Hi -

A pair of 04 GTI LE RFI skis are for sale near me. Would these be good general use skis for a my family? Are they known as a durable and reliable ski?

George

Yes, these are durable and reliable but not trouble-free now they're quite old and may have problems that can be a challenge to resolve. Unlikely turn-key.

And George, if you're an underemployed widow mother of 2 children on a shoestring budget and aren't familiar with the special attributes of 2-stroke engines, unable to work on it yourself as opposed taking it to a shop $$$$$$$, I advise to stay away. Unless you currently have engine grease under your nails and a truckload of personal tools, then maybe.

If they're being sold as non-running you need to at least check the basics to assess condition (if you don't know off hand what to look for in a used 2-sroke then pass), if sold as running then at least 30 minutes each of seat time in the water is a must.

The price will probably double with the 1st trip to a repair shop..... (my guess)

Thanks - I can work on stuff, but I also have a lot of stuff to work on... I am happy to take good care of and maintain my equipment but two additional engines that require frequent intervention to keep running is not high on my list.

Having said that, the skis appear to be well taken care of, have reasonably low (?) hours on them at 136 and 144. I believe they are single owner, but not able to confirm. the asking price is $2500 each

I will probably continue to look.

Any recommendations regarding the best ski to look for?

The average 2-stroke needs or will need at a minimum a top-end rebuild around 200 hours-sh. If there is 300 on the crank when the top-end needs redone, then the entire engine needs rebuilt and or replaced..

Reason being, a 300 hour crank will not hold up to a new top-end.

Not trying to scare you off. Just be advised that older ski's need some one that can wrench. Not that they break a lot, but they need some love and under standing. I buy a lot of used parts from a buddy 20 miles away. I learn a lot, every-time one breaks. We can help you on your quest for Jet Ski fun for the family.
