Replacing Starter 98 Speedster

Been a crazy busy summer, and I haven't been at home at all.

Finally getting around to replacing the starboard side starter in the Speedster. I keep walking by the starter sitting on the swim deck, then looking the engine bay.. and then putting it off. Seems like a nightmare getting under there.

Any tips to make this easier?

I second the "take engine lid off" advise. In fact I haven't had mine bolted on for a while now with all the problems I'm working on. I've replaced both of my starters this way. So much easier to work from the swim platform in some cases.

I just replaced one of mine from the seat (no lid removal)

There are 3 bolts, 2 of which are painful. It can be done with LONG extensions if your arms are long. I'm 6'4" and I have reach enough, but it is not a comfortable job. You spend about 5 minutes on your head. The bottom bolt is the worst (I'm assuming the job is not that different from the 717 in mine that I just did)

Good Luck!

Yeah, I'm 6'5 with long arms. So I should be able to get to it. But I just keep putting it off. :(

Entirely different. The 787 is basically underneath the engine.

Just do it and get it over with! :)

It's amazing the amount of stuff I'm finding to do instead of doing this. Cleaning corners of my garage, checking off everything on my Honey-Do list one by one. Garage looks great, oil is changed in everything. You could eat off the floor.

Starter is still sitting there.

Ugh.

I know I'm going to get in upside down and not have the right wrenches and have to climb out. Lather, rinse repeat.

Man I'm lazy

You decide when you want to do it... when you want, or when the boat wants....:(

It's up to you :D

If you take the lid off
A tip I was given ....
After removing the stainless pins, get someone that can drill stainless to put a 3mm hole in each flattened end.
Then thread a key ring loop (stainless ) through each.
When you pop them back grease them up .
Now next time you want them out, use a tent peg extra yet through the ring and pull
Easy peasy [emoji106]
You still get a hernia lifting off the lid [emoji3]
