Possible Rev Limiter Problem?

Hi guys,
A few weeks ago a relative "gave" me a 97 GSX because it didn't run anymore and he didn't want to invest any money into it. Lucky me! I took it to my boat engine repair dude who has a 96 model and does minor work on it. Anyway, he said it needed a new battery and carb kit. All done, good to go, except when he test drove it he says it seems like the rev limiter is kicking in when at WOT and coming out of the hole. He is not deep into Seadoo repairs and I think he has gone about as far as he is comfortable with. I now have a halfway decent 97 Seadoo for an investment of just under $500. Of course I want it to perform as good as I can get. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing the limiter to kick in? He said it feels like it is not getting a good bite in the water. I drove unit before it went down last year and it was pulling three kids on a tube with no probs. I would appreciate any comments.

I'll give 'em a look. I asked my father in law if he had ever cleaned them. His response, "Boy, all I did was put gas and oil in it for the last five years". Now I'm kinda scared to even pull the seat off. He was probably using Quaker State at that!

wear ring...

you got throttle response, it revs out, BUT no bite from impellor?....Need new wear ring, and possible impellor reconditioned/replaced.

:agree: Yes, you have a damaged impeller and/or wear ring allowing the engine to rev too high.

Does anyone have a link that shows a good picture of the wear ring? When I picked the unit up last night my mechanic showed me a piece of what looked like a plastic ring with what looked like screw holes around the edges. Also, if you reach in and try to rotate the impeller from the rear shouldn't it spin freely?

Thanks from this newbie for all of the replies!
