethanol free before winter storage.

Alcohol free fuel is becoming more available. Aviation fuel used by small planes still use 100 octane low lead. The leaded fuel has been on a waver. Alcohol fuels can't be use due to the moisture collecting that happens. At freezing temps, the moisture freezes the fuel lines. Mo-gas has been approved for low compression engines, but with no alcohol. Replacements for the lead are being developed. Good news for Sea Doo's!! More demand for alcohol-free fuel. More refineries producing, lower cost.

Lead replacements interests me, any idea what they might be? I've heard cruise ships have/are testing platinum/palladium nanoparticles suspended in diesel fuel in order to reduce emissions but it sounds prohibitively expensive to me.

Long shot - Molybdenum, maybe?

They have been successful with replacements getting up to 96-97 octane. Getting a replacement that is stable thur storage and can be produced without high cost is the goal. Also, it needs to pass FAA standards - long duration engine running in real world tests. As for, what is the magic stuff? I don't know yet. I been adding some Moly- stuff to my now sulfur less diesel. Helps a little.

Hold on a minute, the wind just blew my aluminum foil hat off. I'll be right back.

Boy, it's getting to the point that ya can't swing a dead cat around without hitting an ethanol debate thread...

not to get off topic, but can someone give me an oil recommendation? :reddevil:

Yep... Benzine and Toluene. But they made us take that our of fuel too.

In my last Diesel truck... I was putting it a quart of TC-w3 oil, with a tank of fuel to keep my pump lubed. Worked good. The VP pumps were known to give up on the ULSD, but I had 260K mi on mine.

Try Ethanol Shield http://www.b3cfuel.com/products/ethanol-shield/

I own a small landscape co. and it has keps all my small engines running mint. My buddy that owns a huge biss. here in town also started running it this year and has zero breakdowns this year. He told me the last few years he has been putting on 6 or so crabs on his equipment. My equipment dealer has also told me the Mechanic in a Bottle is great stuff for those engines that have been sitting., read up on it.

Also check out these videos. U can tell what product is what even tho they removed the labels. My buddy and I did this test last winter with Ethanol Shield and sea Foam and came us with the same results
