Any thoughts on which company has the best replacement engines? Looks like I may be needing one. In a quick search I found several companies that carry them. Any recommendations and why would you recommend them? Any first hand experience?

Few of the places I found..

Sold out, not sure if they still carry them.

No, and SBT is the way to go. I just had to order a 587 and they where great to deal with. If I ever have to order another one (hope not) it will be through SBT.

YES there is. The std motor, comes 1mm over, where the prem. motor is set back to std bore.

I have spoken with 2 differnet people at SBT. On their web site they talk about rebuilt and then they talk about remanufactured engines. One lady said they are the same thing, the other lady says that one is a complete tear down and rebuild. They both talked like there was no difference between the premium engine and the standard but I bet that is the difference. Since the one is bored.

Customer service....

If you speak with customer service, you are not getting the answers you need. They have a set of index cards, like FAQ's they use to answer your questiong.

Seadooya has made some very important points in the difference between these two motors.

In short, if you order the standard, with the one year warranty, you do not get the engine install gasket kit. YOu have to purchase it. By the time you get all you need to do the install on the standard engine, you might save $100 bucks.

Something else to think about. Yes, the Premium engines are Standard bore. No engine is bored over the OEM specs. I'd love to find one that was because they could be sued for false advertising.

When they get their core motors in, if they get one that has a busted out casing from a balance shaft that lost it's oiling, then cracked the casing. They will re-weld, do a NDT test on the quality of the weld, then re-assemble it to OEM specs and sell it as a standard engine.

The Premium engines are those that come in that are not damaged in any way. They are , like Seadooya says, resleeved to standard bore and re-assembled with new parts.

So, for the extra couple bucks, it's best that you do the Premium engine. I have used several of the standard engines, the oldest being about 5 years old now and it's still running like a champ. The compression I did on it this past off season was in the low 140's. So, just because it's standard, doesn't mean it's not going to suffice as a good engine exchange.

The most important thing in the SBT bashers... These are people who purchase the engine and blow them within the first month of buying them. The reason is "impatient". You can't buy these engines, install them and then take them out and run them like your old motor. You have got to pay strict attention to the extra added oil to help seat your rings and most importantly, vary the throttle through all ranges of the carbs transitions. From low speed screw to mid range with the operation of both the LS and HS and then, at WOT when you are using the HS jet only.

So, proper breakin is key to the success of buying a good engine from SBT and making it a lasting engine. Don't be in a rush and have plenty of patience during your break-in.........

TOTALLY...:agree:, Snipe said. I could not believe, my customer purchased the STD motor, and when i received it, it DIDNT have the gasket kit. Completely shocked with that. Considering after shipping..etc, around 800-ish buks, and no FREAK'N GASKETS...:ack: Atleast they could've thrown in an exhaust pipe and flywheel cover gaskets, maybe the carbs too.

Dont really want to wait the 4 weeks or so it may take Full Bore to turn my engine around. Does anyone have any experience or know anything about PWC Engine?

Their engines come with a 2 year warranty and all the gaskets as well. Sounds like an SBT premium mat be the way to go though.

Are there any specific questions I need to be asking when I am speaking to the different companies?

I put an SBT standard in one of my skis a couple of years back.. It runs great, I have had 0 problems with mine.. I live in Florida on the East Coast and I had the motor the next day.. They were gret to deal with.. Like the others have said just break it in correctly..

SBT is a southeast company so quick shipping is like a one stop relay race, full bore is up my way and they have a good reputation on the great lakes - the owner was very helpful to explain the fact that you get your same motor back unless something is really damaged, there may be others with some experience in your particular area - it looks like TN is halfway to each shop.

I live in SW Florida so SBT is a 2 hour drive. I rebuilt my 787 and needed a crank kit, a balance shaft, and a gasket kit. They have a very impressive show room and shop. When you order your parts a pretty blond brings them to your car in a golf cart, you then exchange your used parts. They even gave me free calenders and videos. Great service at a fair price.

OK, I have talked to SBT again. They say that if you order a standard or premium engine they would pull the engine from the same shelf. They are completely rebuilt exactly the same, using the same parts. They also say that both the standard AND premium engines are bored 1mm over.

I will probably call and order a premium engine from SBT after work today mostly because I dont want to wait to have mine rebuilt and they have them on the shelf. I may try calling PPG, I hear they build good engines, but does anyone know if they have engines already rebuilt or do they rebuild your own?

So after a few years - how did everything turn out with your engine rebuild?

You might also try SES engines seadooengineshop.com
Not as fast, but cheaper and good reports of the quality of rebuild.
They also claim to use better parts and processes than STB.

I sent my 657x engine out to SES to rebuild. To me it looks like Fullbore and SES rebuild their engines pretty close to the same with the same parts. I choses SES for the cost was a less for the same thing and they pay 1/2 the shipping if you blow the engine. To me that makes me feel they make a stronger engine or atleast stand behind it. I like that SES/Fullbore uses 4 hole rods, stronger rods, don't weld cranks, or mill heads to make the eninges work. Is there someone out there who ripped apart engines from SBT and SES/Fullbore to compare the differences?
