Customer service....
I have spoken with 2 differnet people at SBT. On their web site they talk about rebuilt and then they talk about remanufactured engines. One lady said they are the same thing, the other lady says that one is a complete tear down and rebuild. They both talked like there was no difference between the premium engine and the standard but I bet that is the difference. Since the one is bored.
If you speak with customer service, you are not getting the answers you need. They have a set of index cards, like FAQ's they use to answer your questiong.
Seadooya has made some very important points in the difference between these two motors.
In short, if you order the standard, with the one year warranty, you do not get the engine install gasket kit. YOu have to purchase it. By the time you get all you need to do the install on the standard engine, you might save $100 bucks.
Something else to think about. Yes, the Premium engines are Standard bore. No engine is bored over the OEM specs. I'd love to find one that was because they could be sued for false advertising.
When they get their core motors in, if they get one that has a busted out casing from a balance shaft that lost it's oiling, then cracked the casing. They will re-weld, do a NDT test on the quality of the weld, then re-assemble it to OEM specs and sell it as a standard engine.
The Premium engines are those that come in that are not damaged in any way. They are , like Seadooya says, resleeved to standard bore and re-assembled with new parts.
So, for the extra couple bucks, it's best that you do the Premium engine. I have used several of the standard engines, the oldest being about 5 years old now and it's still running like a champ. The compression I did on it this past off season was in the low 140's. So, just because it's standard, doesn't mean it's not going to suffice as a good engine exchange.
The most important thing in the SBT bashers... These are people who purchase the engine and blow them within the first month of buying them. The reason is "impatient". You can't buy these engines, install them and then take them out and run them like your old motor. You have got to pay strict attention to the extra added oil to help seat your rings and most importantly, vary the throttle through all ranges of the carbs transitions. From low speed screw to mid range with the operation of both the LS and HS and then, at WOT when you are using the HS jet only.
So, proper breakin is key to the success of buying a good engine from SBT and making it a lasting engine. Don't be in a rush and have plenty of patience during your break-in.........
