I have just received my lightly used SBT replacement engine. I received the engine with the rotary valve intact. Do I need to set the timing? I'm asking because I don't have the "degree wheel" and would have to order it from SBT. Next question...how do I remove the drive gear from the clutch-flywheel?

If the rotary valve is intact, you shouldn't have to re-time it, but a phone call to them would verify that. There is no clutch on a seadoo, but the flywheel needs a puller to get it off. Do you have a seadoo shop manual? If not here’s an idea for you. You could join as a "premium member". As a premium member you can down load a authentic seadoo manual from the seadoo manual library. In the library is a variety of manuals for almost all years and models. You can view as many as you like on line as a PDF file, or download it and print it for your personal and private use. There are operator manuals and repair manuals for you to do your own repairs on your seadoo. The repair manuals have everything from troubleshooting, repair procedures to winterizing. It contains wire diagrams torque specs and pictures for disassemble and assemble instructions. In the spec sheets it tells everything needed to maintain oil changes, spark plug gaps, carburetor rebuilds and impeller wear ring tolerances. Click on the "Seadoo Manuals" link at the top of the page for more details. If you need any help or get in a jam, we are always here to answer your questions too. I think a 3 finger puller will work on your model...I'll do some checking and get back to you on a cheaper solution tomorrow...Why are you pulling the flywheel? Hey nice name...:)

Flywheel

I bought a jet ski a couple of weeks ago and the engine blew...I know rookie mistake buying a p.o.s. Now I am replacing with an SBT that has 10 hrs on it. I need to remove the fly wheel to move to the new egine. I am also trying to pull the gear that attaches to the drive shaft. How does that come off?

to get the flywheel off i put the old motor in a vice and just used a chain wrench to loosen it.

as for the gear behind the mag, you will need a harmonic balance puller (aka fly wheel puller) I got mine at advanced auto parts as a free loaner using their loan a tool program.

Correct.......

:agree: with revereamg. Sounds like a good Mcgyvering tool to me! That's what it's all about.

They sell a special tool (wrench) to take it off, but I like your idea!.....

The magneto flywheel, you can buy the typical gear puller, but you'll need to remove one of your bolts and take with you. Go to a hard ware store and buy 3 bolts, 3" or 4" long, size M6. They dont come with the typical puller (or at least mine didn't). Then, you'll have to remove your armature, break the large nut off, then you can put the puller on, tighten it up good and tight, then tap it with a hammer........it should pop right off.

The rotary valve, will have to be put on with the engine MAG piston set at TDC. There are specific measurements you have to mark in two areas to ensure you put that valve on correctly.

:agree: with them, use chain wrench or pipe wrench, but if cant get piston to lock for the pto to spin off, put 1/4 to 1/2in rope in cylinder, make sure its passed the exhaust port(learned from error), and that will lock ur up, to remove the PTO.
For the bolts Snipe mentioned, I used the 3 exhaust pipe bolts, threaded them into the holes(few turns)ofthe flywheel, and used the steering wheel puller...

to stop the old motor from spining when taking off the flywheel, i just jammed a crowbar into the hole behind the rotary valve, haha

:agree:Works like a charm! Used it last week to get my flywheel off

oops

I already removed the magnetic cup that bolts to the flywheel. How do I reset the timing when I put it back on?

First what year, model and engine do you have? This will help to give you pointers and specific instructions.

In order to stop engine rotation the safest method is to hydro-lock it with 2-stroke oil. Bring the cylinder up past the exhaust ports fill with oil and install a plug. Oil is not compressable and will hold the crank without damage to any parts. I've seen the results of people using wood, rags and rope:ack: :stupid:
This works for removing flywheels or PTO hubs.

You should never have removed the stator hub it comes off with the flywheel.

To set rotary valve timing bring the front cylinder to TDC. Put a plug in upside down and rotate engine until the plug floats between the up and down stroke. Place the rotary valve on the gear so that the front intake port is open. You will see a bolt hole just below the case seam. You want your valve to align between the case seam and the bolt hole. If it does not fall between the two then remove it and turn it over. Your engine manufacturer has installation pages that have some well detailed photos even though they also show using a degree wheel. I bought one and have used it once. Old school works for me everytime. page 7 shows good pic of alignment http://sbtontheweb.com/pdfs/sd580650720.pdf

787 motors have no adjustments to ignition timing. only goes on one way. then check it with a light. then, if it is off, it has to be re-timed thru the mpem.

..Hey jackhole,..i mean MobileWaterCraft, what you think he was try'n to remove...:cuss:

I F'd up

Like I said I'm new to all of this stuff...I bought a ski in good faith and the engine blew in the first hr. I am trying to swap it out for an SBT. I took it off and then saw the note in bold that said do not take off. You live and learn. Thanks for all of the help. It is greatly appreciated.

Was that really nessecary? So what we disagree. No need for rudeness.

I did not say ropes and such would not work I said I have seen people damage things. I still stand behind the safest method of removing flywheels and PTO is hydro-locking. Even a first timer CANNOT hurt anything with this method.
