Hi all, So I buy this 2011 RXT 260 IS with 100 Hrs. Haven't had a ski in 15 years or more but wanted something for my kids and Grandkids when they visit. Took it out for a first run and it burns oil at idle worse than my 69 Nova 6 cyl. with 140k miles did in 1975 and on top of that it only turns right. Now what? I,m a good wrench but don't know skis. I'll get a manual and go from there. I'll do a compression test 1st to see if the compression is ok. After doing some research online I guess I may have a loose steering cable lock down back by the pump. I hope that's not a huge job. If the compression is good I either have wasted valve seals (unlikely) or its time to rebuild the Turbo. If I have missed anything please chime in, I need all the help I can get, I'm way out of my comfort zone.

Steering cable nut is a common failure.

How many hours on the Super Charger (SC)? If unknown, it needs rebuilt no matter the oil issues.

Just starting up after being stored, it will smoke for awhile. Get some fresh fuel going. Spray penetrant oil on rear steering plunger/cable by the jet pump. Spray some on the cable near the front as well.
Start with the cheap then go from there. Check oil. If you don't know when the last time it was changed, change it. Old oil can cause valve problems.

It has 100 Hrs. on it, I didn't think of fogging oil as It came from Florida not likely but possible. Cable doesn't feel stuck but will lube it up some. I'm thinking cable lock nut. Is getting to the nut a big job?

Getting to the nut is easy. Right off the back of the ski by the nozzle.

If the SC has 100 hrs on it, it officially needs rebuilt. If the ski has 100 hrs on it, rebuild the SC for sure. The squirrel cages get brittle with age regardless of hours. If one fails the bearings fall into then oil pan and the motor needs pulled to get to them.

Site sponsor www.PWCmuscle.com rebuilds them for $435. Includes updated parts and return shipping.

Yes I believe rebuilding the SC would be money well spent. I was told the newer models would last 200 hours but I really don't want to take chances. So a SC rebuild is on the to-do list, now I just need to see how difficult it is to replace the suspected steering cable lock. Is that a big job or is it something I can tackle?

Missed the sentence from Coastiejoe"Getting to the nut is easy. Right off the back of the ski by the nozzle". Ok I just need to remove the brake and nozzle I'm guessing and its right there. I understand the replacement aftermarket part is aluminum and that's the best way to go.

You can do it,, pretty easy fix.. Some actually break, but mostly on the boats. They sell an aftermarket aluminum style that seem to be better than the plastic OEM Nut.

Here is a pictorial that I posted on how to change the Synthetic Grease in the Nose Cone. It will show you how to remove the IBR.

If it were me,,, I'd order the tube of grease and replace it while you are in there. You don't have to remove the pump if you don't want to, you can remove just the Nose Cone.

But,,, I'd replace it all like I show and put grease on the input spline and seals.

I found the problem, The steering shaft support (the piece that tilts the steering) where the front of the steering cable sleeve clamps was broken I have a new one on order. The oil is from the center cylinder 40 psi ouch

A little background info for any local forum members to be aware. When I got the ski it was in rough condition cosmetically and also mechanically. I just got it to pull the Grandkids around on tubes and give them rides. I didn't want anything fancy. It did run well though, maybe not race worthy well but it did go plenty fast and it starts right up. It did not turn left and it did burn some oil but it ran good. So I bring it to my local Jet ski dealer I wont use the name but it is located in Gulfport Mississippi and I think its the only one so they have a monopoly. I bring it to them and tell them, "fix the steering and let me know why its burning oil, check the compression and if you see anything else that's obvious let me know" Now I figure, ok I'll get it back and it will turn left and right I'm only going to use it to tow the grandkids so if it uses a bit of oil I can live with that, if it costs a few hundred then ok. Two weeks go by still haven't heard back from the dealership so I call. The owner gets on the phone and tells me the ski is junk not worth fixing and you owe us $400. So I asked him did you fix the steering at least? Nope. so why is the bill $400? Well we tore it all apart to see what it needed that's the labor cost and we didn't want to bill you any more money as the ski is worthless. I said "it runs good uses oil I just want it to turn". I'll just keep an eye on the oil level. He says just come pick it up we have real nice skis I can sell you. I just spent all my extra money on this ski so no thank you. I bring the ski home and it is all in pieces. The outside looked fine but when I got home and opened it up they had totally dismantled it and I mean took it all apart to the point no one would bother to work on it forcing me to buy a new ski from them. Well I put a new steering support in so it will turn left and right, it took two hours and cost $74. I'm not a Jet ski Mechanic but I am a Mechanic and have been for 30+ years so I'm putting it all back together myself and its taken weeks but it runs and as soon as I get all the hoses back on I will splash it and use it. SO, BEWARE OF THE JET SKI DEALER IN GULFPORT MISSISSIPPI!!! You have been warned. I honestly believe they did this to sell me one of their skis because the owner kept saying " I can put you in a used ski that's 100% why bother with this one". Needless to say I will never go back there. So all and any Forum members in the Mississippi gulf coast watch out for this place.
